
Airtel Africa plc: Results for quarter ended 30 June 2025
Our total customer base grew [1] by 9.0% to 169.4 million, with data customers increasing 17.4% to 75.6 million as the focus on bridging the digital divide across our markets continues. This, alongside a 4.3% increase in smartphone penetration to 45.9%, contributed to accelerating demand for data services with data ARPU growth accelerating to 18.5% in constant currency1 as data usage across our network increased by 47.4%.
Airtel Money continues to play a pivotal role in fostering financial inclusion with a 16.1% increase in customers to 45.8 million. As use cases continue to expand, customers are increasingly engaging with a wide range of offerings supporting a 35% increase in annualised transaction value to $162bn, and ARPU growth of 11.3% in constant currency.
Our strategic focus on great customer experience is underpinned by sustained network investment with the rollout of over 2,300 new sites to reach 37,579 sites and an expansion of our fibre network by 2,700 kms to over 79,600 kms. This investment continues to drive increased data capacity across the region with 4G population coverage reaching 74.7% – an increase of 3.4% from a year ago.
Financial performance
Revenues of $1,415m saw strong growth of 24.9% in constant currency and 22.4% in reported currency as currency headwinds continue to ease over the last three quarters. The acceleration in constant currency revenue growth from the previous quarter reflects not only the impact of the tariff adjustments in Nigeria, but also a strong performance in Francophone Africa reflecting the continued execution of our strategy focussed on the customer experience.
Across the Group, mobile services revenue grew by 23.8% in constant currency, driven by voice revenue growth of 13.9% and data revenue growth of 38.1%. Mobile money revenues continued to see a strong growth trajectory, with 30.3% growth in constant currency.
EBITDA grew by 29.8% in reported currency to $679m with EBITDA margins expanding further to 48.0% from 45.3% in the prior period driven by continued operating momentum, more stable fuel prices and sustained benefits from our cost efficiency programme.
Profit after tax of $156m improved from $31m in the prior period. The prior period was significantly impacted by derivative and foreign exchange losses, primarily in Nigeria, while the current period benefitted from a $22m gain largely arising from the Central African franc (CFA) appreciation during the quarter.
Basic EPS of 3.4 cents compares to 0.2 cents in the prior period, predominantly reflecting higher operating profit in the current period and derivative and foreign exchange losses in the prior period. EPS before exceptional items increased from 2.3 cents in the prior period to 3.4 cents, as higher operating profits more than offset the impact of higher finance costs arising from the tower contract renewals undertaken during the previous financial year.
Capital allocation
Capex of $121m was lower compared to the prior period, driven largely by timing differences. Capex guidance for the full year remains between $725m and $750m.
We continued with our debt localisation programme aimed to reduce our foreign currency debt exposure with almost 95% of our OpCo debt (excl. lease liabilities) now in local currency, up from 86% a year ago.
Leverage has increased from 1.6x to 2.2x (an improvement from 2.3x in Q4'25), primarily reflecting the $1.3bn increase in lease liabilities arising from the tower contract renewals, as previously disclosed. Lease-adjusted leverage remains flat at 0.9x.
Since the commencement of the second tranche of the share buyback for $55m, the company has returned $16.9m to shareholders following the purchase of 7.1 million ordinary shares as of 30 June 2025.

Operationally, the acceleration in customer base growth to 9%, and 17.4% growth in our data customers to 75.6m reflects the strong on-ground execution with a relentless focus on digitisation and the simplification of the customer experience. Our strategy continues to prioritise the customer experience, as demonstrated by the launch of Airtel Spam Alert—an AI-powered solution aimed at enhancing trust and delivering a safer network environment. This underscores our commitment to leveraging technology to lower barriers to smartphone adoption. With smartphone penetration at only 45.9%, we see significant headroom to drive further adoption and play a key role in bridging the digital divide.
