Experts warn against viral hacks to keep pests out of homes this summer
Following on from last weekend's heatwave, temperatures in Scotland are continuing to warm up. However, with hot weather comes unwanted visitors. During the summer months many households grapple with the nuisance of pests invading their homes.
If ant, fly or even rat infestations go untreated, they can lead to health hazards, including E. coli and Salmonella. While there are many hacks to control pests ourselves, not all of them are effective. Experts are nowdebunking some of the common DIY pest control 'myths' to help you banish the bugs for good.
Tony King, owner of pest control company The Pied Piper, said: "Prevention is your most valuable do-it-yourself method. I always stress how important it is to seal up crevices and holes, as mice can slip into dime-sized holes and rats can slip into holes that are the size of a 20p coin.
Steel wool combined with caulk or foam sealant is great to work with when sealing these gaps up, like around pipes on sinks, in utility closets, or in the basement. It's also a good idea to store all of your food from the pantry in air-tight containers, like rice, pasta, cereal, and even pet food. Eliminating the food sources is merely half the battle.'
Pest Control Hacks that don't work
Using Peppermint or Eucalyptus Oil to repel insects or rodents
Article continues below
If you're out of mouse traps or don't want to call an expert, you might be tempted to use peppermint or eucalyptus oil to keep mice away. While it's true that some pests don't like strong smells, natural oils aren't a long-term solution, and they'll often just find another way into your home.
Using bucket traps or sticky boards to kill rodents
Tony said: "With mice, do-it-yourself traps like bucket traps or sticky boards are a tempting option. But if you're not able to catch a single mouse, such methods barely scratch the surface.
"Rats are clever, typically suspicious of foreign objects, and sticky traps can result in prolonged suffering without addressing the root issue. An outbreak of full scale requires exclusion work, sealing entry points, and careful baiting methods that most do-it-yourself kits cannot offer.'

Using white vinegar or a mixture of lemon juice and water to keep ants away
While it's true that acidic chemicals such as vinegar and lemon juice will kill or deter ant pheromone trails, this won't affect their nests or colonies as they often linger in walls or under building foundations.
Spraying vinegar on countertops or windows and hanging bags of water to repel flies
Flies often buzz around food and our kitchen bins, and fruit flies love food scraps in drains. Some people try spraying white vinegar on the counter in an attempt to attract and then trap flies, but it isn't enough. Another common hack is hanging bags of water to repel flies, but there are no proven beneficial effects of this.
Sprinkling baking soda on mattresses or rubbing alcohol on a bedframe to repel bed bugs
If you're experiencing a bedbug infestation, you might be tempted to use common DIY tricks like sprinkling baking soda on mattresses to dehydrate them or using rubbing alcohol, but these are not reliable solutions. While baking soda's dehydrating properties could kill a bedbug, it won't affect the colony, nor will rubbing alcohol.
Josh Clarke, from the London waste removal experts Clear It Waste, said adequately securing garbage is key if you have a pest infestation or suspect one.

Fire crews battle two blazes in East Lothian feared to be started deliberately
Dramatic pictures from the scenes show fields ablaze in East Lothian. Firefighters were called to tackle two separate blazes in East Lothian on Wednesday night, prompting a major response from emergency services. The first fire broke out shortly after 8pm in a large grassy field near Clark Avenue in Musselburgh. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) dispatched six appliances and around 30 firefighters to the scene after receiving reports of the blaze at 8.10pm. Dramatic scenes unfolded as flames tore through the dry grassland, lighting up the evening sky, reports EdinburghLive. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and crews managed to bring the fire under control. However, while firefighters were extinguishing the Musselburgh blaze, a second fire was reported just 10 minutes later in Tranent, around eight miles away. This time, hay bales were alight in the Smith Wynd area, with one fire appliance sent to the scene at 8.20pm. A local resident took to social media to share concerns about the fire being suspicious, writing: ' Must be deliberate as hay bales don't just self-combust.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! An SFRS spokesperson said: 'We were first alerted to the incident near Clark Avenue in Musselburgh at 8.10pm. Six fire appliances attended the scene and the fire has since been extinguished. 'Crews are also currently dealing with a second outdoor fire in the Smith Wynd area of Tranent. We were made aware of this at 8.20pm and have one appliance in attendance. There are no reports of any casualties.' The incidents come amid a period of dry weather, with fire services continuing to urge the public to be cautious when outdoors.

