Jill Sobule's mysterious death at age 66 draws investigation 'to see if drugs were involved'
The beloved pop star, who is known for iconic '90s anthems which were featured in the cult classic film Clueless, was found dead at the age of 66 in a blaze at a Minneapolis residence.
However, an investigation has launched to determine the exact circumstances of her tragic passing — specifically if she died before the fire broke out or due to the blaze.
As investigators try to determine her time of death, they have started testing to see if drugs, alcohol or carbon monoxide played a part.
A rep for the Ramsey County Medical Examiner in Minnesota reported that investigators are trying to figure out if she was still alive when the house fire broke out, per TMZ.
Sobule was discovered to be deceased when Woodbury Public Safety received a call about an active housefire around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday and first responders arrived to begin searching for a missing person.
Sobule's manager and agent confirmed her death, according to the outlet, as many mourned her for being a 'force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture.'
Sobule tragically perished in a house fire in Minneapolis early on Thursday morning, according to Variety.
Firefighters received a call around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday about a fire in Woodbury, Minnesota, according to local news reports.
The home was already engulfed in flames by the time first responders arrived, and the blaze — whose cause wasn't immediately known — is reportedly under investigation.
Sobule, who also had a song featured in the classic 1995 comedy Clueless, reached number 20 on US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks that year with I Kissed A Girl, making it the most-successful openly LGBTQ-themed song up to that point on the Billboard charts.
She later feuded with Katy Perry after she released her hit song of the same name nearly a decade later in 2008.

In 2009, Sobule lashed out at Perry, calling her a 'f***ing little slut' in a 2009 interview with The Rumpus after initially claiming she wasn't bothered by the song.
In a 2008 interview, the singer–songwriter claimed she didn't 'feel precious about the title,' but she also admitted to getting a thrill whenever compared Perry's song unfavorably to hers.
Sobule eventually took issue with Perry reusing the song's name after the California Gurls singer claimed she had come up with 'in a dream.'
'In truth, she wrote it with a team of professional writers and was signed by the very same guy that signed me in 1995. I have not mentioned that in interviews as I don't want to sound bitter or petty — 'cause, that's not me.'
In the same interview, Sobule vented her fury at Perry in a shocking tirade.
'F*** you Katy Perry, you f***ing stupid, maybe "not good for the gays," title thieving, haven't heard much else, so not quite sure if you're talented, f***ing little slut,' she said.
Although her fame ebbed over time, she continued to regularly record and release new music in recent years.
The performer had been scheduled to appear at Swallow Hill Music's Tuft Theater in Denver, Colorado — her birthplace — on Friday.

Sobule was slated to perform a show of music from her recent autobiographical musical F*** 7th Grade, along with other tunes, but the event will reportedly now be an informal memorial hosted by 105.5 FM host Ron Bostwick, a friend of the late singer.
Her representative added that a more formal memorial to her life and work will be held this summer.
Sobule's manager, John Porter, said in a statement to Variety: 'Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture. I was having so much fun working with her.
'I lost a client and a friend today,' he continued. 'I hope her music, memory, & legacy continue to live on and inspire others.'
Sobule's longtime attorney, Ken Hertz, also paid tribute to her in a statement.
'Jill wasn't just a client. She was family to us. She showed up for every birth, every birthday, and every holiday,' he said. 'She performed at our daughter's wedding, and I was her "tech" when she performed by Zoom from our living room (while living with us) during the pandemic.'
Beginning with her 1990 debut, Things Here Are Different, Sobule released an impressive 10 studio albums and two live albums.
She was also featured in a 2003 concert film and released a greatest-hits compilation in 2001, along with several EPs in the 2000s and early 2010s.
Sobule had multiple projects in the works, included an original cast recording of F*** 7th Grade, which is scheduled for a June 6 release.
The acclaimed show was a hit with critics and was named a New York Times Critic Pick before selling out multiple extensions of its original off-Broadway run in 2022.
The show, which featured the singer performing a mix of new and old songs, was nominated for a Drama Desk award.
F*** 7th Grade's original cast album will be released alongside a 30th anniversary reissue of her self-titled sophomore album.
The original album featured I Kissed A Girl, and subsequent reissues have included her single Supermodel, which was originally featured on the Clueless soundtrack.