Mobile money remains a cornerstone of our current and future growth proposition. With our customer base approaching 46 million and expanding by over 16%, we see significant potential to further advance financial inclusion through the continued growth of our financial services offering. The continued expansion of our mobile money portfolio and the advancement of enterprise and digital payments contributed to a 35% growth in annualised transaction value to $162bn. We will continue to focus on technology and the range of product offerings to deliver a differentiated experience for our customers.
The provision of these essential services and the strategic focus on providing a great customer experience underpinned the acceleration in constant currency revenue growth to 24.9%, translating into reported currency revenue growth of over 22% as currencies stabilise. This strong revenue performance and continued cost efficiencies contributed to further EBITDA margin expansion which resulted in strong EBITDA growth of approximately 30%, and we remain focussed on further margin improvements subject to macroeconomic stability. With a strong balance sheet and sustained network investment, I remain confident about our ability to capture the available growth potential across our markets and remain committed to efficiently and effectively delivering services that help to improve the lives, communities and economies we serve.'

UAE's sugar tax plan to 'incentivise' drink brands to deliver healthier options
Tax increases on sugar loaded drinks have been backed by soft drink producers and experts who said the move will push companies to offer healthier choices. From 2026, all UAE drinks will be priced according to their sugar content, per 100ml serving. Although it is not yet clear if new tariffs will affect alcoholic beverages, the drinks industry is braced for change. A departure from the flat rate sugar tax, will see the most calorific drinks hit with higher taxes to push consumers away from unhealthy options. The UAE has some of the region's highest rates for diabetes at about 20 per cent of the adult population, a condition exacerbated by sugar-sweetened drinks. Manufacturers have been exploring alternatives to sugar, such as the plant-based stevia, to sweeten drinks. But one of the world's largest soft drinks producers, PepsiCo, said consumer choice will always be driven by taste. 'We see this tax as allowing consumers to have more choices by allowing the industry to really innovate and reformulate products,' said Wael Ismail, vice president for corporate affairs, Africa, Middle East and South Asia, PepsiCo. 'Because of the tax brackets and how they're structured it allows the industry to invest more in awareness campaigns and research. We've seen this work in other places where this type of structure allows the industry to reformulate, innovate and offer consumer choices. 'Consumers will catch up to these trends, but our focus is really on taste. People like our products because of the recipes of the formulas that use sugar, but it's not the only component. As long as we're meeting consumer demands and tastes, we will always have a role to play.' Reformulated products Two of PepsiCo's most popular products are Pepsi-Cola and Mountain Dew. A reformulation of regular Pepsi sold in supermarkets and retailers has seen the sugar content reduced from 36g of sugar in a regular 330ml can to 15g. Mountain Dew is one of the most sugar laden soft drinks with each 355ml can containing a staggering 46g of sugar. By 2025, PepsiCo aims for at least two-thirds of its drinks sales volume to have 100 calories or less from added sugars per 355ml serving, which equates to about 26g of sugar. 'Back in 2017 when this tax was first introduced we went from an environment with no taxes to an environment with very high taxes,' said Mr Ismail. 