The cult of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty', explained

Breanna Quigley thought of everything.
For her watch party last week for the debut of "The Summer I Turned Pretty" Season 3, the 24-year-old in Charlotte, North Carolina, had custom cookies, matching pool floats, a popcorn machine, a custom painted banner, a big speaker, seashell place mats, a fish net table runner, blue hydrangeas ... the list goes on.
Each item was a reference to the show about a love triangle between Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) and brothers Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno) as they navigate life, growing pains and one immeasurable loss.
Blue water appeared on Quigley's blow-up TV screen as she and her friends watched from her pool, chimes sounding as the opening credits played like a call to worship for the devout fans of Jenny Han's fan-favorite novels-turned-Amazon Prime Video series.
Quigley, who dropped $350 on her event, is among many fans gathering at one another's homes and public venues weekly to enjoy the guilty pleasure of watching Belly navigate her love for two boys she's known her whole life – and that each present a different future for her.
Where to watch Season 3: What time does Episode 3 of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' come out?
The watch parties are pure sun-soaked indulgence for viewers who know deep in their souls whether they're Team Jeremiah or Team Conrad – and are ready to present a thesis as to why. Series creators even issued a foreboding warning imploring fans to refrain from online harassment as the angst of the season plays out.
Conrad or Jeremiah? How 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' books end
"I think the show has such a following because of how it makes you feel," Quigley said. "Everyone loves summer romance and I feel a lot of people can relate and love to see Belly choose between brothers. It's funny because the show can be pretty cringey but it's cute."
Be in Belly's world: 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' gets a character-inspired shoe collection at Steve Madden
Emphasis on the cringe. Some viewers are really embarrassed about the degree of investment they have in Season 3, despite watching these young lovers through their fingers.
"I'm one episode in and already cringing and very uncomfy," posted one audience member.
so cringey but I can't not watch it #thesummeriturnedpretty #conniebaby
When Belly and Jeremiah middle-school-style slow dance to "Dilemma" by Kelly Rowland and Nelly at a college frat party, one viewer physically twinged with second-hand shudders. Fans' significant others are watching from the other room, stunned and bewildered by the dynamics of a girl who loves two siblings. Bearing witness to the "icks" on screen are a test of endurance.

But why do we watch anyway, and get so invested? It reminds us so much of our own loves, the ones we lost or never had, according to Alicia M. Walker, professor of sociology at Missouri State University.
"Maybe we're cringing, but we might be a bit jealous, too," Walker said.
Who wouldn't want to experience love for the first time against the lustful backdrop of fictional Cousins Beach, an idyllic East Coast town, Walker said. The raw unabashed relationships on screen, while we recoil, may remind viewers of any age of the significant impact of being chosen for simply being yourself, Walker said.
"The show doesn't just depict first love, it restores its emotional weight," Walker said. "The show almost doesn't feel like fiction, it feels like memory."
this is so amazing aaa #thesummeriturnedpretty #summer #bryantpark #teamjeremiah #teamconrad #fyp #thingstodoinnyc @the summer i turned pretty
The cult of "TSITP" is especially powerful because its ethos juxtaposes our cultural zeitgeist, one deprived of connection and defined by division, she said. We want something we can all gather around right now and root for, awkwardness included, she said.
"It ends up being emotional comfort food during this time," Walker said. "The cult following around the show really shows how starved we are for something that we can feel, not just watch. The characters become avatars for our own longing, heartbreak, hopefulness and grief ... Whether you're 17 or 57, that hunger for connection, clarity and care is real and this show feeds that."

'My Best Friend's Wedding 2' Is in the Works With a Script by Celine Song

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. Rom-com lovers, stand up. My Best Friend's Wedding—the 1997 classic starring Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz, and Dermot Mulroney—is getting a sequel decades later. Collider reported that the project is in 'very early development' (emphasis theirs) at Sony with Celine Song writing the script. This is huge news for fans of romance, yearning, and love triangles. The original film follows Julianne (Roberts) and her best friend, Michael (Mulroney), who promised each other they'd get married if they were still single by the time they turned 28. (This cutoff didn't age well, we know.) But when Michael finally gets engaged, Julianne realizes she's actually in love with him. News of the sequel, which arrives 28 (!) years later, brings up some important questions like: What will be 2025's answer to 'Say a Little Prayer'? Can anyone remove a ring stuck on someone's finger as smoothly as Dermot Mulroney? As we wait to learn more, here's everything we know about My Best Friend's Wedding 2 so far. It's too early to say, and it's still unclear whether the sequel will bring back the original characters or which stars are confirmed to return. Celine Song, the acclaimed filmmaker and writer behind Materialists and Past Lives, is writing the screenplay, but she will not be directing, per Variety. Song has shown her expertise in romance (and love triangles) in her two films. She recently told ELLE, 'Love is meaningless unless it's unconditional. And that, to me, is non-negotiable.' While they've yet to address the recent news, the stars have opened up about a potential follow-up film. On July 25, Mulroney vaguely hinted at sequel plans. 'I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote,' he told New York Post while promoting Netflix's The Hunting Wives. Roberts even expressed interest back in 2023. When asked on Watch What Happens Live which of her films she'd like to see a sequel for, she replied, 'I think, maybe, My Best Friend's Wedding,' according to Deadline. 'Because there's so many people in it, and to see what they're doing and how Kimmy and Michael's marriage is going and…' And when host Andy Cohen asked her who Michael should have married, she added, 'Well, I mean, of course, Jules, but he married Kimmy.' Could this be a seed for the sequel? The original My Best Friend's Wedding is available to rent or buy on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV+. Watch Now on Prime Video Watch Now on Apple TV+

