Rs 50,000 rent in India but Rs 1.6 lakh in US: Why Delhi researcher is calling out the NRI salary flex

Economic Times11-06-2025
Shubham Chakraborty, a researcher based in Delhi, has started a viral debate on social media on NRIs flexing their salaries— questioning how Indian professionals often compare international paychecks without factoring in key differences like cost of living and purchasing power.
"Next time your cousin/friend who has settled in the US says he makes Rs 80 Lakhs a year, tell them you only need Rs 23 Lakhs to match their lifestyle in India. This is how Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) works," said Chakraborty in a post on LinkedIn.

Next time your cousin/friend who has settled in the US says he makes Rs 80 Lakhs a year, tell them you only need Rs 23 Lakhs to match their lifestyle in India. This is how Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) works.PPP is a way to compare the value of money between different countries. It shows how much money you'd need in one country to buy the same things as in another country. Many people don't think about PPP when considering job offers or moving to another country. But it can be helpful. For example, if you have two job offers - one for 30 Lakhs rupees in India and another for 80 Lakhs rupees in the US - PPP can help you compare them fairly. However, PPP isn't the only thing to consider. Developed countries often have better public services, technology, and opportunities. They may also offer better social security.

So, while PPP is useful, it's just one of many factors to consider when making decisions about jobs or moving abroad.
India's Purchasing Power Parity:
NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman Bery said that the size of the Indian economy in the purchasing power parity (PPP) term is already USD 15 trillion, which is more than half the size of the US economy. The purchasing power parity (PPP) is the amount of currency units required to purchase a basket of goods and services that can be purchased with one unit of the reference economy's currency.
"There has been a lot in the newspapers about our being the fourth largest economy. Those are all measured at market prices, but the real way of measuring productivity is purchasing power parity. "And while we are USD 4 trillion GDP at market prices, at PPP term, we are USD 15 trillion economy," Bery said while addressing the Annual Business Summit 2025 of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He said that economists tend to measure labour productivity at purchasing power parity as PPP measures the real size of the economy of countries against the size of the US economy.

Bank ordered to pay over Rs 1 crore to company that lost the amount in 2023 SIM swap fraud; telecom major also penalised

An Ahmedabad-based company, which deals in ball bearings and had lost Rs 1.2 crore to cybercriminals in a SIM swap fraud in March 2023, has received compensation to the tune of Rs 1.2 crore from penalties imposed on a leading bank and a major telecom company that were held liable by the Adjudication Officer of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of Gujarat. Passed on July 31, the order by Mona Khandhar, the Principal Secretary of the DST and the Adjudication Officer under the Information Technology Act, ordered ICICI Bank to pay Rs 10 lakh as penalty and Rs 1.05 crore as compensation to Collective Trade Links Private Limited. Further, Vodafone Idea Limited was ordered to pay Rs 5 lakh as penalty to the complainant. Both the companies have been asked to submit the amount within 6 weeks from the date of the order. Both companies were also directed to implement internal vulnerability checks within three months. ICICI Bank was further directed to upgrade its ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) platforms within six months. According to the original case filed at the Cybercrime Police station in Ahmedabad, the firm had lost a total of Rs 1,19,37,000 on March 12, 2023, in a series of 22 transactions. This happened on a Sunday, a non-working day, and when the Director, Prakash I Mehta, was not even in India but in Vietnam. The illegal transactions took place after cybercriminals sent an email to the telecom company asking for a change in the SIM card. This was authorised to approve financial transactions of the complainant firm. The fraudsters had also submitted fake documents to enable the transaction. The next day, the accountants at the firm discovered the theft and reported it to the police. Subsequently, the company's director approached the Adjudication Officer of the DST to seek compensation from the telecom company and the bank, and filed a civil complaint under sections 43 and 43-A of the Information Technology Act, which deal with civil liability for criminal action against unauthorised accesses, data theft and damage to computers systems. Hearings were held on five dates in 2024 and in January 2025. The order said, 'An investigation has revealed that Prashanta Datta, a Vodafone store manager in West Bengal, was allegedly complicit in the issuance of blank SIM cards, bypassing established verification protocols. One such SIM card was subsequently exploited in the commission of the fraud against the complainant.' Further, regarding the bank, the order stated, 'Negligence was exhibited by ICICI Bank in failing to exercise due diligence while adding new beneficiaries and approving transactions, thereby violating established banking norms and protocols. The bank's failure to implement proper verification procedures allowed for the approval of unauthorised high-value transactions which exceeded the standard transaction limits and by-passed necessary security checks. This breach of due negligence directly resulted in the financial loss of Rs 1,19,37,000 to the complainant.'

Sam Altman predicts India to be OpenAI's largest market amid ChatGPT-5 release

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has predicted that India could become the artificial intelligence (AI) giant's largest market worldwide. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he was excited to visit India in September and that his company was especially focused on bringing its product to the country.(AFP File) Altman's statement came as OpenAI launched its next-generation model, ChatGPT-5. India is currently the company's second-largest market behind the United States. The CEO called the Indians 'remarkable' in their use of AI. "India is our second-largest market in the world after the US, and it may well become our largest market. It's incredibly fast-growing, but what users are doing with AI, what citizens of India are doing with AI, is really quite remarkable,' Altman said during a media briefing. The OpenAI CEO said he was excited to visit India in September and that his company was especially focused on bringing its product to the country. "We're especially focused on bringing products to India, working with local partners to make AI work great for India and make it more affordable for people across the country. We've been paying a lot of attention here given the rate of growth, and I am excited to come for a visit in September," he said. OpenAI launches ChatGPT-5 OpenAI on Thursday announced the launch of GPT-5, describing it as its 'best model yet for coding and agentic tasks". "We're releasing GPT-5 in three sizes in the API -- gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano -- to give developers more flexibility to trade off performance, cost, and latency. While GPT-5 in ChatGPT is a system of reasoning, non-reasoning, and router models, GPT-5 in the API platform is the reasoning model that powers maximum performance in ChatGPT. Notably, GPT-5 with minimal reasoning is a different model from the non-reasoning model in ChatGPT, and is better tuned for developers. The non-reasoning model used in ChatGPT is available as gpt-5-chat-latest," OpenAI said in a blog post. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, added that the new model significantly improves understanding across more than 12 Indian languages. "GPT-5 significantly improves multilingual understanding across over 12 Indian languages, including regional languages. So that's really exciting because as Sam mentioned, India is a priority market for us," Turley said. The rollout of GPT-5 began on August 7 for free, Plus, and Pro users, with Enterprise and Education users gaining access a week later.
