Month After Maharashtra Minister's Rapido Sting Operation, Company Becomes Sponsor For Son's Event

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik ordered a crackdown against Rapido in July over 'illegal service'.
Rapido will be sponsoring this year's Pro-Govinda League, a Dahi Handi competition in Mumbai organised by the son of Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. The sponsorship comes just a month after Sarnaik publicly announced action against the bike taxi aggregator for operating in the city 'without permission".
The incident dates back to July 2, when Sarnaik booked a ride using a random name to verify public complaints about unauthorised bike taxi services. Sarnaik personally caught Rapido operating illegally and led a government crackdown on the company.
'I myself used this illegal service despite the government not giving it the nod. Such companies operating without state sanction will be taken strictly to task," he had said.
Following this, his Transport Department launched raids, seizing 78 Rapido bike taxis operating without permission.
'The minister caught the Rapido bike. He got publicity. And then he rapidly changed his position and brokered a sponsorship. It just proves that this government works for itself and not for the public. I want to ask whether this is not a misuse of the ministerial post?" he said.

Devotees in Rajasthan throng temples on Janmashtami

Agency: PTI Jaipur, Aug 16 (PTI) Lakhs of devotees thronged temples across Rajasthan on Saturday to celebrate Janmashtami, with Jaipur's historic Govind Devji temple witnessing a massive footfall since the early hours of the day, officials said. Devotees began queuing up at the Govind Devji temple around 3 am for Mangal darshan, which opened at 4.30 am. Lines of devotees extended well beyond the temple premises, and authorities said lakhs are expected to offer prayers throughout the day. Similar rush was witnessed at other prominent temples including Gopinathji, ISKCON and Akshaya Patra temples in Jaipur. Police have strengthened security arrangements with the use of technology-driven surveillance. CCTV cameras installed at key temples are being used to monitor suspicious elements, Jaipur Police Commissioner Biju George Joseph said. 'Apart from advanced CCTV cameras installed at prominent places, policemen in civil dress have been deployed to ensure safe environment for devotees," the officer added. Temples across the city and other districts have been adorned with flowers and lighting for the festivities, which will culminate with midnight rituals marking the birth of Lord Krishna. Shocking Scenes As Man In Wheelchair Ejected For Racially Abusing Antoine Semenyo During Liverpool Vs Bournemouth

Last Updated: Holders Liverpool made a winning start to their Premier League campaign on Saturday, but the performance was marred by a supporter being ejected for racially abusing a player. Allegation of racism marred the opening day clash between Premier League defending champions Liverpool and Bournemouth on Friday. Just after the half-an-hour mark, Bournemouth forward Antonie Semenyo approached the referee and claimed to have been racially abused by a fan. Following Semenyo's complaint, the match was halted briefly as referee Anthony Taylor briefed both the managers – Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola – about the incident. A clip of Semenyo exchanging words with a wheelchair-bound man at Anfield while preparing for a throw-in is doing the rounds on social media. 'I am told by the Match Centre, the Premier League Match Centre, that Antoine Semenyo was subject to a racist comment from the crowd," commentator Peter Drury informed viewers while on air on Sky Sports. 'Of which, of course, nobody on either side, or indeed anywhere, is approving. So, sympathy from Liverpool, beyond which, at this stage, nothing to report. What I can tell you, also, is that it was Semenyo himself who brought the referee's attention to it." 'Liverpool Football Club is aware of an allegation of racist abuse made during our Premier League game against AFC Bournemouth. We condemn racism and discrimination in all forms, it has no place in society or football. The club is unable to comment further as tonight's alleged incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation, which we will support fully," read the statement. Liverpool Manager Furious Liverpool manager Slot was angered at the allegation and praised Antoine for maintaining his composure while scoring two goals later on to pull Bournemouth on level terms with their hosts. 'It is unacceptable in any stadium, especially Anfield. It shouldn't happen but unfortunately we definitely have to talk about it. It should be about Diogo and how the tributes were. I spoke to Antoine after the game and said the club will do everything we can to find the person responsible. Big credit to him if something happens to him and he can perform like this. He is not only a great player but very strong mentally. But it is unacceptable," Slot said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mumbai businessman loses Rs 5.24 cr in investment scam; four held

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Mumbai, Aug 16 (PTI) Four cyber fraudsters have been arrested for allegedly duping a businessman from Mumbai of Rs 5.24 crore by posing as executives of a Dubai-based investment company, police said on Saturday. The fraud came to light after the accused themselves invited the victim to Dubai, where he found that the company does not exist, an official said. A probe has revealed that the accused, who were recently apprehended from different parts of the country, had used the same modus operandi to cheat people of more than Rs 65 crore in Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Kerala, an official said. Three of the accused have been identified as R. Menon (35), Manikandan (32) and H. Pandi, he said. The official said that in October last year, a 65-year-old businessman from the western suburbs received a call from one of the accused, who posed as an employee of a Dubai-based investment company. The caller offered him attractive returns on investment in the company, he said. As the businessman showed interest in investing, the caller introduced him to the firm's director, who offered him 10 per cent returns per month and shares of the same value of the company, the official said. He said that the complainant then deposited money in November and noticed that the bank account used for the transaction was a personal account. On inquiry, the firm's director claimed that the account belonged to an employee and that the sum would be transferred to the company, the official said. In March, the accused invited the complainant for a visit to Dubai, where he found that the firm, in which he had invested Rs 5.24 crore over four months, did not exist. The official said when the businessman tried to contact the firm's owner, he was told that the latter was in the US, and when he demanded the return of his investment, the accused allegedly sent him fake cheques, demand drafts and other documents.
