John Cena's shocking heel turn with The Rock was the ultimate WWE swerve. What happens now?
Who could have seen it coming? It's not like the idea hasn't been mooted before across Cena's two decades in the business. It has always sat there just within reach, the equivalent of a 'break glass in case of emergency' option. But WWE has held back on pushing that particular button — until now.
Why the change? To state the obvious, it was now or never, given that the 16-time world champion is due to hang up his boots at the end of the year. But all signs before Saturday night had pointed to Cena sticking to the babyface playbook on his retirement tour. A month ago, he was lifting the hand of Jey Uso after the Royal Rumble.
Even in the Elimination Chamber match itself, Cena was still playing the good guy. To the delight of longtime wrestling fans, he hugged CM Punk, perhaps the ultimate display of honor, before the two traded blows. It was "hustle, loyalty, respect" in spades.
That the segment involving The Rock and Cody Rhodes had been chosen to end the show was a clear sign that something big was coming. But this? Having Cena deliver a low-blow to the Universal Champion and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with The Final Boss? No one predicted that.
As with last year's kick off show in Las Vegas, the twist massively ups the ante for this year's WrestleMania 41 main event. Rhodes has been a fantastic champion, but it's no secret that his rivalries have lacked the urgency of his massive title win over Roman Reigns in Philadelphia. That all changes now.
In short, babyfaces work best when we have a reason to root for them. Rhodes cutting heartfelt promos in his immaculate tailoring works fine, but having the champion splayed out and bloody as the bad guys whip him with a leather strap? That's 10 times more powerful when it comes to getting us invested.
Will Cena win against Rhodes in April at WrestleMania 41? At risk of eating my words later, I'm guessing not. Though naturally WWE will pull out all the stops to make us fear that's going to happen. Expect to have your heart in your mouth when 'The American Nightmare' pulls off a split-second kick-out, having just been grounded by a surprise Attitude Adjustment.
This unexpected path we've been led down is even more intriguing given what's been happening with Rhodes losing some of his old friendships. In 2024, Rhodes had his allies to protect him against the sheer force of The Bloodline. But who does he have to protect him this time around? I suspect that Saturday night won't be the last time we see the champion outnumbered and outgunned.
As to whether the heel turn meets the hype, there are still big questions to answer. Can Cena even play the heel role, for one. But also whether he will be staying in dark mode for the entire retirement tour. It seems odd to deprive fans of the chance to cheer 'The Champ' for one last time, but switching back too quickly will feel inauthentic.
There's also the risk that Cena ends up being overshadowed by The Rock, who has now cemented his position as the ultimate 'big bad' in WWE. My initial suspicion is that we're seeing the first steps toward Rhodes vs. Rock at WrestleMania 42, after 'The Final Boss' realizes that, having failed to build up two heels to defeat Rhodes, he'd like to try to do the job himself.
Of course, all of that is months away. Until then, it's best to strap in and enjoy the ride. Last week, WWE confirmed that Cena will be appearing on several of their upcoming European shows, which are being billed as semi-specials under the 'Road to WrestleMania' brand. I suspect that's when the heel turn really begins gathering pace.
It's no exaggeration to say that fantasy bookers have been dreaming about this scenario for decades. Now they're getting what they asked for. Please don't fumble this one, WWE.

WWE SummerSlam 2025 Potential Surprises And Returns
Seth Rollins was recently injured at Saturday Night's Main Event. (Credit: Heather McLaughlin/WWE ... More via Getty Images) WWE SummerSlam 2025 will be the first-ever two-night edition of WWE's summer spectacle, and it features a slew of matches with major long-term ramifications. Among them, John Cena will defend his WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes in a Street Fight, a bout that will undoubtedly play a significant role in determining Cena's trajectory over the last five months of his retirement tour. In addition, CM Punk vs. Gunther for the WWE Championship, the likely main event of Saturday's show, will have a domino effect that trickles down Raw's entire main event scene. The massive show in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey could feature more than 45,000 fans in attendance for each night, and they may be in for a number of big surprises and blockbuster returns. Bayley Turns Heel On Lyra Valkyria When Becky Lynch defends her WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship against Lyra Valkyria, there will be no disqualifications and no countouts. In addition, if Valkyria loses, she can never challenge Lynch for the IC title again. Well, that sure smells like a recipe for Valkyria to lose in cheap fashion, doesn't it? WWE has not-so-subtly planted the seeds for Lynch to retain with the help of an old rival: Bayley. 