Renting in Sharjah? SEWA will now switch on utilities automatically

What's On11 hours ago
If you're renting a new home in Sharjah, here's some good news. Starting now, there's no need to go through the hassle of activating electricity, water, and gas services yourself. Thanks to a new digital system, these utilities will be switched on automatically as soon as your tenancy contract is attested by the municipality.
Yes, that means no more separate applications, no more waiting in line, and no more back-and-forth between government departments.
This seamless new service is part of a joint initiative between the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (Sewa) and Sharjah Municipality. Once your rental contract is attested, the system kicks in automatically, sending you a text with the required deposit amount. As soon as the deposit is paid, your utilities will be activated, no further action required.
Pretty convenient, right?
The move is part of Sharjah's wider digital transformation plans, aimed at simplifying services and improving the resident experience through smart tech. What's changed?
Previously, tenants had to: Attest the rental contract at the municipality
Then separately visit SEWA to apply for services
Submit the attested lease, Emirates ID and more
And pay a deposit before utilities were activated
Now? Just attest the lease and pay the deposit. That's it.
The whole process is handled through an integrated e-link system between Sewa and the municipality, meaning no extra paperwork, no chasing documents, and no unnecessary trips. Why this matters
Beyond the obvious convenience, this is also a win for operational efficiency. It speeds up move-ins, reduces admin for landlords, and improves customer satisfaction, key goals in the UAE's push toward streamlined digital services.
'This is not just a technical upgrade,' added Al Askar. 'It's about transforming the user journey, from tenancy contract to moving in, without extra steps.'
So whether you're a new tenant or relocating within the emirate, Sharjah is now making the whole process smoother and a little less stressful.

Contract verification for OFWs in the UAE can now be done fully online

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the UAE can verify their employment contracts fully online starting today, July 7. This comes as the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) rolls out the pilot implementation of its optional online contract verification service, allowing workers to complete the process without needing to visit the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in person. Spearheaded by MWO-Dubai, the new system enables OFWs to submit their signed employment contracts through an online platform for verification — a requirement that ensures their job offers comply with Philippine labor standards and provides legal protection while working abroad. 'This online contract verification service is a game-changer for our kababayans in the UAE,' said Atty. John Rio A. Bautista, Labor Attaché of MWO Dubai. 'It's about giving OFWs confidence and convenience—ensuring their vital documents are verified quickly and securely, from wherever they are.' Uploading documents The online contract verification portal can be accessed at where OFWs can upload the required documents namely their Philippine passport, Emirates ID, and signed employment contract. Optional documents include payslip or salary certificate, bank certificate, and company details. When uploading documents, the MWO reminds applicants to use a scanner or clear camera shot to avoid shadows and glare. The standard processing time for online contract verification is three working days, provided all required documents are submitted and fees are paid. Who can apply? In a separate advisory issued by MWO-Dubai, the 30-day pilot will cover land-based OFWs with valid UAE visas or Emirates IDs issued in Dubai, Ajman, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, and Umm Al Quwain. The platform will accept up to 200 applications daily, from Monday to Friday, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and closing at 11:59 p.m. or once the daily cap is reached. However, the DMW clarified that online verification is currently an optional service, with manual processing still available. For OFWs with confirmed flights, onsite verification at MWO-Dubai will remain open one working day before departure. Once contracts are verified, workers may proceed separately to apply for their Overseas Employment Certificates (OECs) through the DMW portal. 'This new service directly addresses the critical need for streamlined, accessible, and robust verification processes, ensuring greater transparency and safeguarding OFWs against fraudulent practices,' the DMW said in a press release. The digital system was developed by the DMW as part of the Philippine government's broader digitalization efforts, in partnership with DataFlow Group.

Sharjah: Automatic electricity, water, gas connection for tenants after registration

Sharjah residents no longer need to file separate applications to activate electricity, water or gas services after registering a rental contract. A new joint initiative by Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (Sewa) and Sharjah Municipality enables direct activation of utility services once the lease is attested. This eliminates the need for additional paperwork or visits to multiple departments. Once the municipality attests the lease, tenants will automatically receive a text message with the required deposit amount. As soon as the deposit money is paid, Sewa services will be activated without the need for a separate request. The service, launched under the emirate's digital transformation plans, uses an integrated e-link system between the two entities. "This marks a shift in how services are delivered," said Dr Hussein Al Askar, Director of Customer Service at Sewa. "We had previously automated the account closure process after a clearance certificate was issued by the municipality. Now, we're doing the same at the start of the tenancy." What tenants don't have to do Previously, tenants in Sharjah had to first attest their tenancy contract at the municipality, then visit or apply separately at the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (Sewa) to request service activation. This process involved submitting documents such as the attested contract and Emirates ID and paying a security deposit before utilities could be connected, often requiring coordination with multiple departments and taking several days. The initiative aligns with the UAE's broader goals to reduce bureaucracy and enhance customer satisfaction through simplified, technology-enabled services. Al Askar added that the electronic integration supports Sharjah's goal of offering streamlined, smart services and reflects SEWA's commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents. "This is not just a technical improvement; it's about enhancing the user journey—from contract attestation to utility connection, all without additional steps," he said. Sewa said the initiative will help improve operational efficiency while saving time for both tenants and landlords.
