Steelers star addresses Aaron Rodgers' long-winded saga and whether it's become a 'distraction'

Daily Mail23-05-2025

Pittsburgh Steelers star Alex Highsmith has addressed the long-winded saga of the team's pursuit of Aaron Rodgers, as the quarterback remains unsigned with the season three months away.
Rodgers was thought to be a hot commodity in the free-agent market a few months back, but the 41-year-old watched his contemporaries get contracts instead.
While the decision on Rodgers may have been delated due to some close to the quarterback having cancer, the Steelers cannot wait around forever for the four-time MVP to commit to them.
'I just feel like in the locker room and stuff, we're in there working, and I think that's just really what it's about at this point,' Highsmith said on NFL Network. 'I know that if he does sign, we're definitely going to be really excited to have him.'
'We know who he is. He's a Hall-of-Fame quarterback. He's one of the best to ever do it. I wouldn't say it's a distraction at all, but we all know what type of quarterback he is and what he brings to the table.'
The Steelers currently have Mason Rudolph and Will Howard at quarterback heading into 2025 in what may be the least talented quarterback room in the NFL.
If either is chosen as the starter, the Steelers look to be not seriously thinking of winning a Super Bowl.
While Rodgers would not be a long-term solution, for at least one year, he would present a better option with his experience, especially in a loaded AFC North.
The firepower of Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow, as well as the interesting saga in Cleveland's quarterback room, would be matched with either Howard or Rudolph as things stand.
'I think we just try to put our best foot forward every day, like with who's in the building right now,' Highsmith added. 'I know Mason being there, he's done a great job. The guys are rallying around him and, like I said, he's been with us before and guys know him, Pittsburgh fans know him.'
'The way that he helped us finish in 2023 was awesome. No matter who's back there for us, whether it's him or if Aaron Rodgers is gonna come, I'm just excited. Whoever's back there, we're gonna have their backs and we're gonna rally behind them. Just excited for whoever it's gonna be.'

Colts QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder) to miss minicamp

June 5 - Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson aggravated the AC joint in his right shoulder and will not participate in next week's minicamp, head coach Shane Steichen announced Thursday. Richardson reported soreness and will rest his ailing shoulder, the same one that required AC joint surgery in 2023. Surgery is not anticipated this time around, per Steichen, who said the plan is for Richardson to return "at some point" in training camp. "Doctors, trainers checked it out," Steichen explained. "He's got some aggravation in his AC joint. So we're gonna sit him out this week. Obviously, he'll sit out for minicamp. We'll see when he comes back. Not gonna put a timetable for training camp on it, but when he does come back, we'll ease him into throwing, and then we'll go from there. The good thing is he's not gonna need a procedure right now." Richardson, the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, is expected to battle Daniel Jones for the Colts' starting quarterback job this season. "Obviously, it's frustrating, but he is in good spirits," Steichen said. "So we're working through it right now." Richardson, 23, enters his third season with 15 starts under his belt (8-7 record), a 50.6 completion percentage, 11 touchdown passes, 10 rushing touchdowns, 13 interceptions and 12 fumbles (four lost). He completed 47.7 percent of his passes in 2024, historically bad from an accuracy perspective and easily the worst among NFL starters. He had 10 or fewer completions in six of the 11 games he appeared in last season. --Field Level Media

D-backs' Andrew Saalfrank reinstated from betting ban

June 5 - The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated pitcher Andrew Saalfrank from the ineligible list on Thursday, marking the end of his one-year suspension for betting on baseball games. The Diamondbacks optioned the 27-year-old left-hander to the Arizona Complex League. The team designated right-hander Scott McGough for assignment to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. On June 4, 2024, Major League Baseball announced a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder/outfielder Tucupita Marcano for betting on baseball games. Saalfrank, Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and two minor leaguers received one-year bans for violating the league's sports betting rules and policies. An MLB investigation found that Saalfrank placed small-scale bets on big-league games while he was in the minors. He wagered a total of $445 over 29 bets, including four involving Diamondbacks games. Saalfrank made two relief appearances for Arizona in 2024 and allowed four runs in one inning of work. In 2023, he made 10 scoreless relief appearances in the regular season and posted a 3.18 ERA in 11 postseason appearances, including three scoreless outings against the Texas Rangers in the World Series. McGough, 35, has no decisions and a 6.43 ERA in seven relief appearances this season. He is 3-10 with a 5.86 ERA and nine saves in 102 career games (three starts) for the Miami Marlins (2015) and Diamondbacks (2023-25). --Field Level Media