'The Role Model' has made it quite clear that she isn't happy about being left off the SummerSlam card, and she has put that blame squarely on the shoulders of Valkyria. Look, anyone who has watched WWE consistently can tell you that a babyface star being shafted out of a title by a fellow babyface, even if it happens inadvertently, lays the perfect framework for an epic heel turn. With Bayley, Valkyria and Lynch all pursuing the same title in a never-ending vortex of feuds and matches, the best finish at WWE SummerSlam is for Bayley to cost Valkyria the match and turn heel in the process. Plus, with the No DQs, No Countouts stipulation, WWE is practically telling fans that it will happen even though Bayley remains very popular. Gunther Beats CM Punk Cleanly When it comes to the World Heavyweight title match, one scenario that seems to be overlooked is Gunther actually winning cleanly. With this bout penciled in to headline WWE SummerSlam on Saturday, the prevailing thought is that it will end with some sort of significant storyline development, perhaps with CM Punk winning his first world title in WWE in 12 years. In reality, though, Gunther only just won back the World Heavyweight Championship and is one of the most protected wrestlers in all of WWE. In other words, it's far from a shoo-in that Gunther loses cleanly, or loses at all, even though the widespread expectation is that Punk is a lock to win at WWE SummerSlam. Seth Rollins Returns At WWE SummerSlam and Cashes In Despite suffering what appeared to be a legitimate leg injury at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event, WWE has reportedly penciled in a Seth Rollins cash-in for WWE SummerSlam 2025. The idea is for WWE fans to think that Rollins will be out of action for several months, only for 'The Visionary' to actually return at SummerSlam mere weeks after his supposed injury. Given that Rollins has vowed time and time again that he will never let Punk become world champion, his cash-in is expected to close out SummerSlam Saturday. That leaves three potential options: Rollins cashes in during the match to make it a triple threat a la Naomi, or he cashes in afterward, whether on Punk or Gunther. Of those choices, the most logical is Rollins cashing in during the match to ensure that Punk doesn't get to become champion at all. With such a cloud of uncertainty hanging over Rollins' status, a possible surprise WWE SummerSlam return would send the New Jersey crowd into an absolute frenzy. John Cena And Cody Rhodes Execute a WWE SummerSlam Double Turn Although WWE rather recently rejected an idea to turn Cody Rhodes heel, the company has hinted during his feud with John Cena that it's an actual possibility. The main reason why? Well, Cena is clearly taking small steps toward making a return to his babyface roots, and at times during their rivalry, the two stars have appeared to flip-flop face and heel roles. While that's based largely on crowd reaction more than anything else, it appears to be a virtual certainty that Cena will return to being a fan favorite mere months after his epic Elimination Chamber heel turn. Of course, Cena transitioning back to a babyface role doesn't necessarily mean that Rhodes turns heel, and it would be risky to turn Rhodes given that he's arguably WWE's most popular star. But the majority of WWE's fan base had given up on a potential Cena heel turn. Then, boom. It finally happened. Rhodes is in a different spot as WWE's No. 1 full-time face, but if there was ever a time to turn him heel, WWE SummerSlam is it. The Rock Makes Surprise WWE SummerSlam Return The follow-up to Cena's heel turn has been married by Travis Scott's 'falling out' with and The Rock's bizarre disappearance from the storyline altogether. At last word, there also was no real sign that The Rock is returning at WWE SummerSlam. Then again, this is WWE, where it's possible, if not probable, that the company would be tight-lipped about a potential return for its biggest star ever. And if it does happen, SummerSlam is the perfect stage for it. The Rock has plenty of recent history with both Rhodes and Cena, and the Street Fight stipulation for their SummerSlam matches leaves the door wide open for a convoluted finish. During WWE's creative era under Triple H, many pay-per-view main events have featured numerous run-ins and a plethora of outside interference. That figures to be the case at WWE SummerSlam, and while it may not be The Rock who does it, that possibility can't be ruled out, either.

Hulk Hogan's son appears at WWE's 'RAW' to help honor father after his death
Nick Hogan, the son of pro wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, appeared on WWE's "Monday Night Raw" and stood front and center with his wife as the organization paid tribute to his father. Hogan was spotted near WWE executive Bruce Prichard and former pro wrestling executive Eric Bischoff. The "Raw" roster was also out on stage as a 10-bell salute was performed. "Ladies and gentlemen, we lost one of the biggest and globally recognized icons in the world. A man I grew up watching, was fortunate enough to share the ring with, and like so many of us, were honored to call a friend," WWE Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque said. "The truth is, he captivated millions and millions of people and inspired them around the globe. We would not be standing here right now, all of us together, if it was not for him." "Monday Night Raw" took place in Detroit. The crowd chanted his name as the WWE played a video montage to honor him. The company did something similar on "Friday Night SmackDown." Hulk Hogan died on Thursday after he suffered a cardiac event at his Florida home. He was 71. Nick Hogan offered a touching tribute to his father. "This has been overwhelming and extremely difficult," he wrote on Instagram. "Hearing so many kinds words and stories about my dad's life, interactions and experiences with everyone has been incredible and comforting. My dad was the most incredible person I've ever known and will always be my hero. He was the most kind, loving and amazing father anybody could ask for. "I spent a lot of time with him the past few years after moving back to Florida to be closer to him and I am so grateful for those memories. They are the best moments in my life. I would do anything to have him back, but I know now that he will always be watching over me. I will always remember the lessons and advice he gave me and carry on in a way that I know would make him proud. "Thank you for being the best dad in the world and thank you for being my best friend. I love you so much Big Dog and I will miss you forever." Nick is the son of the "Hulkster" and his ex-wife Linda, who also share a daughter, Brooke. Hulk and Linda Hogan filed for divorce in 2007.