Prime Video's latest No. 1 show is a 'Bosch' spinoff with Maggie Q — and it's 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. "Bosch" fans, rejoice: it sounds like Prime Video's follow-up is going to continue the series' legacy as a compelling crime drama. On July 9, the Amazon streaming service dropped the full first season of "Ballard," a new spin-off that shifts focus from Titus Welliver's Harry Bosch over to Renée Ballard (Maggie Q), the detective introduced in April's "Bosch: Legacy" series finale. One day after release, the show had risen to the No. 2 spot on the Amazon streamer (putting it second only to the lackluster action thriller, "Countdown"), but in the few days since, "Ballard" has become the streamer's top watch. Plus, "Ballard" has continued to hold onto that impressive 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning reviewers who've tuned in have liked what they saw. Ready to dive in? You can stream all 10 episodes of "Ballard" on Prime Video right now, or you can find a little more info — and hear what critics have to say — about Prime's newest release below. What is 'Ballard' about? If you're not up to speed, "Ballard" is Prime Video's next series based on Michael Connelly's books. Here, we follow Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q), who is charged with leading the LAPD's underfunded cold case division and taking on some of Los Angeles' toughest long-forgotten cases. Per the series synopsis, we know the series sees her investigating layers of crime that go back decades, including a serial killer's string of murders; as she does so, Ballard unearths a deadly conspiracy within the force, and enlists the help of her team and Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) to crack her cases, navigating personal and professional challenges along the way. In addition to Q and Welliver, "Ballard" also features Courtney Taylor, John Carroll Lynch, Michael Mosley, Rebecca Field, Victoria Moroles, Amy Hill, Ricardo Chavira, Noah Bean, and more. Should you stream 'Ballard' on Prime Video? If you haven't already started binging the 10-episode series on Prime Video, you'll be pleased to know that the first "Ballard" reviews are in... and the new "Bosch" spin-off has been warmly received. As we mentioned above, the series has earned a rare 100% approval rating from critics on the review aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes. Admittedly, that score's only aggregated from nine individual reactions, but it's still an encouraging sign to see every critic who's reviewed the series (at the time of writing) liked what they saw. Reviewing for Variety, Aramide Tinubu, for example, called "Ballard" "one of the best police procedurals on TV," adding: "Smartly acted, beautifully paced and genuinely engaging, "Ballard" is a thrilling ride from start to finish." Similarly, Sherin Nicole praised the series for its "well sculpted" characters and for being "grounded by grit, genuine leads, and complex cases," adding: "This series fits right in with 'Bosch' and 'Bosch: Legacy': strident, true-to-life characters doing emotionally crushing work while dealing with the people and things that make life harder." CBR's Brittany Frederick gave the series an 8/10 score, arguing it was "rougher around the edges" than the previous Michael Connelly shows, but was nevertheless entertaining in its own right. "While "Ballard" isn't as iconic as its predecessor," she writes, "it is a worthy addition to the "Bosch" universe and a high-quality crime drama that will keep viewers satisfied for hopefully years to come." Comparatively, audience reactions for "Ballard" have been a little more split; it's landed an 80% rating from fans on Rotten Tomatoes. There are still a number of 5-star reviews present on the platform — one viewer branding it "another Michael Connelly masterpiece" — but some fans aren't nearly as keen; in a 1.5-star rating, one viewer said the series was "one cliché after another" and "a dull parody of a police procedural." Nevertheless, there are more positive takes logged at present, and, in tandem with the critics' takes, the consensus seems to be that "Ballard" is worth your time. In short, if you were sad to see "Bosch" come to an end, or you just love getting wrapped up in a fresh case, most people who've streamed the show recommend you stream "Ballard" on Prime Video as soon as possible.
