Assam govt comes up with new Mahatma Gandhi Statue and clock tower amid controversy
The Assam government's installation of a new Mahatma Gandhi statue and clock tower in Doomdooma, Tinsukia district, followed controversy over the removal of the old statue. Opposition Congress members, including Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi, criticized the move, alleging disrespect towards the Father of the Nation.
AP Guwahati: Amidst doubts from several quarters, Assam government has come up with a clock tower and mint fresh statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Assam's Doomdooma town in Tinsukia district. Earlier removal of statue has snowballed in a major controversy with opposition Congress protesting the move and alleging that this was disrespect by BJP to the father of the Nation. Mahatma's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi had scaled up the matter to Assam chief minister. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reacting to a post by Mahatma's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi had written on X: 'I am not aware of this decision taken by the district administration. Let me verify the facts.' The chief minister also maintained that Assam owes much to Mahatma Gandhi. "He stood firmly with Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi when the Congress party led by Nehru wanted to include Assam in Pakistan under the Grouping Plan," Sarma had stated on the microblogging site.
Tushar Gandhi wrote, 'Not surprising that the BJP government in Assam decided to replace Bapu's statue with a clock tower in Dibrugarh. Their slavish colonial hangover persists.' The 60-year-old statue was removed as part Doom Doom's makeover project which included building a clock tower and replacing the old statue with another statue. Large people turned out to witness the installations and inauguration of the clock tower on Wednesday. Officials in Municipal Board, 'The statue necessitated replacement as one side of the spectacles of the statue was damaged and there were a couple of damages that have crept in the statue over the years. The face of the statue was facing the old AT Raad which is no longer the entry point of Doom Dooma town.' Assam minister for Labour and Doomdooma MLA Rupesh Gowala said, 'We had assured a new and taller statue of the Father of the Nation would be erected at the same site and today we have done so. This was our commitment to the people, and we have fulfilled the same.' Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah laid the foundation stone of the project before the 2024 Lok Sabha election. When the contractor had begun the work a couple, former MLA of Doomdooma and Congress leader Durga Bhumij along with some Congressmen arrived at the site and opposed the removal of the statue of Gandhi and building a clock tower there. Bhumij had alleged that the BJP never paid due respect to Gandhi. Instead, it always gave respect to Nathuram Godse. At a time when Gandhi's statue was set up in as many as 80 countries around the world, the Board is going to build a clock tower by removing the statue of the Father of the Nation.'

‘Old rhetoric': Opposition hits back at Modi's I-Day speech
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of filling constitutional bodies with 'people of its ideology', and claimed that the ruling party can go to the extent of immorality to remain in power. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hoists the national flag during the 79th Independence Day celebration in New Delhi. (PTI) Hoisting the Tricolour in Indira Bhavan — the Congress's new central office — for the first time, Kharge further reminded the opposition party that the fight over alleged manipulation of voter lists is not for winning elections but to save democracy. 'The ruling party has filled the constitutional institutions with people of its ideology instead of merit. Whenever they wanted, they appointed anyone, and whenever they wanted, they took their resignation,' he said in his address. Kharge invoked the history of India's freedom movement and said the story of the freedom struggle is 'the story of our party'. Attacking the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the BJP over the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar, Kharge quoted BR Ambedkar, saying 'Franchise is one of the most fundamental things in a democracy. No person who is entitled to be brought into the electoral rolls… should be excluded merely as a result of prejudice…' 'But now the ruling party is ready to go to the extent of immorality to remain in power. Large scale irregularities are coming to the fore in the elections. In the name of SIR, the votes of the opposition are being openly cut. Those who are alive have been made dead,' Kharge said. Fellow party MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ₹1 lakh crore scheme aimed at creating 35 million jobs for the youth. 'Even after 11 years, Modi ji's same old rhetoric, same rehearsed figures. Last year, a promise of 1 crore internships from ₹1 lakh crore - this year, again a ₹1 lakh crore job scheme!' Gandhi said in a post on X, referring to the PM Internship Scheme announced during last year's Union Budget. 'What's the truth? In response to my question in Parliament, the government admitted - less than 10,000 internships. The stipend so low that 90% of youth refused it,' Gandhi said. 'Modi ji has no new ideas left. From this government, the youth will get not jobs, but only rhetoric.' Meanwhile, other Opposition leaders reacted sharply to PM Modi's reference to RSS in his Independence Day speech. Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav said, 'They should remember their very first session, they should remember that it is the seculars and socialists that will lead the way forward. The BJP itself had resolved to follow the path of secularism. The RSS' ideology does not align with secularism.' Similarly, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called the RSS reference as the 'most troubling element' of the PM's speech. 'A blatant breach of the spirit of a constitutional, secular republic. It is nothing but a desperate attempt to appease the organisation in the run-up to his 75th birthday next month. Decisively weakened after the events of June 4th, 2024, he is now at their complete mercy and reliant on Mohan Bhagwat's good offices for the extension of his tenure post-September.'