King Charles thanks families for sacrifices during visits to Scots RAF base
"On behalf of the nation, I can only offer all the families my heartfelt thanks for the sacrifices you make and the strength you provide." The King has visited Scotland's main RAF base to re-present a squadron standard to a unit there and thank families for their sacrifices. Charles visited RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, northern Scotland, on Wednesday, to attend the stand-up parade for Number 42 (Torpedo Bomber) Squadron. He also watched a flypast of two Typhoon bombers and a P-8A Poseidon aircraft, one of nine stationed at the only RAF main operating base in Scotland. RAF Lossiemouth is one of two quick reaction alert stations which protect the UK airspace, and the King met families including those of servicepeople based in Cyprus and Poland, where they are defending Nato's eastern borders. The King watched a parade including a brass band which played God Save the King twice, and gave a speech where he acknowledged the proximity of VJ Day on August 15 and thanked families for their 'encouragement and understanding' which he said was critical to the success of the air force. He said: 'With just a week until VJ Day, it is a fitting moment to recall that your aviators flew throughout the Burma Campaign in their Blenheim Bombers and Republic Thunderbolts.' Bagpipers greeted Charles as he arrived by helicopter for a private meeting with RAF leaders. And he watched a parade and re-presented a squadron standard which had previously been blessed by a vicar who prayed for the military and their families as well as the monarch. The King said: "Today, we also recognise the vital role played by your families and friends, some of whom I am delighted to see can join us today. "Their unwavering support is the foundation upon which this squadron's success is built. It is their encouragement and understanding that enable you all to dedicate yourselves so fully to your duties. On behalf of the nation, I can only offer all the families my heartfelt thanks for the sacrifices you make and the strength you provide." He praised the 'dedication, skill and professionalism' of staff, and added: "The squadron's work not only ensures the operational readiness of the Royal Air Force, but also strengthens our bonds with our Nato partners whom you train, including Canada and Norway. "By providing world-leading training to our allies, you contribute to a shared commitment to peace, security and co-operation across the globe." He also acknowledged his own links to the region, and said RAF Lossiemouth is "the beating heart of the United Kingdom's long-range maritime patrol aircraft capability." He added it was also "and an air station at the end of whose runway my old school, Gordonstoun, is situated" and continued: "In the 1960s, it was the Royal Navy's Buccaneer aircraft that took off and landed over us and, as part of the Cadet Corps, we regularly used to train or be trained by personnel on the station." The King was given a tour of the squadron buildings and the Poseidon hangar, which houses nine P-8A Poseidon maritime reconnaissance aircrafts which are equipped with weapons systems for anti-submarine warfare as well as surveillance and search and rescue missions. Charles was given a tour of one multi-role maritime patrol aircraft and met the crew, who showed him cutting-edge technology to detect, identify and monitor targets, which will be rolled out to Norway, Canada and Germany later this year. He toured the plane which has a wingspan of 123ft, is 129ft in length and stands 42ft 9in tall. It can also carry sonobuoys to search for enemy submarines and can be armed with torpedoes if required. The King met members from the Typhoon air wing, senior leadership and representatives from the wider community, including children from the Airplay Youth support programme and their families, who live on, or near, RAF Lossiemouth. He also met representatives from community projects including support for families of deployed service personnel, and a community group which is planting Christmas trees in sand dunes at Lossiemouth Beach. A little girl presented the King with a bunch of handpicked flowers and he was given a glass holder made from timber from an old bridge on Lossiemouth beach. Schoolchildren waved Union flags as they met the King before he left in a BMW. Officer commanding training Sergeant Simon Bracknell said: "It is a really proud day for everyone involved, they worked really hard, even with the storm 24 hours ago with 80mph winds. The standard that we have marks the squadron's battle history. For the King to present it is really special."
