Coastal resilience: Cuddalore, Thoothukudi to get bioshields
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Thangam Thennarasu made the announcements while replying to the demand for grants for his department in the Assembly on Saturday. Among the coastal initiatives, the state government plans to create bioshields in Cuddalore and Thoothukudi at a cost of Rs 10 crore to enhance coastal resilience, protect natural ecosystems and support local livelihoods. Similarly, in a Rs 4-crore pilot project under TN-SHORE, the state government will set up three material recovery facilities for plastic waste in Chennai, Ramanathapuram, and Thoothukudi at Rs 1 crore. Separately, trash booms will be introduced to prevent plastic waste from reaching the ocean through rivers at a cost of Rs 4 crore. The waste will be recovered and recycled.
Since Tamil Nadu faces numerous challenges, including emission of greenhouse gases, waterbody encroachments and air pollution, the government is planning to restore Sanjeevi hills in Rajapalayam by removing invasive species and planting native trees at a cost of Rs 5 crore. Additionally, waterbodies in Rajapalayam will be restored at a cost of Rs 16 crore.
Thennarasu said abandoned mines, degraded landscapes and polluted waterbodies will be reclaimed to make way for green spaces and environmental tourism at a cost of Rs 10 crore. As their first step, the government will focus on areas like the mines in Madukkarai.
A sum of Rs 24 crore has been allocated to expand environmental clubs in schools, organise nature camps, and conduct state-level competitions. Infrastructure to support green practices, including solar lighting, rainwater harvesting, composting units, and plastic-free zones, will be developed under Green Schools programme.

Mizoram Government Denies Allegations Of Shifting State Capital From Aizawl to Thenzawl
Aizawl: The Mizoram government on Monday denied the allegation that it has been trying to shift the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl in Serchhip district. In a statement, the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) government also asserted that a "clerical error" in a letter sent by the Centre to the state administration led to the misunderstanding that the capital would be shifted to Thenzawl. Thenzawl is a census town located about 93 km from Aizawl, and it falls under the Serchhip constituency from where Chief Minister Lalduhoma was elected consecutively in the 2018 and 2023 assembly polls. Mizoram's main opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), on August 1 charged the CM with "secretly" trying to shift the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl and seeking funds from the Centre to execute the plan. MNF general secretary Zodinpuia had said, "On April 24, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs sent letters to the Mizoram chief secretary and resident commissioner in Delhi under the subject 'shifting of state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl', asking them to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the matter. The state Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation department in a statement clarified that there was a "clerical error" in the letter sent to the state government by the Centre, which was mistaken for shifting the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl. The letter was about sanctioning a fund of Rs 10 crore by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for preparing the Detailed Project Report for the 'Thenzawl peace city' project, it said. On April 4, Lalduhoma said that plans were afoot to develop Thenzawl and the surrounding areas as a 'peace city' to house about 10 lakh people. Lalduhoma had said that he was optimistic about getting financial help from the Centre for the project, as he had earlier discussed the plan with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The CM had also said he discussed the plan with the 16th Finance Commission, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs approved Rs 10 crore to develop a master plan for the project.

In Punjab's Jalandhar, labourers stage protest near minister's home, demand employment, land rights
1 2 Jalandhar: Hundreds of rural and farm labourers, under a state-wide call by joint front organisations, staged a two-hour protest sit-in on Monday near the residence of Punjab minister Mohinder Bhagat in Urban Estate, Phase II here. Demonstrators, including men and women from Nawanshahr, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, and Jalandhar districts, gathered to press for a range of demands. Labour leader Kashmir Singh Ghugshor said that their demands included a guarantee of permanent employment, a monthly allowance of Rs 1,000 for women according to election promises, an increase in pension amounts, leasing one-third of panchayat land to dalit labourers at affordable rates, cancellation of the land pooling policy, provision of plots to the homeless and needy, distribution of land exceeding legal limits to landless labourers and farmers, debt waiver, and the restoration of the right to organise and struggle. Labour leaders argued that the land pooling policy being implemented by the Bhagwant Mann govt in Punjab would not only facilitate the appropriation of Punjab's fertile lands by corporate houses and lead to the displacement of farmers but would also prove disastrous for rural and farm labourers already suffering from housing shortage, unemployment, debt, and suicides. Govt has failed to offer relief to flood victims: Akhilesh
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said even as two dozen districts – including Prayagraj and Varanasi – were hit by floods, the BJP govt has failed to extend relief to people in the affected areas. "When the UP BJP can organise public meetings and rallies for the 'super VVIP', why isn't it conducting relief and rescue operations in flood hit regions of the state," Akhilesh said, adding that the situation was 'concerning' in Prayagraj and Varanasi where people were using boats to commute through lanes and bylanes in residential localities which were inundated in flood waters. The former UP CM said there was an acute shortage of food and clean drinking water for people stranded in flood-hit areas. "Sick people, particularly children, pregnant women and senior citizens, are not getting proper medicines as health services have come to a standstill. There is no power supply in localities facing floods which has only added to the crisis," Akhilesh said.
