'Stop diarrhoea' drive lays stress on prevention

On Monday, the department reviewed the progress of the drive in which awareness is being spread through mobile vans equipped with posters, banners and audiovisual messages that highlight the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of diarrhoea.
Mission director, National Health Mission, UP, Dr Pinky Jowel, said the theme for this year's campaign is "Prevention of Diarrhoea, Cleanliness, and Self-Care with ORS".
"The objective is not only to prevent diarrhoea but also to promote the use of
ORS and zinc tablets
while fostering a culture of health awareness," she said.
"Key preventive measures include access to
clean drinking water
, improved sanitation, proper hand washing with soap, exclusive breastfeeding, adequate nutrition and timely vaccination," she said.
General manager, Child Health Programme, NHM, UP, Dr Milind Vardhan, said if a child experiences three or more loose stools in a day, it should be considered a case of diarrhoea. Executive Director, PSI India, Mukesh Sharma, said the risk of diarrhoea peaks during the monsoon .

Delhi: 3 hospitals declared sentinel surveillance centres for dengue
Agency: New Delhi, July 27 (PTI) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi designated three hospitals as sentinel surveillance centres and intensified measures to address the seasonal increase in dengue, malaria, and chikungunya cases. On Sunday, the chairperson of the standing committee, Satya Sharma, announced that Hindu Rao Hospital, Swami Dayanand Hospital, and Kasturba Hospital have been equipped as sentinel surveillance hospitals. These facilities will have dedicated beds and specialised resources to manage the expected surge in cases. Sharma stated that 70 beds have been reserved at Hindu Rao Hospital, 22 at Swami Dayanand Hospital, and 75 at Kasturba Hospital. 'All necessary medical supplies, including medicines, IV fluids, and platelets, have been stocked adequately. Round-the-clock availability of doctors, nurses, and technical staff has been ensured to provide timely care," she said. In the event of a spike in dengue cases, arrangements would be made to increase the number of beds and staff. All hospitals have been instructed to remain fully prepared for any medical emergency related to vector-borne diseases. Meanwhile, in response to the rising cholera cases in certain areas of the city, the MCD launched special interventions in locations with unsafe drinking water. Liquid chlorine and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets are being distributed to prevent infections and dehydration. Additionally, Sharma urged citizens to maintain cleanliness in and around their homes, avoid water stagnation, and seek medical attention immediately if they experience any symptoms of illness. Digital twin tech to transform surgical decisions, personalised healthcare: Doc

Using artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, a digital twin creates virtual representative of a patient. It uses their diagnostic reports and images to provide personalised treatment modalities and predict outcomes. The possibility of using this technology in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery (CVTS) was demonstrated on Saturday at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences by Prof KR Balakrishnan, a cardiothoracic and heart transplant surgeon, who has worked closely with IIT-Chennai. "A patient with a cardiac condition visits four cardiac specialists who genuinely suggest different treatment options to him. Informing that the technology allows the use of real-time data of the patient through sensors, medical devices, and electronic health records, he noted: "These digital models allow for simulation, prediction, and optimisation of health outcomes or operational processes within the healthcare environment. It is possible to use them to extend what is known as precision medical care." "The shortage of doctors is a reality that needs a mammoth effort to be dealt with. Doctors even in tertiary care institutes are attending to 300 patients in four hours. Can a specialist do justice to each one of them? It is here that technology like digital twin can help in weeding out extra load of doctors so that they can extend specialised care to those genuinely in need of it," he said.

ASHAs to continue stir till demands met
T'puram: While the Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) have welcomed the Centre's decision to raise their monthly incentive to Rs 3,500, they said they will continue their ongoing strike until the state govt increases their honorarium. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With their strike completing 169 days on Saturday, ASHAs said they wanted the state govt to increase its share correspondingly. The state govt stated that they have increased their share of the honorarium to the maximum and have set up a committee to study the problems faced by the health workers under National Health Mission. On Saturday, the ASHAs remained at their protest location in front of the Secretariat. Their leader Mini S said the protest would continue until the state govt increases its share. The state share is Rs 7,000. After the increase by Centre, ASHAs will now receive Rs 15,000 as honorarium. However, many other states, including Maharashtra, are giving Rs 10,000 as their share, she added. BJP state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar, meanwhile, said the central govt has kept its promise and the state should promptly increase the wages of ASHAs. The central govt has reiterated in Parliament that decisions on administrative and human resource issues, including those of ASHAs in the health sector, should be made by the respective state govts, he added. The central govt is providing all possible benefits for ASHAs, recognising them as frontline warriors in the health sector, Chandrasekhar said. tnn
