Gzb shuts all schools for kanwar yatra till July 23
The order, issued by the basic education department after directions from the district magistrate, said the decision to close schools was taken "keeping in mind, the movement and safety of children" at a time when a large number of devotees will be crossing the district to reach Haridwar.
The closure, it said, applies to all primary, upper primary, secondary, CBSE, ICSE, technical, higher education, madrasa, and Sanskrit board institutions, across all classes.

On Wednesday, some private schools announced that they will resort to conducting online classes for a week.
"We have already prepared an online schedule for classes and it will be rolled out immediately. Classes must not be hampered for such causes. Schools already get few working days throughout the year because of pollution break, summer break, winter break and other reasons," said Seema Jerath, principal at DLF Public School in Ghaziabad.

Others raised concerns about completing the course.
"Why is this a priority at this hour? Compromising academics and closure of schools for a week only for religious rallies is not acceptable. Online classes are feasible for schools, where students come from well-off families. However, there are students who belong to EWS categories, and govt schools too. How can they conduct online classes," asked a principal of a private school in the city.
Parents, too, criticised the move."There are so many working parents. If kids are left at home, it is a problem for them too. Moreover, students — especially those approaching board exams — will be most affected by such decisions. Online classes are not a solution for completing academic curriculum smoothly," said Vivek Tyagi, president of Ghaziabad Parents Association.
The kanwar yatra will reach a peak on July 23, which will be observed as Sawan's Shivratri, and is expected to draw large crowds.
Other than Ghaziabad, similar week-long school closures have been ordered in Meerut and Muzaffarnagar districts of UP. In Bareilly, schools remain closed on all four Mondays, and in Badaun, primary school classes are suspended every Saturday and Monday of the month of Sawan.

Muharram mourning resonates in some Hindu followers too
Lucknow: Number of public processions has reduced as Muharram progresses, compared to the first 10 days of this first month of the Islamic calendar. Azadari inside homes, however, continues. Interestingly, alongside Shia Muslims, numerous non-Muslims observe Azadari in their homes from the first day of Muharram to the 8th of Rabi-ul-Awwal, which is third month of the Islamic calendar. Azadari refers to the mourning rituals and commemoration observed by the Shia, particularly during Muharram, to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein and his 70 companions in the Battle of Karbala. Among those who deeply connect with this tradition is resident of Baba ka Purwa Khadra, Sitapur road, Sooraj Gupta (36), who represents second generation of a family that follows the Azadari ritual. Facing medical challenges, his mother, late Nisha Gupta, had prayed to Hazrat Imam Hussain for a child. Her prayers were answered when Sooraj was born on May 15, 1989. Since then, the family has maintained the tradition of keeping a taziya at home and Sooraj continues the tradition devotedly. Apart from performing matam, Sooraj also sets up a sabeel (free refreshment stall) near Kazmain Imambara during Muharram. Speaking to TOI, he said, "Even today, if I need anything, I seek it from Hazrat Maula Abbas." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Better hearing starts here Amplifon Book Now Undo His wife joins him in Azadari and he hopes to pass on the tradition to his son. Ankit's grandfather founded Anjuman named Hind-Abbasiya, keeping alive the message of Karbala in their family. Ankit said, "I teach Hazrat Imam Hussain's invaluable message to the next generation to understand true meaning of relations." Ankit's father Mahesh Bharti attempted to travel abroad for work but his visa applications were always rejected. Iraq, however, granted him visa, despite its ongoing war with Iran, so he went to Iraq and worked at Babylon Hotel. His visits to Karbala and Roza of Hazrat Imam Hussain deepened the family's bond with the legacy. Another azadar Rajesh Bhangra, resident of Alambagh, said he had been participating in Azadari for 50 years and believed his wishes were fulfilled through this devotion.

Gorakhpur ranks 4th nationally in Swacch Surveskshan
1 2 Gorakhpur: Gorakhpur has clinched the top spot in Uttar Pradesh under the 3–10 lakh population category in the Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings, while securing an impressive 4th position nationally among cities with a population between 1–10 lakh. The city also bagged the prestigious 5-Star Garbage Free City (GFC) certification and the coveted Water+ status, alongside securing 3rd place in the Safaimitra Surakshit Shehar Challenge, Gorakhpur municipal corporation (GMC) official informed. This feat marks a significant turnaround for Gorakhpur, which ranked 74th nationally in 2023. According to officials, the success is attributed to a focused strategy involving 100% door-to-door waste collection, scientific disposal of legacy waste, establishment of RRR (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) centres, and technological innovations like QR-based monitoring. Over 2.24 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste were scientifically cleared from the Ekla Bandha site, which was later rejuvenated with over 1.5 lakh miyawaki trees across 40 acres. Efforts such as decentralised wastewater treatment at Takiya Ghat Nala using nature-based solutions, and development of an integrated waste management facility at Suthani, have further strengthened the city's waste management framework. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Mayor Manglesh Kumar Srivastava described the achievement as a "collective victory of citizens, sanitation workers and the administrative machinery." CMFRI to carry out marine fishing village validation
Mangaluru: As a preparatory step for the Fifth Marine Fisheries Census (MFC-2025), the department of fisheries (DoF), ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying, govt of India, launched a nationwide validation and georeferencing of marine fishing villages through ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). The Mangalore Regional Centre of ICAR-CMFRI will carry out the process for the coastal districts of Karnataka. This census is undertaken under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), with CMFRI serving as the nodal agency for implementation across India. The exercise aims to establish an accurate and updated frame of marine fishing villages across India's coastline and island territories, laying the foundation for household-level enumeration scheduled later in the year. Over the next two weeks, 108 officials from CMFRI and the Fishery Survey of India (FSI) will visit every marine fishing village to verify its status, delineate boundaries, and compile an updated village frame. This exercise will be conducted using VyASNAV (Village-Jetty Appraisal Navigator), a custom-built mobile application developed by CMFRI to enable real-time, geo-referenced data collection. This foundational activity precedes the comprehensive household enumeration scheduled for Nov–Dec 2025, which will cover approximately 1.2 million fisher households across 3,500 villages in 13 coastal states and UTs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "An accurate and updated frame of marine fishing villages is essential to ensure the success of the household-level enumeration," said Neetu Kumari Prasad, joint secretary, department of fisheries. In collaboration with state fisheries departments and local administrative bodies, census teams will assess each village's dependence on marine fishing and allied activities, estimate the number of marine fisher households, and geotag village boundaries. The data will feed into a GIS-enabled MFC dashboard, supported by a robust online backup system and a two-tier supervision framework at district and state levels to ensure data integrity. "The census will generate granular data on socio-economic conditions, livelihood dependencies, and infrastructure gaps, enabling the govt to design targeted interventions for sustainable development of marine fishing communities," added Neetu Kumari Prasad. Grinson George, director of CMFRI, noted that the teams will also identify and shortlist local community members to be trained as enumerators for the household phase.
