WWE SmackDown results, highlights (April 18): Cody Rhodes obliterates John Cena before WrestleMania 41
There's not much left to settle with the "Grand Daddy of Them All" going down tomorrow, and Friday's show reflected that. Fun teases popped up in certain instances, but not much else. Let's break it down and move on to enjoy the stacked weekend, folks.
The conclusion of the Road to WrestleMania was essentially an extension of what we've already seen between Rhodes and Cena. They spoke separately, as Cena targeted the crowd, while Rhodes absolutely roasted his legendary counterpart. I mean, the WWE Undisputed Champion whipped out a Starrcade '97 Sting reference. Rhodes just scorched Cena, but not before we finally got at least some (slightly) deeper mentions of The Rock from Cena.
Just like the last time they met in the ring, Rhodes planted Cena with a Cross Rhodes. (This time countering an Attitude Adjustment.) The somewhat minimal, cookie-cutter build to their match has been entertaining in the most simplistic way. However, I wish it had more substance, especially given how crucial that element was. At this point, it will have felt like nothing more than a cash-grab spectacle main event choice if Cena doesn't win. There has to be more to this, right?

It's happening, you guys. Iyo Sky is hanging onto that Women's World Championship on Sunday, and there's no way Naomi doesn't get involved.
To start the final pre-WrestleMania interaction between Sky, Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair, I was pleasantly surprised to see WWE give Ripley the realization that she just randomly got distracted by Belair during her title loss to Sky. Once the champion arrived, Belair cut her off to a bunch of boos as Sky never got to speak a word. The way she's been such an afterthought has been intentional and crafted sneakily well.
However, the real juice in this segment was Naomi's arrival to ask Belair why she's been ignoring her calls and interactions. She's the crazy, obsessed friend who demands her answer with hatred for the new friend.
NO EXCUSES! @RheaRipley_WWE plans on taking back the Women's World Championship this Sunday at #WrestleMania! 😤#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/iPmGBlSuap

If the tease wasn't blatant enough, Jade Cargill perfectly cut off Naomi before she could say what she'll do after finishing what she started with the Cargill attack. That's because it will be the big attack on Belair to set up the continuation of this lengthy story, and rightfully so. I'm telling you guys, I will be wildly disappointed if this doesn't go where it should — win or lose for Naomi against Cargill.
This has gone off the rails! 😱@Iyo_SkyWWE had to remind EVERYONE who the Women's World Champion is 👊#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/E9tkPbjKmI

To springboard off of intertwining storylines, a Battle Royal is essentially just throwing things together. That's what we got with the return of the Andre The Giant memorial Battle Royal — it just wasn't at WrestleMania.
Nonetheless, it was an awesome match. The final three were Rey Fenix, Andrade and Carmelo Hayes. That's a dream triple-threat match, and hopefully it comes to fruition at some point somehow. Ultimately, El Grande Americano emerged out of nowhere to cost Fenix, allowing for another Hayes-Andrade encounter's brilliance. Those two are just made for each other, and reminded the world of that. Karrion Kross also continued his brilliance with the time he had in the match, as did Ludwig Kaiser and Pete Dunne with a fun sequence.

A Battle Royal is always an easy way to get in some fun, cool moments for those who deserve more screentime, and this was no exception.
The handling of the WWE Tag Team title scene has become embarrassing. If the titles being left off WrestleMania 41 weren't enough, the great matchup of the champion Street Profits vs. Motor City Machine Guns ended via DQ when DIY interfered. Talk about a pitiful joke of a booking decision.
This is even worse if my predicted Big E return doesn't happen in the World Tag Team match with The New Day challenging the War Raiders.

