Richard Osman names one country that is 'joy' to visit for unexpected reason

Daily Mirror11 hours ago
Richard Osman has become a household name in the UK, but his success across the pond has meant he can move around without being stopped by fans of his work
Richard Osman has revealed one nation that proves a "joy to visit" for a rather surprising reason. The 54-year-old has established himself as a familiar face across Britain through his roles on television programmes including Pointless and Richard Osman's House of Games.

However, it's his literary career that has catapulted Richard to global stardom. His The Thursday Murder Club book series has proved a smash hit on either side of the pond, earning recognition as a New York Times bestseller.

The Netflix adaptation, featuring stars like Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, is due to launch later this month, reports the Express. Yet Richard reveals his authorial triumph in America has allowed him to wander about completely unrecognised.

During his The Rest is Entertainment podcast, he describes how this makes the US a "joy" to explore. He shared: "Most people don't pay much attention to what authors look like. If I'm in America, it's just a joy because I don't get stopped on the street, all that sort of stuff.
"If you're stopped at customs and they say you're an author and who you are, people have heard of you, and have read the books, so it's like you're John Grisham but for America. You can have a whole holiday where you do exactly what you want, where you want."

Richard elaborated that while avid readers of authors like John Grisham might recognise him from book jackets, the general public likely wouldn't.
The telly host delved into his experiences in the US after a listener queried about the "best job" in showbiz, suggesting band members with famous frontmen, such as Coldplay, can "live out their best rock and roll life" yet can "probably pop to Tesco without getting hassled".
However, Richard pointed out that some folks enter the entertainment industry "to be famous". He added: "I think if you want the joy of being in a creative industry and you want absolutely loads of money and huge amounts of adrenaline but you want to walk down the street, then being in Coldplay is quite hard to beat as a job in showbusiness."

Richard further explained that musicians have to do "loads of promo". His brother, Suede bassist Mat Osman, informed Richard that a band like Coldplay would be expected to sign around 150,000 albums for promotional material.
The TV personality concluded that being a travel blogger would be among the top jobs for those seeking anonymity whilst working in the entertainment industry.
He added: "You get to spend your entire life on holiday, wherever you go on holiday people absolutely love you, but outside your sphere, no one would necessarily recognise you, that would be a nice entertainment job."
Richard's podcast partner, Marina Hyde, revealed that since working on the show, people now approach her "all the time". The Guardian columnist confessed: "I've never had that, I don't think really, at all."

Cristiano Ronaldo wows with huge engagement ring but fans have complaint

Cristiano Ronaldo is officially engaged to Georgina Rodriguez (Image: georginagio/Instagram) Cristiano Ronaldo is sure to have spent a small fortune on his dazzling engagement ring for fiancée Georgina Rodriguez as fans can't believe the size of it. The football icon, 40, finally popped the question after almost a decade and two children later. They have long faced questions as to when they would finally walk down the aisle, with Cristiano now making the all important move. The couple had teased fans with a potential engagement after Georgina, 31, was spotted with a huge diamond on her finger. Neither had officially confirmed or denied if it was an engagement ring, with Cristiano revealed he hadn't asked for her hand in marriage because the timing wasn't 'quite right'. The couple racked up thousands of compliments and congratulations from their fans, while others had plenty to say on the ring. Georgina flashed a massive diamond that took up almost half of her ring finger. It featured one stunning stone that glistened on the white bedsheets while Cristiano place his hand underneath. Talk quickly turned to the price of the stunning jewel as one said: "For how much? That must have cost a backpack." Others were more taken aback by the size of the ring as someone exclaimed: "That rock." Another went further as they added: "A glacier!" Someone else commented: "Incredible, had to be the best in the world." A fifth joked: "Pretty small diamond." While one fan took issue with the practical side of things as they shared: "The ring is too big, it will make you uncomfortable when washing dishes." Another quipped: "Surely that's AI?! Who in their mind wants a boulder on their finger?!" "Surely that's photoshopped. I've no doubt he can afford something that big but WHY?!," wrote someone else. "This isn't coming from a place of jealousy that ring is too much," shared a social media user. Despite the criticism, Georgina seemed thrilled with the ring as she said: "Yes I do. In this and in all my lives." On her Netflix reality show I Am Georgina, she revealed her friends are always asking about wedding plans. She admitted: "They're always joking about the wedding. 'When is the wedding?' Since Jennifer Lopez's song The Ring Or When came out, they started singing it to me. And well, this is not up to me." The couple met at a Gucci store in 2016, with the ex-Manchester United superstar admitting that it was a case of love at first sight. "She's a fantastic person. Yes, it is [true love]. Yes, it was [like magic meeting for the first time]. Gio is part of me. She helps me so much.," he told Piers Morgan in an interview in 2019. "Of course, I'm in love with her. She's the mum of my kids. I'm so passionate for her. She's my friend, we have conversations. I open my heart to her. "She opened her heart to me. [She's the greatest love of my life]... Why not [get married]. Not now! Not in this interview. Why not, one day... We'll one day, for sure. It's my mum's dream." When celebrating Georgina's birthday earlier this year, Cristiano appeared to hint he had taken that next step. He posted on social media: "For the mother, partner, friend, my wife... happy birthday, love. Your light illuminates us and your love infects us." Some call the Sussexes' Netflix deal a demotion - but the company still sees them as a power couple

