MOVIE REVIEW: We see if we should keep our distance from horror 'The Woman in the Yard'

Daily Record28-04-2025

Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra has a varied back catalogue that includes horror (the House of Wax remake, Orphan ). He turns to the dark side once again for Blumhouse's latest which follows Romana (Danielle Deadwyler) and her kids Taylor (Peyton Jackson) and Annie (Estella Kahiha) as they encounter a mysterious Woman (Okwui Okpokwasili) who repeatedly appears sitting in their front yard. It's a small cast in a self-contained farmhouse location so a lot rides on the quality of the acting and storytelling. The former is strong; Deadwyler unleashes a torrent of emotions - and says so much via her expressive eyes - and Jackson and Kahiha comfortably pass for siblings rocked by a family tragedy and frightened by the titular antagonist's arrival. Often bathed in darkness, and for the most part covered in a black cloak, Collet-Serra shoots Okpokwasili from every angle and distance while the actress unsettles using a distorted voice and unclear intentions. When she eventually gets out of her chair, her wobbly movements and simple decaying make-up, accompanied by a throbbing musical score, add to Okpokwasili's imposing presence. Collet-Serra delivers tilted camera work and makes the most of sunlight and shadow to support the off-kilter environment. However, sadly, that's where the positives end. The focus on grief and loss is admirable but ensures this is a tough watch. The constant sniping between Romana and Taylor wears you down and the lines between reality and fantasy blur so much it's not abundantly clear what exactly is going on during the final third. As I've said before, the biggest crime a horror flick can commit is not being scary and while The Woman in the Yard tries its best to be, it fails. A couple of jump scares and the Woman's appearance aside, this is pure family drama that is both bleak and instantly forgettable. It probably would have worked better as a short film - and at least that way poor Okpokwasili wouldn't have had to spend so long sitting in that chair. ● Pop me an email at ian.bunting@reachplc.com and I will pass on any movie or TV show recommendations you have to your fellow readers. ● The Woman in the Yard is showing in cinemas now. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Arsenal star taken aback by team-mate's 'zero f**** given' act before £50m move

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has lifted the lid on how an audacious move by one of his team-mates left him surprised before they sealed a big money transfer move abroad Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has backed his Spain team-mate Dean Huijsen to be a big success at Real Madrid. The defender's departure from Bournemouth was confirmed last month after the La Liga side met his £50million release clause. Huijsen joined the Cherries from Juventus last summer and quickly made his name as one of the Premier League 's best defenders. The 20-year-old attracted interest from the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal as the season drew to a close. ‌ However, he ultimately chose to join Los Blancos on a five-year deal and could make his debut during this summer's Club World Cup tournament. Huijsen earned his first cap for the Spanish national team in a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in March. ‌ One moment in particular caught Raya's eye from the bench during that game as the centre-back attempted an audacious long-range effort at goal. And the Gunners' shot-stopper told former Manchester United and Wrexham keeper Ben Foster that Huijsen's confidence is a good sign that he will succeed in Madrid. Speaking on the Fozcast podcast, Raya said: "He's good to go. You know why? Can I swear here? He has zero f***s given. That's how you interpret him, in a good way. He made his debut for Spain back in March and what 19-year-old centre-back has a shot from 30 yards out on his weak foot? "I swear, he just had a shot from 30 yards out on his left foot on his debut. I don't know how young players do this stuff so naturally nowadays. When I was 17 or 18 and training with the first team, you were so quiet and not doing anything." Huijsen recently revealed that he initially planned to spend two years at Bournemouth but things moved "very quickly". He also opened up about how he wants to emulate the career of Madrid legend Sergio Ramos. He told AS: "I may be [the happiest man in the world ], really, although my father is probably even happier. My plan was to spend two years at Bournemouth, grow, and then figure out what to do next. But things have moved very quickly, faster than I expected. ‌ "I try and aspire to be like Sergio Ramos, he's my idol. For me, he's very complete, he had everything. In terms of leadership, goalscoring, personality, character." Huijsen said he's already spoken to Real's new coach Xabi Alonso, who took over from Carlo Ancelotti after Los Blancos finished their season without a major trophy. "We've talked a bit about the team and what he has in mind, and about the project," he said. "Of course, we want to win things again, and I'm sure we will... I don't think it's sunk in yet. But I'm here at Madrid, and I'll try to do my best." He added: "I want to play with the best. [Kylian] Mbappé, Vinícius [Júnior], Rodrygo, and Jude Bellingham, all those in attack - they're some of the best there is." 'I played with Lionel Messi at Barcelona - but he wasn't my best teammate'

Bojan Krkic played with some of the best players in the world during his time at Barcelona in the early 2000s and he believes Ronaldinho was the best of the bunch, despite also sharing a dressing room with Lionel Messi Former Barcelona prodigy Bojan Krkic has snubbed Lionel Messi by claiming Ronaldinho was the best player he played with at the club. The ex-forward started his career with the Catalan side and was earmarked as one of football's most exciting prospects when he came through in 2007. Bojan would score 12 times in his debut season and ended up playing 163 times for the club before being sold to Roma in 2011. The Spanish star struggled to deliver on his huge promise, however and went on to play for Stoke City in 2014. ‌ He stayed with the Potters for five season and even played for them in the Championship as he rounded off his career with Montreal Impact in the MLS and Vissel Kobe in Japan. ‌ Bojan retired in 2022 and has since returned to Barcelona as the club's football coordinator for their La Masia academy - guiding the next generation of youngsters who will attempt to follow in his own footsteps. Bojan has spoken out about his time at the club, which occurred during an incredible period under Pep Guardiola that saw them conquer all before them, with superstars like Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and indeed Messi all playing alongside him. But he admitted it was Ronaldinho who stood out above them all. While acknowledging Messi's own brilliance, he said the Brazilian legend "had it all" and insisted "the whole team trusted him" when he had the ball at his feet. "The best player I played with was probably Ronaldinho," he told Portuguese outlet A Bola. "I know it's difficult, and almost unfair, to single out anyone, given that I shared the pitch with Messi, who played at the highest level for years. However, Ronaldinho, in my opinion, had it all. "He was an incredible playmaker. Whenever he had the ball – whether during the game or when he was preparing to take a penalty – the whole team trusted him. He really was a true leader. ‌ Ronaldinho dazzled fans for years with his incredible skills which saw him named Ballon d'Or winner in 2005. He joined Barcelona in 2003 and went on to score 94 times in 207 appearances, winning La Liga twice and the Champions League. Bojan was only able to play with Ronaldinho for one full season in 2007-08 before the Brazil star joined AC Milan at the end of the season. He played with Messi for four seasons before joining Roma in 2011-12, with the Argentine going on to become a club legend with an incredible 672 goals in 778 games. Bojan has now been able to cast his eye over the next batch of talent at Barcelona and believes Lamine Yamal is currently the best player in the world after dazzling at the Nou Camp aged just 17. He said: "There are many great players, but I would say that Barcelona's young star Lamine Yamal is the number one at the moment. He shows undeniable potential and quality – without hesitation, I can say that he is the best player at the moment, and at the best club."
