WWE SmackDown results, highlights (April 18): Cody Rhodes obliterates John Cena before WrestleMania 41
It felt weird to see a WWE event in Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena rather than the typical UFC PPV event, but the venue was a logical final stop on the Road to WrestleMania and "WWE SmackDown."
There's not much left to settle with the "Grand Daddy of Them All" going down tomorrow, and Friday's show reflected that. Fun teases popped up in certain instances, but not much else. Let's break it down and move on to enjoy the stacked weekend, folks.
The conclusion of the Road to WrestleMania was essentially an extension of what we've already seen between Rhodes and Cena. They spoke separately, as Cena targeted the crowd, while Rhodes absolutely roasted his legendary counterpart. I mean, the WWE Undisputed Champion whipped out a Starrcade '97 Sting reference. Rhodes just scorched Cena, but not before we finally got at least some (slightly) deeper mentions of The Rock from Cena.
Just like the last time they met in the ring, Rhodes planted Cena with a Cross Rhodes. (This time countering an Attitude Adjustment.) The somewhat minimal, cookie-cutter build to their match has been entertaining in the most simplistic way. However, I wish it had more substance, especially given how crucial that element was. At this point, it will have felt like nothing more than a cash-grab spectacle main event choice if Cena doesn't win. There has to be more to this, right?

It's happening, you guys. Iyo Sky is hanging onto that Women's World Championship on Sunday, and there's no way Naomi doesn't get involved.
To start the final pre-WrestleMania interaction between Sky, Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair, I was pleasantly surprised to see WWE give Ripley the realization that she just randomly got distracted by Belair during her title loss to Sky. Once the champion arrived, Belair cut her off to a bunch of boos as Sky never got to speak a word. The way she's been such an afterthought has been intentional and crafted sneakily well.
However, the real juice in this segment was Naomi's arrival to ask Belair why she's been ignoring her calls and interactions. She's the crazy, obsessed friend who demands her answer with hatred for the new friend.
NO EXCUSES! @RheaRipley_WWE plans on taking back the Women's World Championship this Sunday at #WrestleMania! 😤#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/iPmGBlSuap

Come on, @BiancaBelairWWE!Naomi just wants to talk...#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/f6btAh2vtw
— WWE (@WWE) April 19, 2025
If the tease wasn't blatant enough, Jade Cargill perfectly cut off Naomi before she could say what she'll do after finishing what she started with the Cargill attack. That's because it will be the big attack on Belair to set up the continuation of this lengthy story, and rightfully so. I'm telling you guys, I will be wildly disappointed if this doesn't go where it should — win or lose for Naomi against Cargill.
This has gone off the rails! 😱@Iyo_SkyWWE had to remind EVERYONE who the Women's World Champion is 👊#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/E9tkPbjKmI

To springboard off of intertwining storylines, a Battle Royal is essentially just throwing things together. That's what we got with the return of the Andre The Giant memorial Battle Royal — it just wasn't at WrestleMania.
Nonetheless, it was an awesome match. The final three were Rey Fenix, Andrade and Carmelo Hayes. That's a dream triple-threat match, and hopefully it comes to fruition at some point somehow. Ultimately, El Grande Americano emerged out of nowhere to cost Fenix, allowing for another Hayes-Andrade encounter's brilliance. Those two are just made for each other, and reminded the world of that. Karrion Kross also continued his brilliance with the time he had in the match, as did Ludwig Kaiser and Pete Dunne with a fun sequence.

A Battle Royal is always an easy way to get in some fun, cool moments for those who deserve more screentime, and this was no exception.
The handling of the WWE Tag Team title scene has become embarrassing. If the titles being left off WrestleMania 41 weren't enough, the great matchup of the champion Street Profits vs. Motor City Machine Guns ended via DQ when DIY interfered. Talk about a pitiful joke of a booking decision.
This is even worse if my predicted Big E return doesn't happen in the World Tag Team match with The New Day challenging the War Raiders.
DIY VS MCMG VS SP Book the match at mania pls 🙏🏻#smackdown pic.twitter.com/d4Swp2D02Y