'This had an impact on volumes, but markets have stabilised, since. We see this new change in the tax regime as fundamentally showing how the UAE and Gulf countries want to work with industry to consult, collaborate to find these win-win solutions.' Many soft drinks manufacturers have evolved to suit changing markets, by reducing the size of cans or developing sugar-free alternatives. Coca-Cola is also modifying products to suit consumer tastes and new tax bands. The company said it was committed to making more reduced and no-sugar versions of drinks, while making them easier to find. In 2023, 30 per cent of drinks sold by Coca-Cola were low or no calorie, while 68 per cent of products contained less than 100 calories per 355ml serving. International approach has mixed success The tiered sugar tax set for the UAE has been in place in South Africa since 2018. The Health Promotion Levy is fixed at 2.1 per cent per gram of sugar above 4g per 100ml, but has had a mixed effect in a nation where 70 per cent of women are obese or overweight, and one in three men. As taxes were not ring fenced for health services, just ZAR38 million (Dh7.8m) of the ZAR7.9 billion (Dh1.63bn) collected was used to promote healthy living, while the sugar industry suffered 16,621 job losses. There was, however, a 29 per cent reduction in average consumption of carbonated drinks per household. In the GCC, consumer choices have changed significantly since the sugar tax was first introduced in 2017, and the price of some soft drinks doubled overnight. A cross-sectional study by King Fahd Hospital in Madinah showed a 19 per cent decrease in soft drinks consumption after taxation in Saudi Arabia, with a 75 per cent reduction among obese participants. In the UAE, however, the results from the first sugar tax were less conclusive. A study conducted by the Dubai Health Authority and University of Ontario showed no statistically significant change in consumption of sugar sweetened drinks by gender, age or nationality. It is not yet clear if the new sugar taxes will include alcoholic drinks. While most beers contain up to 3g of sugar per 355ml serving, some wines can contain about 8g per 148ml glass. Cider is generally the most sugary alcoholic drink with a 473ml glass containing up to 21g of sugar. "The results of the 2017 UAE sugar tax were not exactly a revolution, but not bad either,' said Shamma Al Falahi, partner, Head of the Tax Department at BSA Law. 'Sales of sugary drinks dropped from 7.4 per cent to 5.9 per cent of the beverage market, according to World Health Organisation data. 'The new tiered system is expected to incentivise healthier formulations and make healthier beverages more affordable and accessible. 'It means new compliance costs for businesses, registration, and the need to rethink reformulating the products. Wealthier consumers are less sensitive to price hikes and may accept paying off the extra cost. 'However, evidence from other countries suggests that sugar taxes can still be effective in reducing consumption among vulnerable populations, such as young people and low-income consumers, who are more responsive to changes in relative prices.' The UAE Ministry of Finance said the recent amendment to the excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages was only preliminary, When asked about the addition of sugar taxes to include alcoholic beverages, a spokesperson said 'additional details will be announced in due course to support businesses in achieving full compliance with an updated policy'. A review of the region's sugar tax by the WHO found further taxation had the potential to reduce childhood obesity in Saudi Arabia from 38 per cent in 2020, to 34 per cent by 2030. In the UAE, the potential is to reduce the rate from 37 per cent, to 34 per cent. Health implications Reshma Devjani, a clinical dietician at Fakeeh University Hospital Dubai, said fewer than 10 per cent of a child's calorie intake should be derived from free sugars. 'Reducing sugar content will help cut down on a concentrated source of calories and carbohydrates,' she said. 'This could reduce weight gain and obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dental caries and heart health.' According to the World Bank, there are 117 nations and territories now subject to a tax on sugary drinks, affecting 57 per cent of the global population.

How Nigeria's new palm oil traceability system could reclaim global dominance?
