Salah in tears as Liverpool fans pay tribute to Jota after Bournemouth win

Liverpool star Mo Salah was moved to tears following Liverpool's triumph over Bournemouth as supporters at Anfield paid homage to Diogo Jota.
Tributes poured in for Jota before, during and after the match, following his heartbreaking death in a motor vehicle crash in July.
Salah had netted Liverpool's fourth strike as they repelled a Bournemouth fightback to secure a 4-2 victory at Anfield.
Supporters throughout the ground sang Jota's name once the final whistle sounded, and Salah was clearly moved as he approached the faithful.
"You've just seen there, an outpouring of emotion from Mo Salah," Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said. "I think it's going to be like that for Liverpool players, staff, fans throughout the season.", reports the Mirror.
"It's just going to hit them at moments during games, at the end of games, after victories, after defeats. They'll recognise they've got their team-mate, their colleague, someone they loved, not with them any more. It's incredibly sad, and obviously what we've just seen there from Mo Salah was really special." (Image: Liverpool FC via Getty Images)
Moments earlier, Salah had clinched victory for Liverpool with a stoppage-time goal. However, victory wasn't always assured for the reigning Premier League champions.
Liverpool went in 1-0 up at the break, with Hugo Ekitike scoring on his Premier League debut, and Cody Gakpo doubled the lead early in the second half. The lead didn't last, though, with Antoine Semenyo scoring twice for the visitors.
It looked as though victory would elude victory, only for super-sub Federico Chiesa to volley home from around the penalty spot. The goal was the Italian's first in the Premier League, and just the third he has scored for Liverpool since joining from Juventus.
"I said on commentary that it was a weird decision. Taking [Florian] Wirtz off and Chiesa on," commentator Jamie Carragher said. "But that's a magical moment for him. A last minute winner in front of the Kop. I thought he mis-hit it but he actually got really good contact on it. It doesn't go in with any great pace."
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock was covering the game for BBC Radio 5 Live and he had praise for Salah's clincher. "So often we see him come off the right flank onto his left foot but this time it comes from the opposite side," he said. "He backs the defenders off into the penalty area, cuts inside on his right foot and another pass into that far corner. A quite brilliant finish."

Leeds 1 Everton 0: Lukas Nmecha penalty hands Whites controversial victory on Premier League return

Jack Grealish became the pantomime villain after his introduction LEEDS UNITED are back in the big time - and boy are they back with a bang. A night that started with huge optimism threatened to turn into frustration before new boy Lukas Nmecha blew the roof off Elland Road late on. 5 Lukas Nmecha was the Leeds hero on their return to the Premier League Credit: Reuters 5 Nmecha climbed off the bench to net from 12 yards after a handball Credit: PA Advertisement 5 James Tarkowski was adamant he could not position his arm anywhere else Credit: Getty 5 Leeds largely dominated but struggled to find a breakthrough until late on Credit: Getty 5 Jack Grealish also made his Everton debut Credit: Reuters Daniel Farke's side looked set to come up short in their quest to reward a white-hot atmosphere with a winner. Advertisement But debutant Nmecha was spot-on as he sealed a dream debut by converting a penalty to get Leeds off to a winning start back on their return to the Premier League. The crowd were raucous and there was a feeling that Everton, with just one new signing in their XI, a makeshift left-back in James Garner and best defender Jarrad Branthwaite out with a hamstring issue, were there for the taking. Farke also knew it was a big night for him personally. Advertisement But he silenced any doubters as he racked up just the seventh victory on what was his half century of Prem matches here. It was clearly evident his players were fighting for him as they chased and hunted Everton down like a pack of wild dogs. It's exactly what he was looking for. His summer recruitment, bringing in seven players over 6ft and the other standing 5ft 11in, is evidence enough of how physically imposing he wants his side to be. Ex-Prem ref says there was no foul on Man Utd's goalkeeper by William Saliba during Arsenal loss The electric atmosphere could also have been helped by the free pints provided at the nearby Moot Hall Arms boozer by Jack Harrison. But even a beer doesn't look like healing his relationship with the Leeds faithful any time soon. The 28-year-old has spent the past two years on loan at Everton following the Whites' relegation and he has received a frosty reception since returning in pre-season. And the winger, who received the same reception when he came on late on, was greeted by boos despite picking up the pre-game tab, when he came out to warm-up - although he did himself no favours as he greeted his old team-mates in Blue one-on-one along the touchline. Jayden Bogle and Daniel James were causing Garner all sorts of problems as the Toffees desperately tried to weather the storm. They were struggling to even get out of their half, and had to wait until the half hour mark before they managed to get a touch in the Leeds box. It was wave after wave of attacks as Jake O'Brien's clearance prevented Daniel James from prodding home. You could see the anger in David Moyes, who was in deep discussion with assistant Billy McKinlay, at his side's lack of intensity. Advertisement The fiery Scot has already made it clear he still wants more additions and they desperately needed something here. It looked like the perfect time for Jack Grealish, hoping to rebuild his career on-loan from Manchester City, to step up but Moyes opted for a verbal rocket instead. He only had two new boys in his XI, and by naming two goalkeepers on the bench, he sent another clear message to the board he needs more bodies in. Eye of the Tiger greeted the players as they came back out for the restart and that's exactly what Leeds needed - though the big question was whether they could keep up the onslaught. They started as they left off, but these fans are all too used to heartbreak, and you could feel the tension mounting as the hosts continued to fail and turn their dominance into a goal. Advertisement They thought they had it when the lively Wilfried Gnonto turned and shot into the side-netting. But, agonisingly, the wait for a breakthrough went on. Meanwhile, Moyes had seen enough. His men had failed to land a glove on the Whites and with twenty to go it was time for the introduction of Grealish, who quickly became the pantomime villain. Suddenly, Leeds were finding it tough going and they had new goalie Lucas Perri to thank for denying Carlos Alcaraz at the near post. But maybe things are different now as Leeds had Luk on their side. Advertisement Stach's long-ranger deflected off a defender and was turned wide by the arm of Everton skipper James Tarkowski. German international Nmecha, only on the pitch six minutes, placed the ball and drilled past Pickford to give Leeds the lift-off.

