Bumble's paying user drop sparks concerns over pace of AI-driven revamp

Reuters3 days ago
Aug 6 (Reuters) - Bumble's (BMBL.O), opens new tab paying users fell in the second quarter, the dating app operator said on Wednesday, clouding hopes of a quick turnaround and sending its shares slumping 8% in extended trading.
The company, which operates an eponymous app, has turned to artificial intelligence to combat the "dating fatigue" that has plagued the industry.
Analysts, however, say Bumble has trailed bigger rival Tinder-parent Match Group (MTCH.O), opens new tab as many of the company's efforts remain in early testing phases.
The dating app's total paying users decreased by 8.7% to 3.8 million in the second quarter.
"The primary concern at this stage remains the headwinds in paying user growth, which Bumble needs to address to re-engage its core audience," said Chandler Willison, research analyst at M Science.
In the three-month period to June, the company posted a net loss of $367.0 million, including $404.9 million of non-cash impairment charges, compared to a net profit of $37.7 million, a year earlier.
The company, which named a new chief financial officer, did not specify the reasons behind its one-time cost.
In its bet to provide real connections, Bumble has introduced a new coaching hub powered by both human expertise and artificial intelligence.
The company said on Wednesday it would introduce an all-new Bumble BFF application this month to woo Gen Z customers and will also have new community-focused events to help users build offline friendships.
Bumble posted second-quarter revenue of $248.2 million, compared with analysts' average estimate of $245.1 million, according to data compiled by LSEG.
The company said Kevin Cook, who was recently financial head at data management platform Cloudera, would succeed interim CFO Ronald Fior, effective August 12.
Bumble forecast third-quarter revenue between $240 million and $248 million, largely above analysts' estimates of $241.4 million, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Experts reveal the mortgage number that could save US housing market

The housing market is under strain with prices falling as families are unwilling to move and refinance their mortgages at current rates. However, a glimmer of hope arrived when the average daily mortgage rate fell to 6.57 percent on Monday — the lowest in 10 months — according to a new report from Redfin. However, experts have revealed that it will take much lower rates to revive the flagging market. Nationwide mortgage rates would have to fall more than two percent to 4.43 percent to make the typical home affordable for a median-income family, a new report from Zillow claims. The analysis defined affordable monthly payments to be less than 30 percent of a household's income, and assumed a 20 percent down payment. The two percentage point drop would make cities such as Dallas, New Orleans and Nashville affordable, according to the study. On the other hand cities with extortionately high housing costs - such as New York, Los Angeles and Miami - would not become affordable even if rates fell to 0 percent. On the other end of the spectrum areas of the US where home prices are much lower would remain affordable even if rates climbed higher than they are now. For example, the report cites Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the average home is $244,928 compared to the national average of $369,147. A median-income family could still buy a home there even if rates jumped to 9 percent, Zillow found. Birmingham Alabama, Detroit, Michigan and Buffalo, New York are also areas that would remain affordable if rates surged above 7 percent again. Even with rates falling Zillow expects prices to end the year two percent lower than the start. 'That small decline won't be much of a setback to most homeowners' equity following the 49 percent increase since 2019,' Zillow economist Anushna Prakash wrote. 'It also won't move the needle very far for first-time buyers priced out of the market,' she explained. 'Home prices and/or mortgage rates would need to drop by massive amounts to make a typical home affordable for a median-income family.' Prakesh added that those waiting for a price crash large enough to make buying affordable shouldn't hold their breath. Without an alarming slowdown in economic growth and a rise in the unemployment rate a correction is unlikely. Investors are now waiting with bated breath to see if the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its September meeting. Fed chair Jerome Powell has provoked the wrath of Trum p by continuing to hold benchmark rates between 4.25 and 4.5 percent. The most recent jobs report showed hiring growth dropped dramatically last month and unemployment ticked up , a key metric that may entice the Fed to cut rates. Non-farm payrolls added 73,000 in July, far lower than the 100,000 expected by analysts. The unemployment rate also ticked up to 4.2 percent. Last year the 'Oracle of Wall Street' Meredith Whitney told the Daily Mail that rates need to drop below 6 percent to get the market moving .

Two telltale signs someone has looked at your phone without your permission – set it up today & it'll catch ANY snooper

I-CAUGHT! The 'pick-up' trick is a dead giveaway Published: 7:30, WANT to expose a snooper looking through your phone? There's a simple setting that'll catch them red-handed. But you'll need to switch it on ahead of time or it won't work. 3 The trick works using Screen Time, which is a built-in Apple feature on your iPhone. It's switched off by default, but you can turn it on to track snoopers. Screen Time is meant to be used as a way to keep track of how much you're using your mobile. And you can even use it to set limits – even on specific apps – if you think you're spending too much time scrolling. Once you activate Screen Time, it stays on in the background. And it'll pull together loads of data about how you're using your phone. This is the key to seeing if someone has been having a peek at your mobile while you're not looking. HOW TO TURN ON SCREEN TIME There's an entire section dedicated to Screen Time in your Settings app. Just go to Settings > Screen Time and then toggle the feature on. Then it'll get to work – but keep in mind it'll only show data collected after it was turned on. iPhone 16e review – I've secretly tested Apple's cheapest mobile and I love the new button but that's not the best bit Anything that happened on your phone before you activated Screen Time won't appear on the feature. If you change your mind at any time, you can turn Screen Time off by following the same steps. Screen Time reveals exactly when certain apps have been used. This is a great way to see if someone has been using an app when you know you weren't on your phone. 3 Maybe you were fast asleep and it was a 3am WhatsApp check – or perhaps someone looked through your photos while you were in the toilet. Whatever the case, it's easy to check. Just go to Settings > Screen Time > See All App & Website Activity. Make sure you have it set to Today and look at the list at the bottom. Also, make sure it's showing the apps view and not categories. SCREEN TIME'S SECRET EYE PERK There's another benefit of Screen Time – a clever eye strain reducing feature... Go into Settings > Screen Time and then tap on Screen Distant. Then turn the Screen Distance feature on. It's meant to protect you from eye strain by warning you if you're holding your iPhone too close to your face. "Viewing something like a device or book too closely for an extended period of time can increase eye strain and the risk of myopia," Apple explained. "The Screen Distance feature in Screen Time uses the TrueDepth camera to detect when you hold your iPhone closer than 12 inches for an extended period, and encourages you to move it farther away. "Screen Distance can help children engage in healthy viewing habits that can lower their risk of myopia and can give people of all ages the opportunity to reduce digital eyestrain." If you get the alert, it'll appear as a whole-screen pop-up. And you'll need to either tap Continue or move your iPhone more than 12 inches away from you're face. Picture Credit: Apple / The Sun Then simply tap on the app in question – like Instagram, Photos, or WhatsApp. You can then see the exact hour slots where that specific app was used. And if you hold your finger on it, it'll even show how many minutes it was used for. So if you had a lovely night's sleep and your Messages app was opened at 2am, you know something is up. 3 Another option is to go to Settings > Screen Time > See All App & Website Activity, and then scroll down to the Pickups setion. This will show the times when your phone was picked up. And it'll also flag the time of the "First Pickup" of the day. That's another great way of catching suspicious movement, especially in the night.