A slow but steady revolution is ongoing that could turn Nigeria's decades-old palm oil story from decline to dominance. Palm oil that once placed Nigeria on the global map in the 1960s is getting a gaining attentiononce more. A new traceability framework, known as the National Palm Oil Traceability System (NaPOTS), is being developed to transform how palm oil is produced, tracked, marketed, and exported. With production currently at 1.4 million metric tons annually, and a national demand that exceeds 2 million metric tons, Nigeria now spends more than $600 million every year importing palm oil. The gap between what Nigeria grows and what it consumes has become a major concern, not only economically, but also in terms of food security and sustainability. 'We're expecting two things, one of the key implementing partners behind the initiative. 'First, an effective traceability system. Second, a strong policy framework aligned with Nigeria's Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy from 2022 to 2027', said Kene Onukwube, Program Manager at Solidaridad Nigeria. For Onukwube and his team at Solidaridad, this isn't just about tracking palm oil, it's about restoring accountability across the value chain, from the seedling planted in Enugu to the oil-filled jerrycan in a Lagos market. For too long, Nigeria's domestic production has struggled with inefficiencies, hidden yields, untraceable processing, and questionable quality control. 'With traceability in place, efficiency will improve in production, processing, and marketing. You'll be able to know who produced what, where, and under what conditions. That visibility is transformational', Onukwube explained. Backed by the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United Kingdom's Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Solidaridad has already piloted traceability models in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Enugu, and Kogi states. These pilots showed that with the right tools and stakeholder engagement, traceability isn't just possible, it's practical. Recognising the need for national coordination, Solidaridad partnered with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to elevate NaPOTS from a state-level experiment to a national policy. The result was the inauguration of a new inter-agency committee by the ministry, tasked with refining and institutionalising NaPOTS nationwide. 'This event is not just a launch, it is a strategic milestone in Nigeria's journey to reclaim its rightful place as a palm oil powerhouse', said Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security. In the 1960s, Nigeria produced over 40 per cent of the world's palm oil. Today, that figure has fallen to less than 2 percent. The global market has surged ahead with industrial-scale plantations, climate-smart agriculture, and export-driven policies, while Nigeria's smallholder farmers struggle with poor yields, outdated tools, and fragmented data systems. A major driver of this initiative is compliance, especially with the European Union's Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which requires exporters to prove that their palm oil is not linked to deforestation. 'Traceability is the language of the now and the future. A product without a story of origin will be a product without a market', the Minister said. But beyond compliance, NaPOTS offers something deeper: a chance to rebuild confidence in Nigerian agriculture. NaPOTS aligns with the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy's vision for digital transformation. Through digital platforms, geospatial mapping, and farmer ID systems, the traceability platform will collect and verify data at every stage of the value chain. The system captures key data such as GPS coordinates of farms, producer identities, palm variety and tree age, harvest volumes and timings, processing and transportation details, environmental and ethical compliance and export destinations and transaction history. With this unified data architecture, policymakers can make informed decisions, investors gain visibility into supply chains, and consumers receive ethical assurance. Beyond data, NaPOTS holds enormous potential to spark green growth and climate-smart agriculture. By identifying yield gaps and enabling precision extension services, the system will support best management practices (BMPs) and promote eco-friendly inputs. Smallholder farmers who produce over 80 percent of Nigeria's palm oil, will finally gain access to tools and training to improve both their productivity and incomes. For global investors, a transparent Nigerian palm oil sector is a far more attractive prospect. 'We're seeing growing interest in sustainability-compliant commodities. NaPOTS opens new investment pipelines by offering transparent land-use and production records', Onukwube said. Moreover, the export landscape will shift. With NaPOTS in place, Nigerian palm oil will be better positioned to meet the requirements of high-value markets like the EU, UK, and Asia. This directly supports Nigeria's non-oil export ambitions and improves foreign exchange earnings. But achieving all this will require synchronized efforts. The newly inaugurated Inter-Agency Committee includes representatives from government ministries, NGOs, private sector processors, exporters, and research institutions. Each has a unique role, whether in data collection, regulation, capacity building, or market access. Research institutions like the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) will also benefit. With access to harmonised, real-time data, they can accelerate breeding programmes, climate adaptation research, and socio-economic impact studies. Like any major reform, NaPOTS faces challenges, data integrity, infrastructure gaps, low digital literacy among farmers, and stakeholder coordination. However, the policy document outlines a detailed roadmap supported by key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress. Some of these KPIs include number of farmers and processors registered on the NaPOTS platform, percentage of palm oil volumes traced end-to-end, reduction in palm oil imports, increase in sustainability-certified exports and investment volume in traceable palm oil projects. As Nigeria embarks on this new journey, the stakes are high, but so are the opportunities. If implemented effectively, NaPOTS could serve as a model for traceability in other agricultural sectors, from cocoa to cashew.