CJI: Building an equal India far from complete, but Murmu appointment step towards inclusivity
CJI BR Gavai (File photo/PTI) NEW DELHI: Chief Justice Bhushan Gavai, only the second from the Dalit community to head the judiciary, on Friday said the journey for building a just, equal and inclusive India is not yet complete though appointment of Droupadi Murmu , daughter of a poor tribal family, as President, illustrates the distance the country has covered towards achieving the goal. In his Independence Day speech in Supreme Court, the CJI said, "It is the destiny of India that the Santhal community, which was among the first to rise against the British in 1855, now has its daughter, President Droupadi Murmu, holding the highest constitutional office in the land." "Her journey from a small village in Odisha to Rashtrapati Bhavan is a testament to how far we have travelled. And yet, we must remember that the work of building a just, equal, and inclusive India is far from complete," he said after hoisting the tricolour at SC. He said judges of the constitutional courts have the responsibility to promote, protect, imbibe, and defend the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. He reiterated the judges of constitutional courts, HCs and SC, are co-equals and must bear the responsibility of giving "a broader, more purposive interpretation to the values of the Constitution". Only when the rights of the marginalised are protected will Mahatma Gandhi's Swaraj be real and Ambedkar's idea of democracy be complete, the CJI said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Hours after PM mentioned the contributions of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, CJI Gavai said, "From the hills of today's Jharkhand, where the Santhals lit the first flames of rebellion, to the forests of Chota Nagpur where Birsa Munda dreamed of dignity, from the humble school in Pune where Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule opened the doors of learning to the excluded, to the renunciation of a knighthood by Tagore in protest against injustice, from crafting of our Constitution by Babasaheb Ambedkar, to the moral compass of Mahatma Gandhi, our freedom was forged not in one place, nor by one people, but by courage of many, united by one dream of equal India. BJP: Public discourse today shaped by RSS ideology
NEW DELHI: As opposition parties slammed PM Narendra Modi over his remarks praising RSS in his independence day speech, BJP dismissed the criticism asserting that the Hindutva organisation's ideology is shaping India's public discourse today. BJP's IT department head Amit Malviya recalled that the country's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, had invited the RSS to join the Republic Day parade in 1963 and had called it an organisation of patriots. "As the RSS marks 100 years, it is fitting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentions it from the Red Fort," he said, reacting to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh's criticism. Malviya said, "India's public discourse today is shaped by RSS ideology, while the Congress is detached not only from the realities of our times but also from Nehru himself." In his speech, Modi had hailed 100 years of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a "very proud and glorious" journey of likely the "world's biggest NGO" and lauded all its volunteers for their dedicated service to the nation. Himself a RSS 'pracharak' for decades, Modi has praised the organisation earlier too and chose the occasion to highlight its journey since its foundation in 1925. RSS has been connected with BJP, and its functionaries work at key positions in the party organisation.
