JOHOR BARU: Police seized beer and liquor worth more than RM80,000 in an operation at Taman Mount Austin here, which led to the arrest of a local man.
Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the arrest and seizure dismantled the storage and distribution of untaxed alcoholic beverages here.
'Following cooperation with Bukit Aman and based on intelligence and public information, we raided a double-storey terrace house at about 10.30am on May 7.
'The raid led to the arrest of a 36-year-old trader at the scene. Checks at the premises and two multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs) found 185 cartons of beer as well as 35 boxes of beer and liquor bottles,' he said during the press conference at the district police headquarters here yesterday.
He added that the total value of the seized contraband, together with the two MPVs, was estimated to be more than RM316,000.
'Further checks revealed that the vehicles had been fitted with fake number plates to hide the illegal activity from authorities.
'The suspect owns one of the MPVs, while he has been renting the other vehicle together with the house, which he used to store the contraband items.'
ACP Raub said the man had been running the operation alone for the past six months, adding that he has no prior record and tested negative for drugs.
He said the initial investigation found that the suspect had been buying the alcohol at the Forest City duty-free zone before selling it at market price to businesses and individuals here.
He added that samples have been taken from the seized beers and liquor before sending them to the Chemistry Department and Customs Department for further analysis and evaluation.
ACP Raub said the suspect has been remanded to help with investigations under Section 135(1)(D) of the Customs Act 1967 and Section 108(3)(F) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
He urged the public to continue providing information on any criminal activities by contacting the Johor Baru South police hotline at 07-218 2323.

Kijal assemblyman Razali ordered to enter defence on sedition charge

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here on Thursday (June 12) ordered Kijal assemblyman Datuk Razali Idris ( pic ) to enter his defence on a charge of making a speech of seditious nature, alleging government influence over the judiciary, at the launch of the Kemaman by-election machinery two years ago. Judge Norma Ismail made the order after finding that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a prima facie case against Razali, 58, who is also the former Bersatu information chief, at the end of the prosecution's case. "After examining the evidence and submissions of both parties, the court found that the prosecution had succeeded in establishing a prima facie case. "Therefore, the accused is called to defend himself on this charge," said the judge, who then set the trial date for four days on Sept 26 and 30 and Oct 2 and 3. The proceedings were attended by deputy public prosecutors Datuk Badiuszaman Ahmad and Muhammad Amir Hannif Ahijman, and lawyer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud, representing Razali, who is also the Terengganu Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee chairman. On Nov 24, 2023, Razali pleaded not guilty to making a speech of a seditious nature between 9.30pm and 11.30pm on Nov 10 of the same year at the launch of the Kemaman by-election machinery at Padang Astaka Chukai, Kemaman in Terengganu.
