'We would rather have a dead rubber'

BBC News25-07-2025
Stephen Frail would rather have a dead rubber than qualification on the line in Kilmarnock's final game of the Premier Sports Cup stage stage. The Rugby Park side top Group H but are just a point clear of Saturday's visitors East Fife and fellow Premiership side Livingston, who host Kelty Hearts.Killie could only draw 0-0 at Kelty in midweek before missing out on a bonus point with defeat on penalties."It's all good having a competitive edge but if I'm being honest we'd rather have a dead rubber," said assistant manager Frail."It has got that edge, East Fife are in this mini table because they've got results."We know how tough the game will be, me and the manager watched them last week against Kelty and they got the 1-0 win."We didn't beat Kelty, so we know they've got qualities, an experienced manager and management team."We know the threat they will pose coming in and they will be definitely hoping to win, to progress if other results go their way, so we need to make sure that doesn't happen."

'Dinosaur football' or 'professional performance'?

We asked for your views on Hearts' 2-0 win against what some of you said: Keith: Thoroughly professional performance, looked strong in every department and have a physicality to dig in when required, Derek McInnes has been flawless since his Couldn't believe the team selection. Three at the back, two full-backs and no wingers when we're at home? Aimless 40-yard cross-field passes! If their striker hadn't missed that sitter, we'd have been embarrassed. When we changed shape on 75 minutes we looked far better. Harry Milne, Finlay Pollock, Craig Halkett and Oisin McEntee were excellent but Christian Borchgrevink and Blair Spittal are not the answer. Grateful for the three points but I don't think we scared any of the other Good start in the first half, really good second half. Aberdeen had a good couple of chances from cross balls which was quite alarming considering the height we had at the back but over the piece it was good to see a bit of fight for the second ball. The new signings look good A hard-fought three points and not really until the second went in did we manage the game. Aberdeen huffed and puffed but were really poor in front of goal. Cameron Devlin and McEntee maintained real composure and tenacity in the last 15 to get us over the line comfortably. Every player is coming onto the pitch with drive and ambition to do well. Great first match under the Good result and new signings look lively and better than what we have. However with the aimless long balls up the park we looked like Scotland at the Euros by passing over the midfield. Likely to be third or fourth, but this dinosaur football is not a good watch, we need a progressive A very different feeling to this team, dealt well with all they have faced so far. They have a growing confidence, and increasing knowledge of what their teammates are capable of. Goals are coming from many sources and that is very encouraging, especially with Lawrence Shankland in amongst them.

Edinburgh City have today been hit with a 15-point deduction by the Scottish Professional Football League relating to an insolvency event. The League Two side appointed a provisional liquidator in July this year, and league officials have reacted with a hefty punishment to leave City isolated at the foot of the table. An SPFL statement read: 'The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) has today confirmed the imposition of a 15-point deduction for Edinburgh City, as per SPFL rules on clubs suffering an insolvency event. This deduction follows a provisional liquidator being appointed in respect of the club on July 22 this year in relation to an unpaid debt due by the club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'Similar to administration, the provisional appointment of a liquidator is an insolvency event under SPFL Rules. The William Hill League Two table has been updated accordingly.' Rule E1 of the SPFL rules and regulations states that 'where a club takes, suffers or is subject to a deductible insolvency event that club shall…be deducted 15 points and 5 points in the League in consecutive seasons'. City intend to appeal the decision and posted a comment on their social media channels. 'Edinburgh City FC hereby acknowledges the penalty imposed upon it by the SPFL this morning,' they said. 'The club will begin its appeal process immediately. No further comment will be made at this time.' Edinburgh City began their League Two campaign on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat against Stirling Albion at Meadowbank. Their Premier Sports Cup campaign ended miserably with 4-1 and 4-0 defeats against Partick Thistle and Queen of the South respectively. Following a 0-0 draw with Stranraer - City won 5-3 on penalties - the Capital side then suffered a demoralising 8-0 loss at Ross County. Kilmarnock boss backs defender to bring 'quality' once he's up to speed with new club

The former Motherwell man made hus debut as a late substitute against Livingston Kilmarnock boss Stuart Kettlewell has backed new boy Dominic Thompson to bring 'quality' to the squad once he's fully up and running. ‌ The 25-year-old's signing was announced just hours before their Premiership opener at home to Livingston, with the former Motherwell man making his debut as a late substitute. ‌ That didn't exactly go to plan, however, as he was beaten by Lewis Smith down Killie's left flank with the winger then teeing up Scott Pittman for the equaliser. ‌ The departure of Corrie Ndaba to Serie A side Lecce last week had left the Rugby Park side with no natural left-back in the squad although youngster Ben Brannan - predominantly a right-back - had played there regularly during the League Cup group stages and once again got the nod at the weekend. Kettlewell had previously signed Thompson during his time at Motherwell, although he left the Fir Park hotseat just two days after bringing the former Blackpool full-back on board. ‌ The new arrival has signed a one-year deal at Rugby Park, with Kettlewell saying: 'Dom's somebody that I know, that I've signed before. We spoke about trying to get a balance to our team on the left side. Ben Brannan was good again and he filled that slot for us. 'We need to get Dom up to speed but it's safe to say it's an area of the pitch where we do need that cover and balance.' He added: 'Knowing him as I did for a short space of time working with him, then I think he's somebody that brings good quality. He had a good six months with Motherwell and he wants to hit the ground running here. 'Getting him up to speed and getting him fully fit — I think he gives us that wee bit of strength down the left-hand side.'
