Egypt's Electricity Minister discusses progress on Greece power link

Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy has met with the head of Greece's Copelouzos Group to discuss the latest developments in an electricity interconnection project that aims to export renewable energy from Egypt to Europe via Greece, the ministry said.
The meeting between Minister Mahmoud Essmat and Dimitris Copelouzos at the ministry's headquarters in the Administrative Capital reviewed the progress of the project, which is a key part of Egypt's strategy to become a regional hub for energy exchange.
'The electricity interconnection with Europe via Greece will make Egypt a regional centre for energy exchange between the world's continents and will maximise the returns from renewable energy,' Essmat said in a statement.
He added that the project is of great importance for achieving sustainable development and is part of a general strategy of electrical interconnection with neighbouring countries, with the goal of linking to the European electricity grid.
The meeting covered developments in the project, which will rely on power generated from new solar and wind energy projects in Egypt. The discussions included the locations for these projects, the routes for power transmission lines, and the results of meetings between the electricity grid operators in Egypt and Greece.
The two sides also discussed the procedures for tendering and European offers, as well as the need to develop and support the national grids in both countries to accommodate the new capacity for transmitting power to the European grid.
Essmat described interconnection projects as 'bridges of friendship' that support sustainable development among nations. He noted that the political leadership is highly interested in such projects and that Egypt is actively participating in all regional interconnection initiatives.
'The work continues within the framework of the state's plan to maximise returns and effectively manage and utilise renewable energy sources from natural resources,' Essmat said, adding that the project is a crucial gateway for connecting Egypt and Europe.

Natural Gas drops below $3: Key drivers behind the move

By Daniela Sabin Hathorn, senior market analyst at Natural gas prices have finally broken below the critical $3 support level—a threshold that had consistently capped downside moves since the beginning of the year. After an initial dip beneath this level was quickly reversed, last week saw renewed bearish momentum, culminating in a nine-month low on Tuesday. Since then, prices have stabilised, with $2.85 emerging as a near-term support. Currently, natural gas is trading within a familiar range of $2.78 to $3.12—a zone that has historically seen frequent two-way price action. In the absence of a new catalyst, this suggests a potential period of sideways consolidation may be underway. Natural Gas (XNG/USD) daily chart Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. Fundamental drivers behind the price drop: The recent decline in natural gas prices can be traced to a combination of seasonal, structural, and geopolitical factors. Despite strong long-term fundamentals, short-term pressure has emerged from several key developments. First, weaker seasonal and industrial demand is contributing to the softening in prices. As the heatwave season begins to ease across major U.S. regions, electricity demand is starting to wane. This drop-off in peak power consumption is reducing near-term natural gas usage and putting downward pressure on spot prices. Industrial demand has also moderated slightly amid slower-than-expected manufacturing output. Furthermore, the supply side remains strong. Rising production and improved infrastructure are helping to keep the market well-supplied. The U.S. natural gas industry continues to pivot strategically toward more gas-focused drilling. This trend is being supported by the expansion of takeaway capacity through major pipeline projects. These developments are easing bottlenecks and facilitating higher throughput, increasing available supply in key hubs. Another important factor is the global expansion in LNG capacity, which has significant implications for price stability, which can lead to softer prices in Europe and Asia. While this supports U.S. export volumes in the long run, the flood of available supply—both domestically and internationally—may cap upside potential for U.S. prices, particularly if demand plateaus or weather-related consumption fails to spike. Finally, there's a geopolitical lens to consider. The market is beginning to factor in the possibility of a 'peace dividend', particularly if negotiations surrounding the war in Ukraine gain momentum. A de-escalation of that conflict would likely reduce the geopolitical premium currently embedded in global energy pricing. European prices have already shown signs of moderation on the back of easing tension, and a similar sentiment recalibration could weigh on U.S. gas if risk premia continue to unwind. In short, while structural demand for natural gas remains robust, a convergence of milder weather, strong production, global supply growth, and shifting geopolitical dynamics are all contributing to the recent correction in U.S. natural gas prices.

French president calls for UN mission into Gaza, slams Israel's plan to expand war

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday called for a United Nations 'stabilization' mission to protect the civilian population in Gaza and disarm Hamas, as international outrage grows around Israel's planned military takeover of Gaza City. Israel's announced expansion of the conflict constitutes 'a disaster of unprecedented gravity and a headlong rush into permanent war. The Israeli hostages and the people of Gaza will continue to be the first victims of this strategy,' Macron said in a statement. The French leader's appeal echoes a document signed by 17 countries, the European Union and the Arab League in July that called for such a mission, if requested by the Palestinian Authority. The temporary force, for which some signatories were ready to provide troops, would protect the civilian population, monitor any future peace agreement and oversee the transfer of security responsibilities to the PA in Gaza. 'This war must end now with a permanent ceasefire,' the French president said, calling on the UN Security Council, of which France is a permanent member, to establish such a peacekeeping force. 'It is the only credible way to begin to emerge from the permanent war and rebuild peace and security for all,' Macron said. Other European leaders call for peace: Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said Monday that the war in Gaza 'must stop,' adding that 'journalists must be allowed to do their work safely and without interference' and calling for a ceasefire. Tanja Fajon, Slovenia's foreign minister, spoke out about the killings of several Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza Monday. The killings are 'unacceptable and shameful,' she said on social media, adding that 'attacking journalists is attacking freedom of the press. Attacking the truth.'