Man Utd have £40m solution to goalkeeper crisis staring them in the face, and it's not Gianluigi Donnarumma

A REFUSAL to sign a goalkeeper — any keeper — has bitten Manchester United firmly on the backside. The club's recruitment team have been so obsessed by boosting their firepower this summer they failed to address the hugely important issue that is lurking right under their noses. 5 Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim should consider signing a goalkeeper Credit: Mark Pain / Alamy Live News 5 Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have proven to be inconsistent in goal Credit: Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images 5 Man Utd won't need Gianluigi Donnarumma Credit: Getty Images 5 Man Utd should consider Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez Credit: Ivan Terron/AFP7/Shutterstock Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, which featured another embarrassing cock-up by Altay Bayindir, once again proved Ruben Amorim must sign a new keeper over the next couple of weeks. United's technical director Jason Wilcox needs to make up his mind whether to bring in either a new No 1 or, at the very least, a decent back-up. Yet you get the impression there is a chance United might not bother bringing anyone in — and that would be an unforgivable mistake. The club can forget about their complete transformation, which is the reason they have spent big at the other end of the pitch, unless they address an obvious problem which is becoming embarrassing. Back-up keeper Bayindir only played against Arsenal on Sunday due to the fact Amorim felt Andre Onana — despite having recovered from a hamstring injury — was not fit enough to return immediately because of a lack of games in pre-season. This is fair enough. After the loss to Arsenal, Amorim reacted with bemusement to a perfectly legitimate question over whether United's third-choice Tom Heaton should have started ahead of Turkish stopper Bayindir as he has played more Premier League games. Bayindir produced some weak goalkeeping from Declan Rice's corner just 13 minutes in at Old Trafford — getting a touch but allowing the ball to loop up and goalwards, gifting Riccardo Calafiori the chance to touch it over the line. This is the same keeper who was beaten directly from a Son Heung-min corner in the chaotic 4-3 Carabao Cup quarter-final loss at Tottenham last December. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS A few weeks earlier than that, in Amorim's first Premier League defeat as manager, Onana and his team conceded two goals at corners in another Premier League defeat to Arsenal. United's keeper coach is Jorge Vital, who arrived with Amorim from Sporting. Watch Ruben Amorim's reaction when asked if Man Utd are signing PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma Man Utd's transfer deals IN Bryan Mbeumo - from Brentford - £71m Matheus Cunha - from Wolves - £62.5m Diego Leon - from Cerro Porteno - £7m Benjamin Sesko - from RB Leipzig - £74m TOTAL - £214.5m OUT Victor Lindelof - released Christian Eriksen - released TOTAL - £0m MAN UTD TRANSFER NEWS LIVE While the manager's English is just outstanding, it seems as though Vital is still getting to grips with the language. Vital, you may remember, was mentioned when Amorim — in an extraordinary dig at Marcus Rashford — said he would have preferred to select the 64-year-old over any player who did not meet his standards. On his podcast, former Old Trafford defender Gary Neville said: 'There's a glaring issue that Manchester United cannot ignore and it is the fact they need to find a goalkeeper. 'They have to. I'm unequivocal on that because I had an experience with Man United for 20 years where there were two big periods of seven or eight years with Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar. 'However, they need to sort the goalkeeper because they concede goals and lose points. And that continually undermines what you are doing.' Some United fans, including Neville, would love to see Gianlugi Donnarumma join the club but this seems unlikely. Donnarumma not the answer For a start, his wages are massive and secondly, although he is an extraordinary shot-stopper and is brilliant at saving penalties, he is not perfect. The Italian is not great with the ball at his feet and he can also be suspect at high balls into the area. This is why Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has decided new arrival Lucas Chevalier has a better 'profile' for his team. SunSport exclusively revealed United have made discreet checks over a remarkable return for club legend David de Gea from Fiorentina. Amorim's side were tipped off that the 34-year-old Spaniard — who kept 190 clean sheets in 545 Red Devils appearances — has a clause in his deal allowing him to leave for a relatively small sum. United have looked at Benfica keeper Diogo Costa but he could cost between £55million and £65m. The club have also been scouting Antwerp's Senne Lammens, 23, and the Belgian could be a decent option as No 2 keeper. Yet the solution for United could well be staring them in the face. Wilcox should make a short trip down the M6 and do a deal with Aston Villa for World Cup-winner Emi Martinez. Surely, the Argentine — suspended for Villa's opening 0-0 draw against Newcastle on Sunday — would jump at the chance. It might cost United up to £40m but he would be worth it.

