Nifty may hit 24,060 before recovery, IT breakout imminent: Geojit's Anand James

Time of India8 hours ago

Despite Friday's recovery attempt, technical charts are painting a cautious picture for
Nifty
in the coming week. Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, believes the recent sell-off isn't over yet and expects the index to test the 24,060 level before any meaningful recovery takes hold.
However, it's not all doom and gloom. While broader markets face headwinds, James sees a major breakout brewing in
IT stocks
, with the sector poised to surge toward 40,300 levels as an inverted Head & Shoulders pattern nears completion.

In an exclusive chat with ETMarkets, the market veteran shares his reading of the current technical setup, explains why PSU banks may struggle despite rate cut expectations, and reveals his top stock picks for the week ahead.
Edited excerpts from a chat:
Following the sell-off seen in the last 2 days, what are the charts hinting at for the coming week? Do you fear more downside?
The lack of momentum early last week, along with longs continuing to constitute just 20% of FII's index future positions, despite Nifty trading above a multi-week consolidation range, was enough signal that there was no enthusiasm in chasing prices higher. However, the steep drop having stretched almost to the lower range of the May-Jun trading band looks to have attracted buying interest. That we are also near 1 standard deviation from the 20-day SMA is also a supportive factor. Meanwhile, though VIX rose 7.6% on Friday, it is still not at a level that is threatening a collapse. With this in perspective, we will continue to nurture upswing hopes, but believe that they will be short-lived, we are more likely to head to 24060 at least, before broad-based strength returns. Note that SMIDs which have been at the forefront of the upswing in the last four weeks, have shown signs of plateauing.
Live Events
How do you read the outperformance of IT stocks? Will the outperformance continue?
The ongoing pullback that began in April appears to be gaining momentum and is likely approaching the final phase of a breakout from an inverted Head & Shoulders pattern on the weekly chart. The index is currently trading near its 50-week exponential moving average (WEMA), which continues to provide dynamic support. From a derivative angle, 60% of the IT stocks saw long buildup on Friday, and 70% saw long addition on a week-on-week basis. A robust green candle on the weekly chart, coupled with strengthening MACD histogram bars, signals growing bullish momentum. This setup suggests further upside potential in the coming weeks. We anticipate the index to advance towards 40,080 and 40,300 levels, driven by strong performances from key constituents such as Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, and Persistent Systems.
Nifty PSU Bank index broke 4-week winning streak to end over 2% lower. As PSU banks and NBFCs are said to be bigger beneficiaries of the rate cut and liquidity easing cycle, do you see chances of positive momentum returning?
After three consecutive sessions of decline, the Nifty PSU Bank Index staged a recovery on Friday, forming a strong bullish candle and closing above the 20-day moving average (DMA) at 6,918. This signals a potential short-term pullback toward the 7,000–7,025 range in the early part of next week. However, the weekly chart paints a more cautious picture. The formation of a bearish engulfing pattern, typically a reversal signal, combined with signs of momentum exhaustion in the SMIO histogram and 71% of the stocks witnessing Long unwinding from a derivative point of view on WoW basis, suggests that the rebound may be short-lived and could face resistance later in the week. From a broader perspective, as long as the index holds above the trendline support at 6,350, bulls may attempt to regroup around key support zones. The expected pullback is likely to be driven by strength in stocks such as State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Union Bank of India, and Indian Bank.
Cochin Shipyard shares were one of the biggest losers in the week and ended around 10% lower. Any thoughts on this stock's trajectory?
An evening star pattern spotted in the previous week had set off a week-long downtrend that has now found buying from the 20 day SMA, which is now near 2048. That the SMA also coincides with the 61% fibo retracement of the 21May-6Jun upmove is another reason for the buying interest. Yet, we believe that the ongoing recovery move may not turn lower again after a brief bounce, aiming for the low 1700s. Alternatively, direct rise above 2350-2400 region could keep the uptrend running for a longer period.
Give us your top ideas for the week.

Target – 224
SL - 198
The stock has been under pressure for the past five sessions but appears to have found support near the 50% Fibonacci retracement level at 201 (May low and June high). From this level, a recovery attempt is underway. On Friday, the formation of a Doji candle suggests indecision among traders, often a precursor to a potential reversal. Additionally, hourly MACD indicators are showing signs of exhaustion, pointing to a likely short-term pullback in the coming week.
We anticipate the stock to move toward the 224 level, with a protective stop-loss recommended below 198 to manage downside risk.
BLS (CMP: 369)
View – Buy
Target – 400
SL – 349
Following a five-day decline, the stock has found support near the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement level at 367 (may low and June high), from where a recovery attempt is underway. The formation of an inverted hammer candle on the daily chart suggests a potential short-term pullback, often seen as a reversal signal when appearing after a downtrend.
Given the current setup, we anticipate the stock to move toward the 400 level in the coming weeks. To manage risk, long positions should be protected with a stop-loss placed below 349.