While we're all desperate to know what this new deal is really worth in dollars and pounds, one thing I can tell you for certain is that Prince Harry and Meghan want us to know they're delighted that Netflix again wanted to get a deal done. "Absolutely over the moon" is how it was described to me. But they'll also be aware of the attention it'll attract as we all try to pick apart what it means. Image: Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Pic: Jake Rosenberg/Netflix Firstly because of that ongoing fascination in how they're making money since stepping away from royal life and losing financial support from the King, but also because of the recent reports that Netflix were intending to cut ties. Yes this is a different type of deal from their original one in 2020. Some have argued that a "first look deal" looks like a demotion from what they previously signed up to. With no real clarity on how much their original deal was worth, and no numbers being publicly thrown around this time, that is hard to judge. But talking to those who know something about these kinds of deals you do get a sense it could potentially be more lucrative than it looks on face value. With first look deals, yes there is often financial commitments from the likes of Netflix to get that first exclusive look at projects and first refusal. For example, when the Obamas signed a first look deal with Netflix, the streaming service agreed to pay the operational costs for their production company "Higher Ground". Could it be that Netflix are also now covering the costs of Archewell Productions? Follow the World Listen to The World with Richard Engel and Yalda Hakim every Wednesday Tap to follow It's stating the obvious to say that Harry and Meghan continue to divide opinions, some wanting to watch their programmes from a place of respect and fondness, others as a reason to grumble about them. But signing on this latest dotted line shows Netflix still sees them as a power couple, who attract significant attention and are worthy of investment, whatever that really adds up to.

What to expect on Netflix thanks to Harry and Meghan's new deal

Harry and Meghan have given the streaming giant first options on their output from Archewell Productions. Here is what to expect from the couple on Netflix in the coming months: – With Love, Meghan – Season 2 The second instalment of Meghan's lifestyle show will debut later in August. Netflix said: 'Meghan returns with a fun and heartwarming new season, welcoming celebrity chefs, talented artists, and beloved friends for hands-on adventures filled with laughter and discovery.' It promises 'playful cooking challenges' and 'DIY projects', adding: 'Meghan and her guests explore bold flavours, experiment with new techniques, and discover simple ways to add beauty to everyday life.' The show, Netflix says, is 'all about embracing playfulness over perfection and finding joy in creating together'. Season one was not, however, well received by critics and the show has a 3.2 rating out of 10 on – With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration The special holiday episode of With Love, Meghan will air in December. Netflix invites viewers to 'join Meghan in Montecito for a magical holiday celebration'. The then-prince of Wales, then-duke and duchess of Cambridge, and the Sussexes attend the Christmas Day morning church service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham in 2018 (Joe Giddens/PA) It adds: 'Together, friends and family deck the halls, create holiday feasts, craft heartfelt gifts, and share lots of laughs – with simple how-tos to follow at home. 'It's a holiday wonder with warmth, tradition, and a generous dose of joy.' The Sussexes used to spend Christmas with the royal family at Sandringham but Harry and Meghan, who moved to the US five years ago, last did so in 2018. Harry is estranged from his brother the Prince of Wales after a bitter fallout and has a troubled relationship with his father the King. – Meet Me At The Lake The 'romance feature' is an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Carley Fortune. 'This romantic drama follows a decade-spanning love story that begins with a chance encounter and a broken promise,' Netflix says. No date has been announced for the project – news of which first emerged two years ago. The story deals with mental health, postnatal depression and childhood trauma over losing a parent in a car crash, with some of the themes said to have similarities with Harry and Meghan's own experience. – Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within The new documentary short, by Campfire Studios in Association with Wontanara Productions and Archewell Productions, will focus on a tiny orphanage in Uganda which was borne out of the HIV/Aids crisis. Harry and Meghan are listed among the producers and the documentary will be released later this year. The duke only recently stepped down from Sentebale, the charity he founded nearly 20 years ago to help children orphaned by Aids in Lesotho, following a boardroom battle with its chairwoman. Prince Harry during the opening of the Sentebale Mamohato children's centre in Thaba Bosiu, Lesotho, in 2015 (Ian Vogler/Daily Mirror/PA) Harry, who was left devastated by the development and who is considering starting a new humanitarian charity, vowed to continue his commitment to supporting youngsters in the region. Netflix says: 'In the heart of Uganda's Masaka region, where the shadows of the HIV/Aids crisis linger, a small orphanage becomes a beacon of hope. 'Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within goes beyond the viral videos to reveal a vibrant, one-of-a-kind community where orphaned children transform hardship into joy, dancing their way toward healing, belonging, and the promise of a brighter future.' It is not known whether Harry and Meghan will feature in the documentary. – Future projects Archewell Productions says it is 'in active development on additional projects with Netflix that span a variety of content genres'. The Sussexes' contract has been described as a 'multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects'.
