‘Bad Boys for Life' Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to Make Movie About Tragic True Story of Black Student's Death in Fraternity Hazing (EXCLUSIVE)
'Bad Boys for Life' filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are set to direct a film about the tragic true story of Sanda Dia, a Black student who died in 2018 after enduring a violent fraternity hazing ritual at an elite university in Belgium.
Brussels-based production company Komoko, founded by Nabil Ben Yadir and Marc Goyens, is producing the film.

Penned by El Arbi and Fallah, the script was inspired by the books penned by Dia's father, Ousmane (Papis) Dia, 'ze hebben mijn zoon vermoord' ('They Killed My Son'), and 'De doop die leidde tot de dood' ('The Baptism That Led to Death') by journalist Pieter Huyberechts.
Dia was 20 years old when he died in the hazing ritual at the Catholic University of Leuven, where he was forced by members of an elite – and mostly white — fraternity to swallow a live goldfish, and drink large amount of fish oil and alcohol during a brutal initiation ritual. Dia collapsed and died in a hospital two days later after suffering
News Dia's death sparked uproar in Belgium and call for justice as the 18 members of the fraternity who were involved in the hazing didn't receive a prison sentence and were instead sentenced between 200 and 300 hours of community service, and fined about $430 each.
'Like everyone else, we were in shock of what happened to Sanda during those two days,' said El Arbi and Fallah on the project. 'When we got in touch with his father, Papis Dia, we were impressed by his courage and his willpower to fight for justice. This film is a love letter from him to Sanda. We recognize ourselves in Sanda and our parents in Papis,' said the directors.
The untitled project marks a milestone for Komoko which was 'founded with a mission to support bold and visionary filmmakers,' said the company. The outfit recently produced 'Têtes Brûlées' by Maja-Ajmia Yde Zellama, which premiered at the Berlinale Generation section earlier this week.
The company's ambitious slate includes the feature debut of celebrated choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The producers are meeting potential partners for the untitled project at the Berlinale.
El Arbi and Fallah recently directed 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' and 'Gangstas,' the coming-of-age tale of Jamal 'Juice Sinclair' and his rise to fame.

Gabby Thomas calls out Grand Slam Track heckler who bragged about winning bets, with league investigating
U.S. sprinter Gabby Thomas has called out a man who heckled her and bragged about his betting results throughout a Grand Slam Track event this weekend. Thomas, who won three gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, participated in two sprinting events at the Grand Slam Track meet in Philadelphia as part of the Michael Johnson-founded track league's inaugural season. Thomas finished in second in the 200-meter sprint and fourth in the 100-meter. Advertisement After Thomas posted a recap of the weekend on X, the heckler, who uses the username "Mr 100K a day" on X, commented on the post, bragging that his taunts toward Thomas made her lose the race and included screenshots of his successful parlay bets on FanDuel Sportsbook. "I made Gabby lose by heckling her. And it made my parlay win," he wrote in the comment, with a video of him harassing Thomas as she lined up for one of the events. Soon after that comment was posted, Thomas quickly pointed out the man's behavior. "This grown man followed me around the track as I took pictures and signed autographs for fans (mostly children) shouting personal insults," Thomas said in a post on X, in response to the user's comment. "Anybody who enables him online is gross." Advertisement In response to a comment on her post, Thomas commented that she hadn't planned on calling the heckler out but changed her mind "since he's bragging." Grand Slam Track told Front Office Sports that it is investigating the user. "Grand Slam Track is conducting a full investigation into the reprehensible behavior captured on video," the league told Front Office Sports in a statement. "We are working to identify the individual involved and will take appropriate action as necessary. We will implement additional safeguards to help prevent incidents like this in the future. Let us be clear, despicable behavior like this will not be tolerated." The user's screenshots indicated that he had won more than $2,000 in total off two parlays, where he bet on Melissa Jefferson-Wooden to win the 100m. In the video, the man could be heard calling Thomas a "choke job" and referenced the fact that Thomas, who is Black, was engaged to a white man, while Jefferson-Wooden, who is also Black, had married a Black man earlier this year. Advertisement In addition to the comment under Thomas' post, the user posted the same video and screenshots in a separate post hours earlier, thanking Jefferson-Wooden for helping him win his bet. "I want to thank mellissa jefferson (sic) for beating the crap out of gabby thomas at Grand Slam Track and getting me rich!!!!" he wrote. The user tagged Thomas, Jefferson-Wooden and Grand Slam Track in the post. In another post from Sunday, the user posted an interaction between him and Thomas where the sprinter asked "What are you doing here?" and jokingly called him a "heckler." The user captioned the video with a similar message. "Nice to heckle gabby thomas today and make her lose," he said, once again tagging both Thomas and Grand Slam Track. "It was my pleasure." Advertisement Thomas noted in a comment on X that she had a line when it came to the user's behavior. "I think heckling is tolerable… but following me around the stadium is weird in my opinion," she said. The user, in a direct message with USA Today on X, disputed Thomas' claim that he was following her around the stadium. The user also gave the outlet a fake name when asked for his name and where he lived, and said that he lives in Puerto Rico.