ABB India and Godrej Properties: Stock recommendations for June 16

ICICI Securities' Vice President Dharmesh Shah has recommended investors consider buying ABB India and Godrej Properties shares on Monday, June 16, citing favorable technical setups and medium-term potential. This comes in the wake of a volatile trading week, where equity benchmarks witnessed a notable drop. On Friday, the Sensex fell 573 points to close at 81,118.60, while the Nifty 50 declined by 169.60 points, ending at 24,718.60. The downturn was driven by heightened geopolitical tensions after Israel's strike on Iran, which spooked markets globally and pushed Brent crude oil prices up by 18%. Despite the weak sentiment, Shah remains optimistic, predicting that the Nifty will hold the 24,500 support level. He advises using any further dip as an opportunity to accumulate quality stocks. Stock Recommendations for June 16: ABB India Buy Range: ₹5,950–₹6,130 Target Price: ₹6,860 Stop Loss: ₹5,648 Godrej Properties Buy Range: ₹2,350–₹2,470 Target Price: ₹2,748 Stop Loss: ₹2,218 Shah highlighted that despite global uncertainty, market internals remain strong. Notably, 55% of stocks are trading above their 200-day simple moving averages, indicating improving breadth. He adds that the midcap index remains resilient, undergoing only mild corrections despite a 28% rally since April. While volatility may persist due to geopolitical developments and upcoming US Fed policy updates, Shah expects markets to stabilize. Historically, similar geopolitical shocks have led to medium-term rebounds in Indian equities. Wind energy centre of Atma Nirbhar Bharat: India becomes 3rd largest maker of renewable energy; wind capacity hits 51.5 GW in a decade

On Global Wind Day 2025, Union minister for new and renewable energy Pralhad Joshi stressed on the importance of wind energy and said that it is crucial to India's clean energy plans and crucial to its ambition of becoming a global manufacturing hub. Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Bengaluru, he said India needs reliable energy, from wind, solar or other sources, to become a global manufacturing hub. "Wind energy is not a component of our renewable energy strategy, but it is at the heart of it and at the centre of Atma Nirbhar Bharat," he said. The minister said that India has achieved 51.5 GW of wind capacity, marking a 150% increase over the last decade, and is now exporting turbines and components globally. The country has set its sights on 100 GW of wind energy by 2030, including 30 GW from offshore projects, 'backed by strong policy reforms and a robust manufacturing ecosystem.' The minister said India has set clear and ambitious goals — to get 50% of its power from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and to become net-zero by 2070. He stressed that wind energy is not just a part of the country's renewable strategy, but lies at its core and is key to building an Atma Nirbhar Bharat. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo He also underlined the three issues the sector must now tackle: integrating wind with solar and storage for round-the-clock power, reducing tariffs from the current Rs 3.90 per unit, and boosting manufacturing efficiency to compete globally. Highlighting PM Modi's vision, Joshi said the goal is to use renewable energy to power India's manufacturing sector, while conventional energy continues to meet household needs. India is currently the world's fourth-largest country in installed wind power capacity and the third-largest renewable energy producer overall. India's manufacturing capacity is increasing, and it will continue to rise. "No one had thought that India would become the third largest manufacturer of renewable energy in 10 years, but today it is a reality," said the minister. To unlock the full potential of the wind sector, Joshi outlined five focus areas: expanding into new states like Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha; launching the offshore wind sector with leasing areas in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu; integrating wind with storage for firm green power; modernising the grid using AI-based forecasting; and strengthening local manufacturing across the wind value chain. Joshi also released two key reports, the Wind Energy Roadmap and Manufacturing Roadmap, to serve as frameworks for India's clean energy journey. 'These documents reflect our strategic vision and our collective resolve to build a strong, self-reliant wind ecosystem,' he said. The event also saw the recognition of top-performing states in wind capacity addition: Karnataka led with 1,331.48 MW, followed by Tamil Nadu (1,136.37 MW) and Gujarat (954.76 MW). Union minister of state for new and renewable energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, and Karnataka's energy minister, KG George, were also present at the event. India's wind ambitions align with its global climate commitments, including the five-point 'Panchamrit' pledge made at COP26 in Glasgow. These include reaching 500 GW of non-fossil capacity, cutting emissions by 1 billion tonnes, and reducing emissions intensity by 45%, all by 2030.