The end game between all three of the "WWE SmackDown" teams appears to be (and hopefully is) the triple-threat tag team title TLC match that was announced for next Friday's show. That match works for me, but getting to that destination has not been good. And how it gets left off 'Mania is beyond me. The Las Vegas crowd even booed when Nick Aldis announced it.
1. Seth Rollins opened "WWE SmackDown" and just started to cook on the microphone. This was one of the best standalone promos from the whole storyline between Rollins, CM Punk and Roman Reigns. Rollins took to the center of the ring and mocked Punk's classic pipebomb, sitting and taking off the mic sleeve. There were more AEW mentions and even a Dean Ambrose name drop (R.I.P.). As fun as the interactions are between all three, this was excellent for what it was.
Okay, @wwerollins.. we see you channeling your inner @CMPunk 👀#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/fNPWYkKR3L

— WWE (@WWE) April 19, 2025
2. During the Andre The Giant Battle Royal, Wade Barrett dropped a brilliant line about Ludwig Kaiser DM'ing him throughout the week.
3. Unfortunately, the Nick Aldis steam for a Randy Orton match at WrestleMania 41 has appeared to completely cool off. Instead, Orton promised to be at the show of shows in yet another absolutely epic, passionate promo to issue an open challenge.
The Rusev or Malakai Black ideas are fun, but are they really big enough to replicate the Rhodes-Rollins situation of years' past? Also, Orton shouldn't lose his match, which makes Aldis even more perfect. Neither Rusev nor Black should lose upon a return.

4. Anyone who watched Fenix in AEW knows he's a blast of a time in a tag team or trios match, and that was the case when he and the LWO (Dragon Lee and Rey Mysterio) defeated American Made.

5. Despite the down I'm about to give out, WWE made a phenomenal Machine Head hyped video for Punk vs. Rollins vs. Reigns. Hell yeah.

1. I've started to notice that with these three-hour "WWE SmackDowns," WWE uses a lot of reflection or preview videos to fill time that could be used to give screentime. That's what the whole point of this extra time should be, and I can't tell you how much time gets lost on these video packages.
2. Zelina Vega beat United States Champion Chelsea Green clean with a super Code Red. Honestly, WWE, get rid of the belt now if this is how it's going to be treated. This has been atrocious.

3. Mysterio looks to have a possible injury the night before his WrestleMania match against El Grande Americano. A severe injury would be a huge bummer for the legend. We wish him all the best, no matter the details.

4. I was enjoying the hell out of LA Knight vs. Solo Sikoa — then Jacob Fatu got Sikoa DQ'd by attacking Knight. This immediately turned it into a tag team match when Braun Strowman made the save, but this was still dumb, and Strowman lost the conclusion of his Fatu rivalry. (At least we thought.) Just make the tag team match from the beginning, or give us a clean match. The interference endings are so out of control lately.

👑 All that's left is the big show, thankfully. These recent weeks have felt like they've been holding off or dragging out until we could reach that final destination. I give this "WWE SmackDown" a Crown score of: 5.5/10 👑