The end game between all three of the "WWE SmackDown" teams appears to be (and hopefully is) the triple-threat tag team title TLC match that was announced for next Friday's show. That match works for me, but getting to that destination has not been good. And how it gets left off 'Mania is beyond me. The Las Vegas crowd even booed when Nick Aldis announced it.
1. Seth Rollins opened "WWE SmackDown" and just started to cook on the microphone. This was one of the best standalone promos from the whole storyline between Rollins, CM Punk and Roman Reigns. Rollins took to the center of the ring and mocked Punk's classic pipebomb, sitting and taking off the mic sleeve. There were more AEW mentions and even a Dean Ambrose name drop (R.I.P.). As fun as the interactions are between all three, this was excellent for what it was.
Okay, @wwerollins.. we see you channeling your inner @CMPunk 👀#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/fNPWYkKR3L

.@wwerollins is putting it all on the line TOMORROW at #WrestleMania!!#SmackDown pic.twitter.com/pexGSMtqpi
— WWE (@WWE) April 19, 2025
2. During the Andre The Giant Battle Royal, Wade Barrett dropped a brilliant line about Ludwig Kaiser DM'ing him throughout the week.
3. Unfortunately, the Nick Aldis steam for a Randy Orton match at WrestleMania 41 has appeared to completely cool off. Instead, Orton promised to be at the show of shows in yet another absolutely epic, passionate promo to issue an open challenge.
The Rusev or Malakai Black ideas are fun, but are they really big enough to replicate the Rhodes-Rollins situation of years' past? Also, Orton shouldn't lose his match, which makes Aldis even more perfect. Neither Rusev nor Black should lose upon a return.

4. Anyone who watched Fenix in AEW knows he's a blast of a time in a tag team or trios match, and that was the case when he and the LWO (Dragon Lee and Rey Mysterio) defeated American Made.

5. Despite the down I'm about to give out, WWE made a phenomenal Machine Head hyped video for Punk vs. Rollins vs. Reigns. Hell yeah.

1. I've started to notice that with these three-hour "WWE SmackDowns," WWE uses a lot of reflection or preview videos to fill time that could be used to give screentime. That's what the whole point of this extra time should be, and I can't tell you how much time gets lost on these video packages.
2. Zelina Vega beat United States Champion Chelsea Green clean with a super Code Red. Honestly, WWE, get rid of the belt now if this is how it's going to be treated. This has been atrocious.

3. Mysterio looks to have a possible injury the night before his WrestleMania match against El Grande Americano. A severe injury would be a huge bummer for the legend. We wish him all the best, no matter the details.
Bummer. It looks like Rey Mysterio got hurt in the match.Doctors had to help him out.Credit to @siradam03_ pic.twitter.com/ItENXzwDA7

4. I was enjoying the hell out of LA Knight vs. Solo Sikoa — then Jacob Fatu got Sikoa DQ'd by attacking Knight. This immediately turned it into a tag team match when Braun Strowman made the save, but this was still dumb, and Strowman lost the conclusion of his Fatu rivalry. (At least we thought.) Just make the tag team match from the beginning, or give us a clean match. The interference endings are so out of control lately.

— Planeta Wrestling (@Planeta_Wrest) April 19, 2025
👑 All that's left is the big show, thankfully. These recent weeks have felt like they've been holding off or dragging out until we could reach that final destination. I give this "WWE SmackDown" a Crown score of: 5.5/10 👑

