Incredible £1.3bn theme park built to rival Disneyland abandoned and left to rot
Once heralded as France's answer to Disneyland Paris, designed to bring French literature to life, Mirapolis now stands as a ghostly and desolate landmark.
Initially celebrated as "France's first large amusement park," the site is now eerily deserted. Strategically located less than an hour from Disneyland Paris, Mirapolis opened its doors in 1987 with high hopes of immersing visitors in the wonders of French literary classics.
However, the lofty dreams were short-lived, as within a mere four years, this bold venture turned into one of France's most notorious flops.
Created by architect Anne Fourcade, Mirapolis was intended as a cultural foil to Disneyland, marrying historical literature with thrill-seeking. Backed financially by Saudi businessman Ghaith Pharaon, the whopping construction cost was $600 million – a figure that would translate to around £1.3 billion today considering inflation, the Express reports.
Even Jacques Chirac, then Prime Minister of France, graced the park's opening and kicked off the excitement surrounding its 29 attractions. According to AD magazine, the new amusement park had high hopes of welcoming as many as 600,000 tourists a year.
Yet despite the buzz, problems loomed from day one - relentless rainfall marred its debut season, leading to frequent closures of its open-air rides.
Mirapolis did find a silver lining in its theatre, which hosted a popular children's musical with grand puppetry, but insufficient foot traffic persisted. Seemingly lacklustre market research and overzealous financial predictions meant that the park was destined for closure, sealing its fate in 1991 without ever turning a profit.
It is said to have been sensationally labelled one of the biggest financial failures in France.
By 1993, the demolition process had started, with most of its structures being removed or sold off. The park's iconic centrepiece, a towering statue of Gargantua from French folklore, stood firm against dismantling until 1995, when its head was finally destroyed with dynamite.
Nowadays, all that's left of Mirapolis is some entrance fences, pathways leading to former attractions and a park featuring a small lake. Over time, various plans to breathe new life into the site have been proposed and then abandoned.
Many residents of France still remember the amusement park today, with various comments emerging on X, formerly Twitter, over the years. One former visitor wrote: "This is the France we love", while a second added: "With Gargantua as the figurehead. I went there once with my school. It was pretty awesome. And the ruins remained for years."
A third noted: "I remember this park offering wins on TV shows like The Price Is Right and others. It was a dream come true..." Another penned: "Apparently the characters scared children and that's understandable."
In response, someone added: "It was awesome, I went mainly for the 'gravitron.' I don't remember being scared of the characters, but they probably terrified others."

Disneyland Paris has unveiled new plans for a massive expansion to the beloved park that will be themed to a beloved franchise. Permits for a new area and ride dedicated to The Lion King have reportedly been approved this week. And the news has left thrilled Disney enthusiasts eagerly awaiting for the construction to start. Digital renderings and plans for the upcoming Lion King expansion at Disneyland Paris, which has been given the name Project Sun, have been shared on several Disney blogs. Rendered images show the new land, which includes an attraction, shop, and food vendors. As per DLP Works - which touts itself the 'premier source of Disneyland Paris' - construction permits for were submitted on April 14, and were approved by the authorities on August 14, 2025. According to blueprints shared by the site, the Parisian park's upcoming Lion King-themed land will occupy most of the left side of Adventure Bay, measuring roughly 100,000-square-feet in total. It's the first time any Disney park in the world has opened an area dedicated to the much-loved Disney film. As per Disneyland Paris News, the new ride will center around the 'majestic Pride Rock,' a pivotal part of the 1994 animated classic. The ride will serve as the 'gateway' to an 'adventure-filled water attraction.' '[The ride will] plunge guests beneath the rock to follow Simba on his journey from cub to king, in a retelling of the story from the classic animated feature film,' the blog wrote. The Disney experts continued: 'When visiting this first-ever themed area, guests will be immersed in the world of The Lion King thanks to Disney character greetings, themed dining, and shopping opportunities, which promises an unforgettable experience for guests of all ages.' The Daily Mail previously reported that the all-new attraction will blend a spectacular water experience with state-of-the-art Audio-Animatronics technology, making guests feel like they're in the heart of the Pride Lands, where Simba will await them for an unforgettable adventure complete with iconic songs from the 1994 masterpiece. Guests can then move to the caves beneath the 121-foot-high Pride Rock, taking them through iconic scenes from the beloved animated movie, navigating a path with three exciting slopes, including an impressive 52-foot-high descent. 'We are looking forward to launching the construction of this new immersive world inspired by The Lion King and its major attraction, which will mark another milestone for Disney Adventure World,' Michel Den Dulk, Vice President and Portfolio Executive Creative Director at Walt Disney Imagineering, previously said. 'The main attraction will showcase the key features of Disney experiences: loveable characters, an unforgettable soundtrack, immersive décor and effects, and exciting thrills thoughtfully delivered throughout the adventure.' Natacha Rafalski, President of Disneyland Paris, added: 'All of the Imagineers who work on this project have their hearts set on paying a vibrant homage to this timeless masterpiece by creating unforgettable memories for all our guests. 'At the end of its expansion journey – which includes the opening of Adventure Way, Adventure Bay, and World of Frozen in 2026, and later an immersive world themed to The Lion King – we'll have reimagined more than 90 percent of the park's offerings since its debut in 2002, and roughly doubled its footprint to truly become a can't-miss experience!' In addition to Lion King, Disneyland Paris is also opening another immersive world next year - The World of Frozen, which will transform guests to the Kingdom of Arendelle and get the chance to meet Anna, Elsa, and Olaf. Disney recently unveiled images showing the finishing touches being made to the area's North Mountain, rising 118-feet above the ground.

To be like, 'Oh, well, if they do it, I don't want it to happen. I'll put Clorox in my children's cereal myself.' 'You know, it's like, come on, be reasonable here. There's certain things that would be a good thing to have. I want them all to be successful,' Pratt said. Maher agreed that Kennedy was a great guy, saying he loves him but has some advice for his work in Washington. 'I love him. I don't agree with everything, but I agree with, like, the overall view that what makes us sick is the toxicity,' Maher said. 'When he was here, I said my advice to you is like you need to marry your former life more with what you're doing now. Your former life, you were very admired as an environmental lawyer.' Despite the outsized caricature of Kennedy as a conspiracy theorist, Maher flatly denies he's out of the ordinary. 'And he's not crazy. I mean the people trying to – he's also got, like I said to him when he was here, 'I don't agree with everything you said, and I don't think your father would either, but your father would be so proud that you stuck to your guns like more than anybody,' he told the actor. 'I mean this guy, when this guy believes something you cannot move him off of it with your bribes. That's for better and worse,' Maher added. The comments were widely slammed as vapid and noncommittal, especially as they came just days after his father-in-law Arnold Schwarzenegger had forcefully endorsed Harris, warning that another Trump term would mean 'four more years of [expletive] with no results.' Pratt's attempts to present himself as above the political fray have often backfired. In 2019, he was called out by Elliot Page for attending a church with alleged anti-LGBTQ ties.
