"BJP security bill": Uddhav Thackeray raises concerns over passage of Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill

India Gazette5 days ago
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], July 11 (ANI): After the Maharashtra assembly cleared the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill of 2024, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Friday took a swipe against the ruling Mahayuti government, saying that the bill should be renamed as 'BJP security bill'.
He further accused the ruling Mahayuti government of 'misusing majority' while alerting that the government could 'pick up' commoners and imprison them.
'They can pick up anyone, including ordinary people, and imprison them. This bill is similar to previous acts like MESA and TADA. This bill should be called the 'BJP security bill' instead of the public security bill, as they believe speaking out against the BJP is tantamount to criticising the country. Currently, we don't support this bill,' Thackeray, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra, told reporters here.
He flagged the issue of missing words like 'Naxalism' and 'terrorism' in the bare act, against which the government is supposed to take action.
'They are misusing their majority rather than using it. It seems that the government says something and does something different. They say that the bill has been brought to end Naxalism and terrorism. However, the bill doesn't mention either Naxalism or terrorism. They have only mentioned 'left-wing extremist ideology' (or left-wing extremism),' Thackeray said.
'We need to differentiate between left-wing ideology and right-wing ideology. Generally, we all (Sena, BJP) lean towards the right-wing since we believe in religion. However, our constitution mentions ideals like equality, social justice, and personal liberty. Even Modi had said, 'sabka sath sabka vikas'. Is this leftist thinking or right-wing? I can't make out the difference,' he added.
The Shiv Sena UBT chief stressed that the government includes specific words like 'Naxalism' and 'Terrorism' to make the bill clear.
'I stand with the government if it is about fighting those who remain a threat to the country. However, it seems like you are bringing this bill inspired by a political agenda since there's no mention of Naxalism,' Thackeray said.
This comes after the Maharashtra Assembly passed the Special Public Security Bill on Thursday, aiming to counter radical left ideologies and organisations allegedly promoting unlawful activities across the state. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tabled the Bill in the Legislative Assembly.
The bill, which was first introduced during the Winter Session in Nagpur in December 2024, returned to the House after a Joint Committee, led by BJP leader Chandrashekhar Bawankule, reviewed over 12,000 suggestions for amendments.
The Chief Minister said the new bill was designed to fill the legislative gap left by the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which primarily deals with active terror activities but lacks scope in tackling ideological indoctrination and subversive movements. (ANI)

Bihar: Firing Reported at Paras Hospital In Patna

An incident of firing was reported at Paras Hospital in Patna, Bihar, police said. As per the police, a prisoner on parole was shot by unidentified assailants while receiving treatment at Paras Hospital. The prisoner is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. "A criminal named Chandan Mishra, resident of Buxar district, against whom dozens of cases of murder are registered. He was transferred from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail. Chandan was on parole and admitted to Paras Hospital for treatment. The rival gang shot him. He is undergoing treatment, and with the help of the Buxar police, we are identifying the members of the rival gang. We have the photographs of the shooters," ANI reported, quoting Patna SSP Kartikeya K Sharma. Following the incident, RJD leader and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav questioned the state's law and order. In a post on X, Yadav said, 'Criminals opened fire on a patient in a hospital ICU. Is anyone safe in Bihar today? Was it this unsafe before 2005?' This incident comes days after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India took suo motu cognisance of a media report regarding the alleged murder and burning of five members of a Scheduled Tribe family in Purnia district, Bihar, on the night of July 6. The incident reportedly occurred due to accusations of witchcraft. The NHRC has raised serious concerns over potential human rights violations and issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Bihar. The Commission has sought a detailed report within two weeks, encompassing the current status of the investigation and any actions taken against those responsible. In addition, the Commission has urged the State Government to ensure the safety and psychological support of the sole survivor, a 16-year-old boy who witnessed the incident and lost his entire family. Notably, the law and order issue has taken center stage in Bihar ahead of assembly elections, with the opposition accusing Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's government of deteriorating conditions. The Bihar Assembly elections are expected to be held between October and early November 2025. (With ANI Inputs)

Odisha Observes 12-Hour Bandh As Outrage Grows Over Students Suicide: Whats Open And Whats Closed?

A 12-hour state-wide 'bandh' (shutdown) is ongoing in Odisha today, Thursday, organised by a coalition of eight opposition parties. The extensive protest seeks justice for a 20-year-old college student who died in a tragic fire after having attempted self-immolation, reportedly over the lack of action on her complaint against sexual harassment by a professor. The student, a second-year student at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, died of her injuries at AIIMS Bhubaneswar late on Monday night, July 14, after sustaining severe burns. She had immolated herself on the college campus on Saturday, July 12, alleging her sexual harassment complaints were not taken seriously by the authorities. The 'bandh', which was called early today and was to go on until 6 PM, has taken a heavy toll on daily life in the state. Markets, shops, schools, and colleges are shut, and traffic has been mostly halted, causing roads to be empty as reported by Odisha TV. But necessary healthcare services, such as pharmacies, ambulances, and other health facilities, are functioning normally. Although there has not been any official government notice for the closure of state offices and banks, low staffing is expected. Train services also might encounter delays because of anticipated demonstrations and protests all day long. The fervor of the protest was witnessed on Wednesday, July 16, specifically in Balasore, where Biju Janata Dal (BJD) workers organized protests, occupying roads and setting tires ablaze. Similar protest was seen in Jaleswar, Basta, Soro, Baliapal, and Bhograi, resulting in traffic control by the police. The ghastly accident has set off a ferocious political storm. BJD leader Debi Prasad Mishra articulated the outrage of the people, asserting, "People are very angry over the denial of justice to the student who ultimately set herself on fire and died." He promised that his party would continue protesting throughout Odisha "till the BJP government announces a judicial probe into the incident." Opposition parties like the Congress and BJD have charged the BJP-ruled Odisha government of a cover-up and are calling for the immediate dismissal of Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has described the death of the student as not a suicide but an "organised murder by the system" and accused her of having been threatened and humiliated rather than given justice. To this, the state government has released a ₹20 lakh compensation for the family of the victim and revealed that the principal of the college and the Head of the Education Department have been arrested in regards to the case. They have appealed to other opposition parties not to politicize the tragedy and promised severe action against all the perpetrators. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has also constituted a four-member fact-finding committee to probe the incident, including whether institutional policies and grievance redressal are effective.