The song — which Sobule didn't write, unlike I Kissed A Girl — was released as the third single from the hit Alicia Silverstone–starring film's soundtrack in August 1995.
But unlike her earlier success that year, Supermodel failed to chart in the US, which though it had modest chart success in Australia.
Sobule — who identified as bisexual — wasn't afraid to touch hot-button issues in her songs, which made the prospect of strong chart showings difficult after her initial successes in the mid-'90s.
However, she maintained a devoted fan base all throughout her career, and it was thanks to them that she was able to crowdfund the recording of her 2009 LP California Years, even though that funding model was still in its infancy.
She returned to crowdfunding to finance her 2018 album Nostalgia Kills, which was her last studio album released before her death.
Aside form her work on record, she also contributed the theme song to the Nickelodeon sitcom Unfabulous, which aired from 2004–2007 and starred a young Emma Roberts.
Sobule is survived by her brother James Sobule and his wife Mary Ellen, as well as by her nephews, Ian Matthew, Robert and his wife Irina.

TikTok star John Crawley dead at 47 days after being rushed to ICU
TikTok star John Crawley has died at the age of 47. Crawley, who was known as KingBeardX and Pimpmunkx on social media and became famous for his hilarious reactions to people eating food, died at the hospital on Monday following a cardiac arrest, according to TMZ. Crawley had been in the hospital for at least two weeks, according to James Steele, the funeral director at Glenfield Funeral Home in New Albany, Mississippi. Crawley's friend and former podcast cohost, Anthony Caruso, started a GoFundMe page for the star, after he went to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo due to breathing issues. The comedian was later put on a ventilator and stopped breathing, so doctors moved him to the ICU, where a tube was placed in his chest prior to his passing. Crawley had amassed over 2.5 million followers on TikTok and 996K followers on Instagram. Friends of Crawley set up a GoFundMe to help his family. According to the page, Crawley didn't have medical insurance and was the primary provider for his family. The money raised will cover his funeral expenses and help support his family. 'Knowing him personally, John was a good guy. He lit up a lot of people's worlds,' Steele told TMZ. 'I just left his house and was with his mother, we prayed together. She's torn up right now but she's going to make it.' On August 4 a family member gave an update on Crawley's condition via the GoFundMe page, writing: 'He went to the hospital; he was having trouble breathing. Doctors put him on a ventilator… we went past 66% (O2 levels) and he stopped breathing. They (put him into the ICU and) brought it back up to 100% (O2 levels). He just had a tube placed in his chest… his breathing condition is still very bad.' However on Tuesday Caruso updated the page with the news of Crawley's passing. 'I'm really sorry to tell everyone the bad news but Pimpmunkx (KingBeardx) passed away yesterday,' he wrote. 'Thank you to everyone that has supported the fundraiser so far. His mother says told me to thank you all.' 'The fundraiser will continue to go on to support fundraising a funeral/helping John's mother.' The fundraiser has currently raised $2,228 of its $9,000 goal. Friends of Crawley set up a GoFundMe to help his family. Food influencers narrowly escape death as car crashes into table mid-review
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A food blogger couple were mid-bite recording a review when a car smashed through the restaurant and showered them with glass shards. Influencers Nina Unrated and Patrick Blackwood were filming with a table full of food at CuVee's Culinary Creations in Houston, Texas, when an SUV rammed into the establishment. They had just done a cheers tap with their salmon sliders and were a few chews in and reacting 'mmm' with satisfaction, when glass went flying in front of them. The footage, including a slow motion version, was shared on Instagram by Nina on Monday and showed the couple blown off their seats to the left, with their faces overcome with shock. Nina fell off the booth, and Patrick followed shortly after with glass pieces all over his lap. Four employees at the restaurant at the back near the bar and kitchen watched with their jaws dropped. The influencers said they were 'just sitting in a cozy booth at our favorite restaurant, enjoying happy hour with an amazing spread of salmon sliders, presidential oysters, a macaroni and cheese flight (classic, lobster, and truffle), shrimp and grits, and some refreshing drinks', and that the SUV crashed through at 35 to 40mph. 'No warning at all, glass shattered everywhere, chaos erupted, and it hit right next to Patrick on the outside of the booth,' said Nina, who has 230,000 Instagram followers. 'We were inches from disaster, but by some miracle, we're both okay, just shaken and forever changed.' In separate social media posts, each of them revealed their injuries. Nina had cuts and bruises on her face and body and was recovering at a hospital. Patrick, who has more than 40,000 Instagram followers, had wounds on his face and head and stitches on cuts on his body. 