Nintendo Exploring Ways To Reduce High Cost Of Games

Yahoo09-07-2025
In a recent investor meeting, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa spoke of ways to deal with the rising cost of games on the Nintendo Switch 2.
During the call, Furukawa spoke on a variety of concerns that have arisen alongside the success of the Nintendo Switch 2. One issue in particular was the 'higher game development cost, which in turn could result in higher software prices and ultimately a decrease in the gaming population.' On this, the Nintendo president said, 'Our development teams are devising various ways to maintain our traditional approach to creating games amidst the increasing scale and length of development.'
Furukawa added, 'We also believe it is possible to develop game software with shorter development periods that still offer consumers a sense of novelty. We see this as one potential solution to the concern about rising development costs and software prices, and we will explore it from various angles within the company.' Furukawa also highlighted the importance of 'making necessary investments for more efficient development,' however, did not specify what that would entail.
As integrating AI into the development process has been a controversial issue, Nintendo has sent out some conflicting messages with Furukawa stating it could be used in 'creative ways,' while Shigeru Miyamoto has said Nintendo would go in, 'a different direction.' Crunch is another potential concern of 'efficient development,' however, Nintendo has had a fairly decent track record in avoiding crunch during its development periods.
While Nintendo looks to explore ways of reducing the cost of its games, it also seems somewhat commited to keeping prices where they are, as during the meeting the topic of the Switch 2 costing more than previous consoles came up, to which Fukuwara responded, 'We believe the pricing of Nintendo Switch 2 is appropriate for the gaming experience it offers.
Nintendo has dropped the prices of its consoles in the past; however, with the Nintendo Switch 2 sales seemingly set to cross 5.4 million when official figures are released, it seems unlikely that Nintendo will find itself in a position where such a move is necessary.

Must-have item sparks Aussie shopping spree

Bargain-hunting Australians and the arrival of the new Nintendo Switch unexpectedly bumped retail sales in June. Retail sales surged 1.2 per cent in June, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the biggest monthly jump since November 2021 when Aussies flocked to stores post Covid lockdowns. This smashed expectations that retail sales would grow by 0.4 per cent in June. ABS head of business statistics Robert Ewing said the spike in retail sales was largely driven by end-of-financial year sales and the launch of the latest Nintendo video game console. 'Consumers are targeting sales events with a focus on value for big-ticket items like household furniture, bedding, electronic devices and TVs,' Mr Ewing said. 'Turnover for electrical and gaming retailers was lifted further by the much-anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, which delivered record sales.' Spending for the month was driven by non-food related purchasing, led by household goods retailing (up 2.3 per cent) and other retailing (up 1.9 per cent). There was also a strong bump in department store sales (up 1.9 per cent), and clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing, which jumped 1.5 per cent. The ABS says this jump was due to end-of-financial-year sales of winter clothing items. Food-related spending also rose after a fall last month. While food retailing bounced back 0.9 per cent, spending in cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services fell 0.4 per cent. Oxford Economics Australia head of economic research and global trade Harry Murphy Cruise said retail trade data created the perfect trifecta for an August rate cut. 'Just as the RBA looked through the noise in monthly measures of consumer prices, the board will do the same for June's higher-than-expected retail sales print,' he said. 'It's the trend that matters, and on that front, the trend of soft retail sales, labour market weakness and easing inflation make a perfect trifecta for an August rate cut.' KPMG chief economist Brendan Rynne said the surge in spending showed Australians were still under financial pressure. 'As cost-of-living pressures continue, households are very much vying for bargains wherever they can, with sale items now consuming a far larger portion of our spending compared to just a few years ago,' Dr Rynne said. 'This month's results show despite a lift in household savings in the first quarter of the year, families have sought to tighten their belts further to ensure they're getting the biggest bang for their buck and only buying items they absolutely need, unless it's a one-off purchase.' Despite the welcome bump for Australian businesses, consumer spending overall remains week. KPMG points out that on a per capita basis, retail volumes fell 0.1 per cent in the June quarter after falling 0.4 per cent in the previous quarter, reflecting ongoing restraint in consumer spending. Compared with the same time last year, retail volumes per capita are down 0.1 per cent and are now 6.0 per cent below the June 2022 quarter peak. But zooming out, KMPG says this is still 3.2 per cent higher than the pre-pandemic level recorded in the December 2019 quarter.

Australia June retail sales jump as discounts, Nintendo Switch lure shoppers

SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australian retail sales surged in June as the launch of Nintendo's Switch 2 and discounting at the end of the financial year drew consumers back to the shops, though sales volumes for the second quarter as a whole were subdued. Raising hopes that a long-awaited recovery in consumption could be on the way, retail sales jumped 1.2% in June from May, when they rose 0.5%, data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed. That was well above forecasts of a 0.4% increase and marked a second straight month of gains as well as the biggest monthly climb since March 2022. "After steady growth throughout the year, mid-year sales events increased spending on discretionary items like furniture, electrical goods and clothing items," said Robert Ewing, the bureau's head of business statistics. "Turnover for electrical and gaming retailers was lifted further by the much-anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, which delivered record sales." The data is not expected to have much impact on interest rate policy. Investors are pricing in a near-certain chance that the Reserve Bank of Australia could lower its cash rate of 3.85% by a quarter-point next month. Rates are seen bottoming out near 3.1% by early next year. The RBA has cut interest rates by 50 basis points since February, but consumers have stayed stubbornly frugal, choosing to save windfalls from tax cuts rather than spending. Thursday's report showed sales gained across the board, except for spending at cafes and restaurants. Spending on household goods items jumped 2.3% while spending at department stores surged 1.9%. For the quarter, sales volumes edged up 0.3%, better than forecasts for a flat result, but still historically sluggish, especially given strong population growth. It was the last set of data for the retail sales series, which will be replaced by a monthly household spending indicator that covers 68% of household consumption, more than double the retail survey. 8BitDo's wireless Nintendo 64 controller is now available

Analogue's 4K remake of the Nintendo 64 has been delayed again and again due to the US tariff situation. But at least you can get 8BitDo's updated take on the N64 controller, which was announced alongside the Analogue 3D, while you wait. You can get one through Amazon in white or black for $39.99 and while it's one of 8BitDo's more budget-friendly controllers, its functionality is limited. The Nintendo 64, which launched in 1996, had an unusual three-prong controller design, with a single analog joystick in the center of the gamepad above the middle grip. The 8BitDo 64 offers the same buttons as the N64's controller in a more traditional layout, but while it's easier to hold, the lack of a second joystick limits its compatibility with modern games, which generally expect two. The 8BitDo 64 is compatible with the Switch, Switch 2 (after updating the controller's firmware), Windows, and Android devices and connects to consoles, PCs, and mobile devices using either a Bluetooth connection or a USB cable. It also features more durable Hall effect joysticks and shoulder buttons which should help prevent it from developing stick drift over time. But if you're not planning to use it with the Analogue 3D (someday), the controller will potentially only be useful for playing classic N64 games through an emulator or the Nintendo Switch Online service but your GoldenEye 007 muscle memory may not perfectly transfer over to the updated button layout. Nintendo's own wireless N64 controller is a more accurate reproduction, but you still need to be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber to buy one.
