Gaurav Gogoi visits Kamakhya temple before assuming charge
Guwahati, June 3 (UNI) Newly appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Gaurav Gogoi visited the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati on Tuesday and sought the blessings of the Goddess.
Gogoi, who is a Lok Sabha MP from Kaliabar Lok Sabha Constituency in Assam and deputy leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, reached the Congress headquarters Rajib Bhavan in the city after visiting the temple and formally took charge as APCC president from outgoing chief Bhupen Borah.
'We have sought the blessings of Maa Kamakhya and we wish the best to all the people of Assam. We wish for peace, prosperity and harmony. We wish that all of us can live together in unity,' Gogoi told media after visiting the temple.
Gogoi was given a red carpet welcome at the Rajib Bhavan with thousands of party supporters thronging the Congress headquarters on Tuesday morning. A colourful cultural procession awaited Gogoi at the Rajiv Bhavan in the city on Tuesday. People were seen rushing in to garland him with traditional Gamochas.
Gogoi, who is a three-time Lok Sabha MP, arrived in Assam on May 31 and started his work for the new assignment from Titabar constituency, held by his father and former Assam Chief Minister Late Tarun Gogoi.
'My father began his journey of public service from Jorhat. The people here stood by him and have stood by me ever since. Today, I begin my first visit to Assam as the newly appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee from Jorhat, a place deeply tied to both his legacy and my own path in public life.
"Grateful for the outpouring of love and support from the people of Assam,' Gogoi said recently on his social media handle.
Gaurav arrived in Guwahati on Monday and visited the houses of the victims of the recent landslides.

Blood donation camp held for thalassemia-affected children at Khammam MP's camp office
Cadres of the Congress party organised a host of programmes, including a blood donation camp, and a bike rally, in Khammam, to mark the completion of Congress leader Ramasahayam Raghuram Reddy's one year as MP of Khammam Lok Sabha constituency. His questions pertained to crucial topics of public interest mainly concerning the imperative need for setting up a Greenfield airport at Kothagudem, change of alignment of Dornakal-Miryalguda new railway line, expansion and upgradation of National Highways among other vital development projects, they said. The party leaders further added that Mr Reddy ensured succour to people affected by the unprecedented floods in Munneru in 2024, distributed CM Relief Fund cheques to 1,147 needy persons and allocated MPLADS funds worth ₹145 crore for various development works.

Known for her sharp attacks on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ms. Moitra found herself embroiled in a controversy in 2023 following allegations of taking 'cash' and 'gifts' for asking questions in Lok Sabha. The inquiry against her was undertaken by the Lok Sabha based on a complaint by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey who cited a letter he received from advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai, Ms. Moitra's former partner. Dubey said the lawyer has shared 'irrefutable' evidence of bribes exchanged between the TMC MP and Darshan Hiranandani, a well-known business tycoon, to ask questions in Parliament in exchange for 'cash' and 'gifts'. Ms. Moitra denied the allegations of accepting any bribe, though she admitted she shared the credentials of her Lok Sabha login with Hiranandani's staff. She was expelled from the Lok Sabha in December 2023 in the 'bribe-for-query' case. However, won the Lok Sabha polls again in 2024 from the same seat with a margin of over 56,000 votes.

India has outperformed global growth average despite challenges: Om Birla
Brasilia/New Delhi, June 5 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday said despite the global uncertainties and domestic challenges, India has consistently outperformed the global growth average. 'Rising from the 10th largest economy in 2014 to the 4th largest today is a testament to India's robust policies and the strength of its people,' Birla said while addressing the 2nd Working Session of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum here on the theme 'BRICS Parliamentary Action in Search of New Paths for Economic Development', an official statement said. He said that from 2014-15 to 2024-25, India's GDP has grown at an average rate of over 7 percent, making it the fastest-growing major economy in the world. Birla noted that India is not only the world's largest and most vibrant democracy but also a nation with stable governance, strong constitutional institutions, the rule of law, a transparent and accountable tax system, and decisive leadership that has earned the trust of global investors. The Lok Sabha Speaker said that India supports a fair and rule-based global trading system—one that adequately addresses the needs and aspirations of the Global South. 'India views the BRICS Parliamentary Forum as a vital platform—where through shared efforts and dialogue, we can redefine the contours of economic development. This forum further reinforces our commitment to mutual cooperation, solidarity, and the welfare of our citizens,' the Speaker added. Moreover, during his bilateral meeting with President of the Federal Senate of Brazil, Davi Alcolumbre, Birla said that terrorism is the biggest threat to global peace and stability. While referring to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 innocent civilians were brutally killed, Birla said, 'Pakistan has failed to take concrete action against the terrorist infrastructure operating from its territory; India exercised its right to respond, to prevent such cross-border attacks in the future, and to defend itself.' On Operation Sindoor, Birla said that these steps were 'measured, non-provocative, proportionate, and responsible'. Their sole objective was to destroy terrorist infrastructure and neutralise the capabilities of terrorists. 'Today's India is firmly committed to a policy of zero tolerance towards all forms of terrorism and gives a strong response to every terrorist attack,' he added. On the sidelines of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum, the Lok Sabha Speaker also held a bilateral meeting with the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil Hugo Motta. Birla observed that India and Brazil are natural partners. Both countries have, from time to time, provided direction and momentum to their bilateral relations through high-level dialogues. He added, 'There is extensive collaboration between the two countries in areas such as defence, technology, space, energy, and culture. The special session organised by the Brazilian Congress in 2022 on the occasion of 75 years of India's independence is a testament to our special friendship.'