Youngster's departure to take Liverpool's player sales past £200 million mark

LIVERPOOL ARE about to pass the £200 million (€232 million) mark in player sales this summer, with teenage winger Ben Doak set to complete a move to Bournemouth. The 19-year-old is on the verge of finalising his transfer to the south coast in a £25million (€29 million) deal, the PA news agency understands. Doak, signed from Celtic in 2022 for £600,000, has made 10 appearances for Liverpool in his first two years and spent the whole of last campaign on loan at Championship side Middlesbrough, where he scored three goals in 24 games. He follows Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher and Jarell Quansah out of the club this summer, with the income from those sales going a long way to offset a transfer spend over £300m (€347m). That figure could go higher with Liverpool still retaining an interest in Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi and Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, which would cost them at least another £150m (€174m). However, there are likely to be more departures from Anfield with Kostas Tsimikas — now third-choice left-back after the arrival of Milos Kerkez and not in the squad for Friday's win over Bournemouth — linked with Nottingham Forest. Midfielder Harvey Elliott remains in talks with RB Leipzig, who are likely to make a formal move once Chelsea target Xavi Simons' future is decided. West Ham were also understood to be interested in the England U21 international, but the Bundesliga is currently the most attractive option for him. Elsewhere, French striker Arnaud Kalimuendo has signed a five-year contract with Nottingham Forest, the Premier League club announced on Monday. Advertisement According to French media, the transfer paid to ex-club Rennes is believed to be at least €30 million. 'Nottingham Forest is delighted to announce the signing of Arnaud Kalimuendo, who joins the club on a five-year deal,' read a statement on the English club's website. The 23-year-old came through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain before enjoying a breakthrough season at Ligue 1 side Rennes last year, when he netted 18 times in 34 appearances in all competitions. Before joining Rennes in 2022, he made five appearances for PSG and enjoyed success during loan spells at Lens — scoring 21 goals in 65 outings. 'When I heard about the interest from Forest, I was honoured. This is a proud moment for me, joining a team that had a strong season last year and a club with great history,' said Kalimuendo. 'I'm ready for the challenge, and I arrive here with good experience. I had a good season last year with goals and assists, but I want more and want to reach a new level here.' Two-time European champions Nottingham Forest finished the 2024/25 season in seventh place after surprisingly spending much of the season in the Premier League's top three. Before the start of the new campaign, manager Nuno Espirito Santo endured a disappointing pre-season — no wins and only one goal scored in seven matches — and a disappointing transfer window. However, Forest kick-started the season with a comfortable 3-1 win over Brentford on Sunday and new signings have begun arriving at the City Ground. The recent additions of winger Dan Ndoye, playmaker Omari Hutchinson and ex-Manchester City midfielder James McAtee have bolstered Nuno's squad. Meanwhile, new Rangers signing Jayden Meghoma declared himself 'hungry and excited' to get going at Ibrox after being reunited with Russell Martin. The 19-year-old left-back has joined Rangers on loan in a deal which paves the way for Jefte to complete an anticipated move back to Brazil to sign for Palmeiras. Meghoma made his first-team debut for Southampton under Martin, making four cup appearances in all before signing for Brentford last summer. He has also made four appearances for the Bees and spent the second half of last season on loan at Preston. Finally, Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has ended uncertainty over his future by signing a new long-term contract at the club. The 27-year-old Argentina centre-back, who had been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer, was named as Spurs' new skipper on Wednesday following the departure of Son Heung-min. Romero had entered the final two years of his previous deal, but has put pen to paper on new terms running until 2029, the PA news agency understands. Romero, who starred in Tottenham's Europa League triumph in May, said: 'I'm very happy here in the club. For me, this club is the best in the world.' Full-back Djed Spence has also signed a new deal at Spurs.
