Ford Recalls Nearly 500,000 Vehicles, See If Yours Is Affected
Yet another recall from the Blue Oval According to a new report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration dated May 27, 2025, Detroit-based automaker Ford is issuing a recall affecting nearly half a million older iterations of its popular Explorer family SUV due to a potentially hazardous defect involving the vehicle and those around it on the road. The massive recall covers 492,145 Ford Explorers produced between June 11, 2015, and April 19, 2017, in the 2016 and 2017 model years. The NHTSA said in its report that the 'driver and front passenger door B-pillar trim appliques' (the little pieces of black plastic above the front driver and passenger side door handles) might detach from the vehicle while driving, which can be a hazard for other road users and increase the risk of a crash. 2016 Ford Explorer — Source: Jeremy Korzeniewski According to the NHTSA, drivers of affected vehicles may recognize the problem if they see the B-pillar trim separating from the rest of the front doors when they enter and exit the vehicle, or notice any rattling or wind noise from the B-pillar areas when they drive. What caused this issue? The NHTSA says that the root of the cause may have resulted from a combination of factors, including a design change that added a foam donut to the adhesive side of the B-pillar panel which increased outward reaction force on the part, as well as, 'inconsistent usage of hand rollers used to ensure complete adhesion of the part to door sheet metal during installation at the vehicle assembly plant.' The Federal agency's report reveals that the Ford Motor Co. first recognized the problem as far back as July 4, 2019, when it published a technical service bulletin to direct dealers on how to repair loose driver side B-pillar trim appliques on Explorers due to potential lack of adhesive, which at the time, it did not consider it an 'unreasonable risk to safety.' This insight emerged from an in-depth investigation in which engineers scrutinized doors sourced from local scrap yards at Ford's Central Labs. They also delved into a collection of photographs depicting parts that were reported to have detached, focusing on the specifics of each claim. As of April 7, 2025, Ford had recorded 1,482 warranty claims linked to the troubling occurrence, affecting vehicles sold in the U.S. market between December 4, 2015, and February 10, 2025. The company said that there have been no reported accidents or injuries associated with this particular defect. Ford dealers have already been notified of the issue, and owners can expect to receive a letter in the mail starting June 9. 2017 Ford Explorer — Source: Ford Final thoughts This recall comes on the same day another recall was announced due to loose or dislodged passenger airbag indicators affecting 63,898 units of the 2025 Ford Maverick. In another recall published this week, Ford announced that 1.1 million vehicles could be affected by a software glitch that could render the rearview cameras inoperable. It seems like Ford just can't escape the recall bug. About the Author James Ochoa View Profile

Car Deal of the Day: Honda Jazz hybrid is music to our ears at just £200 per month
Super-frugal hybrid powertrain Spacious interior; Magic Seats Only £200.03 a month We'll put our neck on the line here and say the Honda Jazz is the most sensible supermini money can buy. Trouble is, its efficient hybrid engine, smart interior, upmarket fit-and-finish and respectable character don't come cheap. Until now, that is. Advertisement - Article continues below Scouring the Auto Express Find a Car service, we found is offering the judicious Jazz for three pence more than £200 a month, finally placing it at a similar level to the Renault Clio, Skoda Fabia and Volkswagen Polo. This two-year deal requires a £2,750.33 initial payment, while mileage is capped at 5,000 a year. This can be revised up to 8,000 a year for just under £14.50 a month, though. At the heart of the Jazz is its super-frugal hybrid powertrain. It mates a 1.5-litre petrol engine to two electric motors, meaning it can travel further on electric power than a lot of its rivals. Fuel economy is, unsurprisingly, impressive at over 62mpg, and 120bhp keeps the car feeling quick and zippy, particularly around town. Over the years, every generation of the Jazz has embarrassed its rivals by having more interior space. The same is true of the current car – its tall windows mean visibility is excellent, and the interior is packed with numerous cubbyholes. The pièce de résistance, though, are the famous Magic Seats, which allow the rear seat bases to fold up so you can carry awkwardly shaped items with ease. For £200 a month, you might be expecting the entry-level model, but that's not the case. Here you'll be getting a Jazz in Advance spec, so things like heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless Apple CarPlay, a nine-inch touchscreen, and 16-inch alloys wheels all come as standard. The Car Deal of the Day selections we make are taken from our own Auto Express Find A Car deals service, which includes the best current offers from car dealers and leasing companies around the UK. Terms and conditions apply, while prices and offers are subject to change and limited availability. If this deal expires, you can find more top Honda Jazz leasing offers from leading providers on our Honda Jazz hub page. Auto companies face shortages due to China's rare earth restrictions
June 5 (Reuters) - Automakers and their suppliers are facing shortages due to restrictions on Chinese exports of rare earths, minerals and magnets, an issue that has forced some to shut down production of certain models. Rare earth magnets are used in motors that run electric vehicles and other car parts such as windows and audio speakers. These companies have paused production or warned shortages were affecting their supply chains: ** Ford (F.N), opens new tab shut down production of its Explorer SUV at its Chicago plant for a week in May because of the rare earths shortage. ** Suzuki Motor (7269.T), opens new tab suspended production of its flagship Swift subcompact from May 26, citing a shortage of components. It expects a partial restart on June 13, with full resumption after June 16. Two people familiar with the matter said the suspension was due to China's restrictions. Suzuki declined to comment on the reason. ** Several European auto supplier plants and production lines have been shut down because of a rare earth shortage, Europe's auto supplier association CLEPA said on June 4. ** Indian automaker Bajaj Auto ( opens new tab warned that any further delays in securing the supply of rare earth magnets from China could "seriously impact" EV production by July. ** Auto parts maker Bosch said bottlenecks in the supply of rare earths were affecting its suppliers, who had to furnish a lot of detailed information to get export licences. ** BMW ( opens new tab said a part of its supplier network was affected by the shortage, but that its own plants were running as normal. ** Maruti Suzuki ( opens new tab India's top-selling carmaker, said there was no immediate impact, and that it was in talks with the government on the matter. ** German auto supplier ZF said it sees the effect of a rare earths shortage on some of its suppliers, although it does not procure the raw materials itself.