Paramount adds three new board members amid Trump troubles and FCC review
With its sale to Skydance Media still beyond its reach, Paramount Global has nominated three new directors to bolster its small board, which has been racked with drama and churn since early last year. The debt-laden New York-based company currently has only five board members, including controlling shareholder Shari Redstone, who serves as chairwoman. The Redstone family holds nearly 77% of Paramount's voting shares, giving the heiress tremendous sway. In a proxy filing Monday, Paramount asked shareholders to elect seven directors at its July 2 annual meeting. The slate includes Redstone and three recruits: attorney Mary Boies (a member of the firm led by her husband David Boies); Silicon Valley venture capital executive Charles E. Ryan ; and former Massachusetts trial court judge Roanne Sragow Licht. In addition to Redstone, three longtime board members — Linda M. Griego, Susan Schuman and Barbara M. Byrne — will stand for reelection. Board member Judith A. McHale has decided to step down. The company took a $6-billion write-down on its cable television networks business, in yet another sign that Hollywood is reckoning with the ongoing deterioration of the traditional television business. Leading independent director Charles Phillips left the board in October. His exit came six months after three other directors — Rob Klieger, Nicole Seligman and Dawn Ostroff — abruptly departed as the panel was struggling over terms of Redstone's planned Paramount sale. In late October, President Trump filed a lawsuit in Texas over his dismay with edits of a "60 Minutes" interview of then-Vice President Kamala Harris in the closing weeks of the election. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, opened an inquiry to determine whether the edits rose to the level of news distortion. Trump doubled the amount of damages he was seeking to $20 billion. In a court filing last week, Trump's lawyers asserted the president suffered "mental anguish" due to the "60 Minutes" broadcast. Redstone's desire to settle Trump's suit over the "60 Minutes" edits has carved deep divides within the company. 1st Amendment experts have called Trump's lawsuit frivolous; CBS News executives and other journalists believe it is a shakedown to exploit the vulnerable company that is desperate to have the FCC approve the sale to Skydance. The ruckus over the edits contributed to the departure of two top CBS News executives. Wendy McMahon, the president of CBS News and Stations, stepped down under pressure last month. In April, "60 Minutes" executive producer Bill Owens departed. Redstone has expressed her dissatisfaction with CBS News' coverage of the Israel-Hamas war. Last month, three Democrat U.S. senators warned Redstone that the company could face allegations of bribery if they write a big check to mollify Trump in an effort to facilitate the FCC's review of the Skydance takeover. The Wall Street Journal has reported that Paramount offered Trump $15 million to make the lawsuit go away, but he declined. It's been nearly 11 months since Paramount agreed to be sold to Skydance in an $8-billion deal that would inject $1.5 billion in capital into Paramount's battered balance sheet. Paramount has not revised its guidance on when it expects the deal to close — but the contractual deadline is early October. As part of its proxy statement, the company again detailed the compensation packages — totaling $148 million to the top three executives and ousted Chief Executive Bob Bakish, who received compensation valued at $87 million. Co-CEO George Cheeks was paid $22.2 million. His counterparts Brian Robbins and Chris McCarthy were paid $19.6 million and $19.5 million, respectively, according to the filing.