'Grateful to see another day, walking away from the small stuff with a big purpose,' he said. The restaurant owner told TMZ that the SUV driver was unscathed and that she will be held accountable for the damages to the business. Authorities told the media outlet that the driver was not impaired and that it was a freak accident. More Trending Nina posted that she was 'beyond grateful to be alive'. 'This experience showed me who truly matters; life's too short for grudges or anger. Let go, forgive, live in the now, and cherish those around you,' she wrote. 'This could've been our last meal.' It happened more than seven months after a Porsche SUV crashed into a barber shop in West Houston that was full of customers and hit a 10-year-old boy. The terrifying moment was captured on a Ring camera and showed debris flying and people running in all directions. The boy was rushed to a hospital and had surgery for internal bleeding. Austin Butler cosies up to co-star Zoe Kravitz as they lead celebrities at the Caught Stealing photocall in London after sparking romance rumours
Austin Butler looked very cosy with his co-star Zoe Kravitz as the pair attended the Caught Stealing photocall in London on Tuesday. The Elvis star, 34, and the American filmmaker, 36, beamed from ear to ear as they gazed at each other and hugged in front of the cameras. The two actors previously sparked romance rumours following their respective splits, however a source poured cold water on the claims when speaking to TMZ. Back in April, a source revealed that the co-stars 'had been spending time together over the past few weeks and were 'getting on very well.' They told the Sun: 'Their chemistry is as good off-screen as it is on it. Austin and Zoe have been keeping it under the radar and aren't putting a label on anything yet. They are both very respectful of their ex-partners and are just seeing how things go.' However more recently, sources claimed they definitely aren't dating after rumours hit fever pitch when they were seen at an immersive show called Viola's Room in July. Insiders told the publication that they attended the show with Caught Stealing director Darren Aronofsky and are 'just friends'. The two pals did look very close as they posed together this week, with Zoe looking effortlessly classy in a pale yellow summer dress and black ballerina shoes. The Batman actress finished off with a pair of trendy oval shades, while Austin opted for a dark brown jacket and quirky ripped white tee. The Californian hunk added khaki green denim and toted the ensemble with dark vintage sunglasses, even holding hands with his fellow co-star. At the star-studded press event, the duo posed up alongside Caught Stealing director Darren. The stellar cast it's joined by Hollywood legend Liev Schreiber as well as Doctor Who legend Matt Smith, Vincent D'Onofrio, Regina King and even Puertorican hitmaker Bad Bunny will make an appearance. The crime/comedy film, which will hit UK theatres on August 29, began filming in September of last year, six months after Austin's casting was confirmed. As per Deadline, the film 'follows Hank Thompson (Butler), a burned-out former baseball player, as he's unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of '90s New York City.' Caught Stealing marks Austin's latest high-profile role after starring in Dune: Part Two, which remains the highest grossing film of 2024 thus far. The Dune sequel — which also starred Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya and Florence Pugh — has raked in $700million at the worldwide since it premiered in theaters in March. The American actor earned his first-ever Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor last year for his portrayal of the late music icon Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's acclaimed 2022 musical biopic. Elvis catapulted him to A-list stardom — over two decades after he found fame in the early 2000s as a child star on Nickelodeon. The actor's latest film The Bikeriders starring Tom Hardy and Jodie Comer hits theaters in June and has an 80 percent 'fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As for Zoe, the daughter of Lenny Kravitz released her directorial debut film Blink Twice in late August after years of working in front of the camera. Her acting credits include starring in HBO's mini-series Big Little Lies, Hulu's now-canceled show High Fidelity and The Batman (2022) with Robert Pattinson and Colin Farrell. Blink Twice is about tech billionaire Slater King (played by Zoe's fiance Channing Tatum) who invites cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) on a vacation on his private island. However, she begins questioning her reality following a series of strange events. While promoting the film, Channing dished that Zoe worked on the film's script for seven years before taking it to the big screen. Blink Twice reportedly made $68million at the worldwide box office on a $20million budget.