WrestleMania 42 to take place in Las Vegas once again
WWE announced on Wednesday that WrestleMania 42 will be held in Las Vegas for the second straight year after it was previously revealed that New Orleans would be the host site. Reports about the premiere event of the WWE season leaving New Orleans surfaced a few weeks back. As speculation ran rampant on social media, WWE announced during its Money in the Bank premium live event that WrestleMania will be back at Allegiant Stadium. "Las Vegas helped to deliver the biggest WrestleMania of all time, shattering records and delivering an amazing week for fans around the world," WWE president Nick Khan said in a news release. "We look forward to once again working with the talented and effective teams at the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Allegiant Stadium to bring WrestleMania back to the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World." Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) CEO Steve Hill, who talked to Fox News Digital earlier this year ahead of WrestleMania 41, touted the return of the event as well. "We are honored that WWE has once again selected Las Vegas to host the biggest event on their calendar," Hill said. "Bringing WrestleMania 42 to Las Vegas underscores our city's reputation for elevating world-class events to new heights. We are excited to build on last year's success and deliver an even more incredible experience for the WWE Universe in 2026." WrestleMania in Las Vegas was just as busy as Super Bowl week in the city. WWE hosted events up and down the Las Vegas Strip, including the Hall of Fame ceremony, the Roast of WrestleMania and WrestleMania After Dark at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas. WWE said "Monday Night Raw," "Friday Night SmackDown" and WWE World will return. NXT Stand & Deliver will also take place in the city. It will be the second time in WrestleMania's history that the show will be hosted in the same city in consecutive years. WrestleMania IV and WrestleMania V were held at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Pro wrestling star Shotzi Blackheart's sultry reason for AEW interest
Shotzi Blackheart will be featured in several independent pro wrestling shows over the next few months after she departed WWE following roughly six years with the company. She appeared on "The Ariel Helwani Show" on Tuesday and discussed the promotions she would be interested in joining as she attempts to find a full-time home. She mentioned that she loved All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Total Nonstop Action wrestling and watches their programming. She explained why AEW would be her preference if she had a choice. "For so many reasons," she said. "I love their freedom. I have a lot of friends there who are doing really awesome things. I've heard many stories of how (AEW co-owner) Tony (Khan) treats talent. I do love that he really cares for his talent – that is super important to me. "And like, hot girls get to make out with each other, so, like, that's cool." For what it's worth on Shotzi's latter point, AEW stars Toni Storm and Mina Shirakawa shared a kiss after their match at Double or Nothing last month. Storm faces Mercedes Moné for the AEW Women's Championship at All In next month. Shotzi, whose real name is Ashley Urbanski, also made clear she loved working for WWE and was only unhappy when she wasn't being used. "I mean, I would love to be back at WWE," she said. "I loved working there. I didn't love not working there. It was only when I wasn't being used that I was unhappy, but anytime I was being used, good time – love the locker room, loved everyone I was working for. That's just it. I just don't want to go back and not work." Shotzi attempted to join WWE through the company's "Tough Enough" challenge in 2015. IT wasn't until 2019 that she joined the NXT brand and worked her way to the main roster. She was an NXT women's tag-team champion with Embar Moon, who wrestles as Athena in the AEW-affiliated Ring of Honor. She was also named the 2020 NXT Breakout Star of the Year. Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Recently released WWE star Shotzi has named AEW as her preferred destination, citing the company's creative freedom and the reputation of its president, Tony Khan, as key factors. In a candid interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, Shotzi discussed her future after her WWE contract was not renewed in May. While she would be open to a return to WWE, she made it clear that AEW is her top choice for a new home. Why AEW Is Her Preference Shotzi explained that her desire to join AEW comes from a place of wanting creative freedom and a supportive environment. She also named several dream opponents she would love to face in the promotion. "I love TNA, I love AEW... AEW is my preference," Shotzi stated. "I love their freedom, I have a lot of friends there who are doing really awesome things. I've heard many stories of how Tony Khan treats talent. So, yeah, I do love that he really cares for his talent. That is super important to me." More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation When asked who she would want to face, she immediately named the ROH Women's World Champion. "First thing that comes to mind, Athena. I think that she's so awesome. I honestly think that she's the best women's wrestler in the world," she said. DORTMUND, GERMANY - NOVEMBER 01: Natalya competes in the ring against Shotzi during the WWE Live Show at Westfalenhalle on November 1, 2022 in Dortmund, Germany. On Her WWE Release And Potential Return Shotzi was let go by WWE shortly after returning from a torn ACL that kept her out of action for most of 2024. She admitted that being released after working hard to come back from such a major injury was difficult. "When you're going through such a huge injury like that... you hope that, 'Well, if I work really hard and come back even better, maybe I'll get rewarded,'" she said. "But unfortunately for me, I was let go." She believes the reason for her release was simple. "WWE doesn't owe me anything. That's showbiz, right? They just didn't think that I was money and that's okay. I can take that." As for a potential return to the company, she is open to it, but with one major condition. "I would love to be back at WWE. I loved working there. I didn't love not working there, you know what I'm saying? It was only when I wasn't being used that I was unhappy," she explained.
