'Can't say thank you enough,' Beauval mayor says as international firefighters leave Sask.
Saskatchewan's fight against wildfires in the north drew help from thousands of kilometres away, which one local leader says helped save his community. Firefighters from Australia and Mexico spent the past several weeks working alongside Saskatchewan crews near Beauval, about 340 kilometres north of Saskatoon. They're now heading home, along with Canadian military firefighters, after the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency confirmed most of the fires are now contained. Australia's Lance Keesing, a deputy captain with the New South Wales Rural Fire Service, was one of the 39 firefighters assigned to Beauval. He says after Australia's National Resource Sharing Centre put out a call for help, volunteering to fight fires in Canada was a no-brainer. "[They] put a request for expressions of interest for people to come to Canada as an arduous firefighter," Keesing said. "I submitted my application and got on the list." Keesing's crew began working on July 14, and kept going for 14 days straight, working 12-hour shifts. After a three-day break, the crew worked another 15 days straight, before heading back home to Australia on Aug. 15. While wildfires are in some respects the same everywhere, the conditions and the terrain in Saskatchewan were different from back home, he said. "The most important one probably is the muskeg that you have here that we don't normally see in New South Wales," a southeastern Australian state, Keesing said. "We've had to change our tactics a little bit and force the water underground to try to stop the fires." While he didn't see massive fire walls, the work was still gruelling, he said. "We didn't see too much active fire front ourselves, but we were doing a lot of cleanup and protection around the town of Beauval," Keesing said. He also learned some new techniques that he might use in Australia as that country enters their wildfire season in the fall, he said. Mexican firefighters come to help Also fighting alongside the local crews were firefighters from Mexico. Teresa Morquecho, a representative with Mexico's firefighting agency, says 143 firefighters were sent to Saskatchewan, in what was the country's first deployment to the province. "We worked alongside Australian, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec crews, all with the same goal and objective," she said. She also noted the differences in fighting fires in Saskatchewan compared to her home country. "Canada has a different ecosystem," Morquecho said. "Saskatchewan's forests are dense, and in Mexico, we have jungles." The most rewarding part of her experience was seeing families return home after evacuations, said Morquecho. "I feel joyful, because I got to see families go back to their homes." 'Saved our community': mayor Beauval Mayor Rick Laliberte says the international support made the difference between saving his community and losing it. "We can't say thank you enough for the efforts that they made and putting their lives in danger in front of the fire," Laliberte said. "It saved our community." The village is now in "recovery mode," Laliberte says. That includes assessing the damage and ensuring the area is safe as people return to the community. For Keesing, the trip is an indication of the relationship between Australia and Canada, which have a shared history — including when Canadian firefighters helped out with fires in Australia in the past. "I felt it was an honour and a privilege to come over here and help out," he said. "More than happy to do it again."
