Gene Hackman's secret unmarked grave after £62m inheritance snub
Gene Hackman was laid to rest in an unmarked grave in New Mexico, beside his wife Betsy Arakawa, two months after his death.
Hollywood legend Gene Hackman has been laid to rest in an unmarked grave in New Mexico, following the tragic deaths of both himself and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, whose partially mummified bodies were discovered at their Santa Fe mansion in February.
The 95-year-old Oscar winner was buried beside Betsy, with a private ceremony organised by his children, despite the fact they were excluded from his will, according to MailOnline. The pair were only able to be buried two months after their deaths due to the extended nature of the investigation, with the funeral held quietly away from public view, reports the Irish Star.
Hackman's £62 million estate has since become the subject of legal uncertainty. While his assets were originally intended to pass to successor trustees, those individuals have also since died, prompting an emergency court petition to appoint a temporary replacement, granted by a judge due to the unforeseen situation.
Hackman's children, Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie, were not named as beneficiaries in his will, yet legal experts suggest they may still inherit his estate.
California lawyer Tre Lovell told the BBC, "The estate will actually be probated in accordance with intestate succession laws and the children would be lawfully next in line to inherit."
The beloved actor had previously opened up about the strain his career placed on his home life.
Speaking to the New York Times in 1989, he reflected: "You become very selfish as an actor. Even though I had a family, I took jobs that would separate us for three or four months at a time. The temptations in that, the money and recognition, it was too much for the poor boy in me."
Authorities have now confirmed Hackman died from severe heart disease complicated by Alzheimer's, passing away just a week after Betsy.
His autopsy report provided a stark insight into his final days, with medical examiners detecting 5.3 mg/dL of acetone in his system, a level far higher than the typical maximum of 0.3 mg/dL.
The presence of such a high concentration suggests he may have stopped eating in the wake of his wife's death.

The toxicology report revealed that acetone is "also a product of diabetic- and fasting-induced ketoacidosis as well as a metabolite following isopropanol ingestion," leading to the conclusion that Gene's elevated levels could point to extended fasting.
Further examination cleared up initial concerns about a possible gas leak, confirming that carbon monoxide levels were within normal limits.
This brought relief to Gene's family, who had feared that such a leak may have contributed to both his and Betsy's untimely deaths.
Betsy's own passing was linked to a rare but deadly illness, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), which is contracted through contact with infected rodent droppings.
A health inspection of their home revealed a significant rodent infestation, with numerous deceased rodents found on the property, likely leading to her fatal exposure.