WWE's weekly shows have a DQ problem — and the data shows it's only getting worse
Are there too many disqualification finishes in WWE? Readers of our weekly 'Raw' and 'SmackDown' round-ups will know that Uncrowned's Drake Riggs certainly thinks so. In fact, he's become so sick of the apparently repetitive finishes that he's occasionally resorted to compiling his own "DQ of the Week" award to name-and-shame the worst offenders. Of course, anyone who's watched WWE since before the Netflix era knows that DQ finishes are nothing new. Wrestlers have been getting themselves penalized for breaking the rules for longer than referees have been wearing striped shirts. But there's definitely a sense online that a certain type of DQ/interference finish has become more common in recent months — particularly when a certain faction is around. We get that Seth Rollins and his outriders — now known as 'The Vision' — are supposed to be the most dominant grouping in the WWE, with a duo of enforcers who like dishing out beatings for their own sake. But do they have to make that point repeatedly by constantly ambushing their opponents during each other's matches? Particularly when the same thing happens again the very next week… Indeed as I watched the same dance unfold on this week's 'Raw' during the Jey Uso vs. Bron Breakker match, it got me thinking: What does the data say about this supposed plague of DQs? According to WWE's official results data, we've had 322 matches thus far across the two weekly shows this year, of which 32 have finished in a DQ (about 10%). That's almost double the rate of 2024 (when we saw 29 DQs in 512 matches — or 5.7%) and quite significantly more than two years ago (when we had 20 DQs in 534 matches — just 3.7%). Interestingly, though, the jump isn't anywhere near as big when you roll the clock back into the depths of the latter Vince McMahon era. Back in 2021, the DQ rate on the weekly shows was 8% — the same as in 2016 and 2019. It isn't quite the 1-in-10 that we're seeing this year, of course, but it's not the sort of difference that should really be noticeable unless you're making a point of keeping score. At this point, it's worth addressing some other pertinent factors. If we're going on the overall viewing experience, we should take account of the fact that the overall number of matches on the weekly shows has dropped during the Triple H/TKO era. The effect is particularly pronounced on "Raw," where we've reached an average of just 4.4 matches per week, compared to 5.7 last year and 7.1 in 2021, partly to create space for more commercial content. The numbers on 'SmackDown' are less dramatic, due to the fact that most of the shows were three-hour programs this year rather than two, which meant more matches to fill time. That Triple H prefers slimmer match cards is hardly news by this point. But when you factor in the combination of fewer matches and an increase in DQ finishes, you can see why some viewers are growing increasingly frustrated at the number of matches that don't end with a clear winner. If it's inconclusive finishes that are the problem, it's also worth factoring in the number of matches that are declared a 'no contest' in WWE's official results lists. While these aren't technically counted as DQs, in many cases they might as well be — particularly when they involve multiple run-ins and interferences. If you include those matches too, then the number of non-finishes on 'Raw' and 'SmackDown' rises to an immense 14%. If we're just looking at August, the number is even higher with 22% of all matches ending in either a disqualification or a chaotic run-in situation. That's just short of one in four matches. Of course, not every DQ is alike and some can be entertaining in their own right. I doubt many fans complained about John Cena tossing CM Punk through a table in order to set up a Pipe Bomb tribute, for example. But a big problem flagged up in our weekly reviews isn't just the volume of DQs, but the fact that so many seem to be similar. Just look at the last few weeks of "Raw," where we saw three consecutive main events (July 28, August 4 and August 11) called off due to some form of interference involving 'The Vision' and their opponents. When you have that many repetitive finishes, it makes you feel like these 'Raw' main events are really just treading water. In fairness, these kinds of DQ clusters aren't new either. Both iterations of The Bloodline have also been responsible for their fair share of DQs over the past few years, as have The Judgment Day. It isn't always factions, either: Back in 2022, there was a string of DQ finishes involving Austin Theory, then being pushed as the next great heel by Vince McMahon. But then there are the DQs that just reek of indecision, due to WWE's reluctance to have their big names suffer a defeat. The fact that Iyo Sky vs. Stephanie Vaquer has ended in a non-finish on two separate occasions this year, for example — would it be really so bad just to have one of them take the loss, rather than opting for another interference finish? Of course, booking trends can change and it may be that we're looking at very different numbers in a year's time. Yet as things stand, we can confirm that the DQ problem is indeed very real. Almost one in four 'Raw' matches ending in a dusty finish over the past several weeks — surely we deserve better than that?

Ilona Maher in WWE? USA star weighs next move after Rugby World Cup
MANCHESTER, England — U.S. rugby player Ilona Maher said she is contemplating an offer to participate in WWE wrestling as a stepping stone to Hollywood after the Women's Rugby World Cup that kicks off on Friday in England. "I've been approached before by the WWE," she told the BBC, joking that her ring name would be 'Maher-vellous'. "I should think about it, there is great money in it." Maher is the world's most followed rugby player with nearly nine million followers across Instagram and TikTok. She was also a contestant on "Dancing with the Stars", posed for Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue and was named best breakthrough athlete at this year's ESPYS, ESPN's annual award show. "I would love to get into the acting space and the scripted space. I think a Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson, John Cena progression - I would love to do that," Maher said. "It would be exciting to see my body type on the screen. I'll start off small - probably like a hot assassin or something, let's not get too crazy. I'm not going to be in a rom-com just yet. "We'll see. The world is open, but I do see myself coming back to rugby." The United States play favorite England to open the World Cup on Friday at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.