Heartbreaking Corrie scenes as Debbie confirms dementia diagnosis to loved ones
Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) has been keeping a huge secret from (most of) her family recently in Coronation Street, after she was diagnosed with dementia. Proud, independent Debbie felt like she didn't want to burden her brother Kevin (Michael Le Vell) with the news, as he's already going through a tough time with cancer treatment. As for her relationship with Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan), Debbie opted to dump him rather than tell him the truth. Debbie's split with Ronnie hasn't been easy for either of them, as they both love each other and had previously decided to get married. Ronnie has been left hurt and confused, while Debbie thinks he's already moved on as she's spotted him a few times in the company of Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson). So far the only person who knows about Debbie's diagnosis is her other brother, Carl (Jonathan Howard) – and he only found out by accident and has been sworn to secrecy by Debbie. But all that is about to change in an episode airing soon, where Debbie takes a sudden turn for the worse and is forced to open up to her family about what's really going on. Debbie and Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) go to the Chariot Square bar for a few drinks to cheer Debbie up after she admits to Bernie that she's finding it hard to be in the same room as Ronnie. Also in the bar is Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey), and when he causes a fuss by failing to produce ID when asked, Debbie loses it with him. We've seen Debbie becoming irrationally angry before and it's a symptom of her condition, and this time she really loses control and smashes Brody's glass on the bar. The next day Bernie is worried about Debbie because of her behaviour at the bar but also because she forgets to pay at the cafe. She's under pressure because there's been a flood at the hotel and she's facing having to cancel an awards ceremony, but Leanne offers to host the event at Speed Daal. Debbie's grateful for that, but once again she sees Ronnie and Leanne together joking about something, and it bothers her. More Trending Then Debbie suddenly collapses. She wakes up to find Kevin and Abi (Sally Carman) by her side and they tell her she has to go to hospital. Debbie tells them there's no need for that. Disturbing demise of dog owner who died with dachshunds as car plunges off cliff
Lynn King and her husband John died instantly when their silver Ford Mondeo, which also contained their two Dachshund dogs, plunged off a cliff at Alum Bay, Isle of Wight A bus driver and his frail wife died after their Ford Mondeo plummeted 300ft off a cliff. John and Lynn King died instantly once their silver vehicle clattered to the ground after going off the ridge at Alum Bay, Isle of Wight on Friday. Lynn was so ill and frail she hadn't left home for two years, neighbours said. John was a bus driver for Southern Vectis, an operator on the Isle of Wight, and it is understood he knew the roads across the island well. One local said they saw the couple, thought to have been in their early 70s, just hours before they died. They told Mail Online: "It's really sad, I spoke to John a few times. He would always park his car right outside my house. I think I saw his wife maybe twice in the three years they'd been living in the road. "She wasn't well. I don't know exactly what she was suffering from but I think it was serious. John was effectively her carer. I never saw nurses or medically trained staff ever go in. I think he did everything for her." READ MORE: Bus driver high on drugs who fell asleep at wheel and killed girl, 9, is jailed The neighbour said he saw John help Lynn to the car on Friday afternoon. They also had their two dachshunds with them, the friend added. They said: "His wife looked really, really frail. She was hunched over quite badly and was finding it very difficult to walk. I was surprised to see her out of the house." Police continue to investigate the deaths and are believed to be searching the couple's ented terraced home in Cowes, Isle of Wight. Pictures show officers there and at the scene of the crash - at the well-known coastal spot on the west of the island. Coastguard, police, firefighters and ambulance crews were all deployed and, within minutes, reportedly pulled a man from the wreckage and onto the shore. Response teams were then seen commencing CPR on one of the casualties, according to the Mail Online. Photographs of the aftermath show the wreckage of the car submerged in the water. With the roof and bonnet crumpled, while coastguard searched around it. In a statement released on Friday evening, the police said: "We're currently at the scene of a serious incident in Totland. We were called at 7.21pm this evening after a car, which was being driven along Alum Bay New Road, left the road, came off the clifftop and came to rest in the water below." Emergency services rushed to the scene and a winchman was lowered from the coastguard helicopter down to the bottom of the cliff on Friday.

Couple steal back their £46k car after 'police fail to act'
The couple had tagged their £46k Jaguar with an Apple Airtag - after tracking it to a London street, they were told cops couldn't immediately help. A stunned couple were forced to steal back their own Jaguar after police told them they couldn't offer immediate help. Mia Forbes Pirie, 48, and partner Mark Simpson, 62, were shocked when they discovered their £46,000 Jaguar E-Pace had vanished from outside their Brook Green home In West London on Wednesday morning, reports the Mirror. The pair had fitted the SUV with an Apple Airtag, allowing them to trace it to a street in Chiswick by 10.30am. However, after calling 999 they were not able to confirm when police would investigate. With no help on the horizon, the furious couple decided to take matters into their own hands. Mark said he was "nervous" as he and Ms Forbes Pirie made the four-mile journey to the car's new location. They discovered the car abandoned on a quiet back street, with the carpets and interior stripped by thieves who had attempted to access its wiring. The car was also fitted with a 'ghost immobiliser - an ant-theft device that prevents the car from starting unless a specific sequence of buttons is pressed on the dashboard. Ther pair, both legal professionals, made the decision to install multiple layers of security after a previous car theft. The last AirTag signal had gone off outside their home at around 3.20am, suggesting the car was likely taken overnight. Neighbours then reported hearing unusual noises during the night. Mia and Mark believe the theft was "reasonably sophisticated" and likely involved a tow or flatbed truck. Posting to LinkedIn, Ms Forbes Pirie said it was "kind of fun" stealing back the car but questioned "why we should have had to do that". She added: "[Is] it right that the police seem to have no interest in investigating what is likely to have been a reasonably sophisticated operation involving a flat bed truck… if there are no consequences, what is the incentive for people not to do more of this?" Speaking to the Times, Ms Forbes Pirie said she thought the Met's inability to respond was down to a lack of resourcing. She said: "The police are under-resourced and it's a shame. "But if there aren't any consequences to people stealing cars or a lot of the other crimes where there aren't any consequences, then I don't really see what the deterrent is to stop people from doing it more." Official Met Police figures show there were 33,530 motor vehicle thefts in London in 2024 - a 1.6% rise on the previous year. Only 326 resulted in a 'positive outcome' such as a charge or caution, a rate of less than 1%.
