Among them were a hostel block for boys and girls at the Commerce College in the same sector, a 2,500 KW floating solar power plant at Water Works in Sector 39, the extension block of Govt Senior Secondary School in Kajheri, and the IT block at the Post Graduate Govt College in Sector 46. In addition, the MoS (home affairs) virtually laid the foundation for the construction of 144 residential units in the Chandigarh Armed Police Complex at Dhanas.
Kumar described Chandigarh as a true embodiment of the spirit of "Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat." He commended the city's progress in development, transparency, and security, noting that the implementation of Smart City projects, road and public transport modernisation, digital governance, ease-of-living initiatives, and Green India and Swachh Bharat missions brought tangible improvements to citizens' lives.
He underscored that Chandigarh holds the distinction of being the first in the country to fully implement the three new legal frameworks — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The city's pioneering adoption of these new criminal, civil, and evidence laws marks a historic step toward strengthening citizen protection and justice delivery.
He said, "The projects inaugurated and foundation stones laid today reflect not only Chandigarh's development but also the broader national vision and commitment under the principle of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas'".

He emphasised that these initiatives will enhance educational quality, safety, and infrastructure, empower youth with technology skills through the new IT block, and provide better living conditions for police personnel through the housing project in Dhanas.
Looking ahead to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, Bandi Sanjay Kumar expressed confidence that India will emerge as the world's leading economic power. As part of this mission, Chandigarh will be developed as a knowledge hub, wellness city, and a model of smart governance. He congratulated all officials, planners, engineers, workers, and citizens of UT Chandigarh for their dedication and initiative toward this transformation.

‘Super emergency, Hitlerian assault on Indian democracy': Mamata slams 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday condemned the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, labelling it 'as something more than a super-Emergency' and a 'Hitlerian assault on the very soul of Indian democracy'. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, which seeks to remove any central or state minister who faces allegations of corruption or serious offences and has been detained for at least 30 days. The Bill will amend Article 75 of the Constitution, which primarily deals with the appointment and responsibilities of the Council of Ministers, including the Prime Minister. 'I condemn the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, proposed to be tabled by the Government of India today. I condemn it as a step towards something that is more than a super-Emergency, a step to end the democratic era of India forever. This draconian step comes as a death knell for democracy and federalism in India,' Mamata Banerjee posted on X. 'To suppress the voting rights of the Indian citizens in the name of Special Intensive Revision (SIR), this is another super-draconian step by the Centre now,' she said. 'This Bill now wants to finish the Independence of our Judiciary. What we are witnessing is unprecedented – the Bill is nothing short of a Hitlerian assault on the very soul of Indian democracy. The Bill seeks to strip the judiciary of its Constitutional role – to take away the power of Courts to adjudicate on matters that lie at the very heart of justice and federal balance,' she stated. 'This is not reform. This is regression… This is how authoritarian regimes, even fascist ones in history, consolidated power. It reeks of the very mindset that the world once condemned in the darkest chapters of the 20th century,' Banerjee added. The Chief Minister further wrote, 'To weaken the Courts is to weaken the people. To deny them the right to seek justice is to deny them democracy itself. The Bill strikes at the basic structure of the Constitution – federalism, separation of powers, and judicial review – principles that even Parliament cannot override. If allowed to pass, it will be a death warrant for Constitutional governance in India,' she wrote, 'We must resist this dangerous overreach.' 'The Bill seeks to empower the Union to intrude upon the mandate of the people, handing sweeping powers to unelected authorities (ED, CBI – whom the Supreme Court has described as 'caged parrots') to interfere in the functioning of elected State governments. It is a step to empower the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister in a sinister manner at the expense of the basic principles of our Constitution,' wrote Banerjee. 'The Bill must be resisted at any cost! Democracy must be saved at this moment! The people will not forgive any attempt to take away their Courts, their rights, and their democracy,' she added. Notably, a number of West Bengal cabinet ministers, including former education and industries minister Partha Chatterjee (in the school jobs scam) and Jyotipriyo Mullick, former food minister (in the ration scam), were arrested by central agencies and jailed for a prolonged period of time.

Bihar poll officials reject Rahul Gandhi's claims on voter deletion

Election authorities in Bihar on Tuesday refuted allegations by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who shared videos on X of two villagers — Subodh Kumar of Nawada and Ranju Devi of Rohtas — claiming that their names were deleted during the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the poll-bound state. (Photo from X) Gandhi highlighted their cases during his ongoing state-wide 'Voter Adhikar Yatra', which began on August 17. Nawada district magistrate Ravi Prakash, in a post on X, called Kumar's allegation 'baseless and untrue', stating that his name was never recorded in the electoral roll. In Gandhi's video, Kumar, a farmer, alleged that his name was struck off the electoral rolls despite him having voted in the 2025 Lok Sabha elections, where he also acted as a polling agent. Prakash clarified that Kumar's name did not feature in the Warisaliganj constituency's rolls — in the 2024 summary revision, the 2025 supplementary list, or the August 1 draft. While other family members were transferred between polling stations 9 and 10, Kumar's name was absent throughout. He added that Kumar's name never appeared in the deleted electors' list displayed at booths under Supreme Court orders. Although present when the booth-level officer affixed the list, Kumar did not file any objection or Form-6 request despite being asked to do so. 'If he submits Form-6 with the required declaration, his name will be included as per rules,' Prakash said. Meanwhile, the electoral registration officer of Rohtas' 207-Chenari constituency rejected claims by Ranju Devi, who alleged in Gandhi's video that her family's names were deleted from the draft rolls published on August 1. The officer's inquiry confirmed that eight family members were listed at booths 342 and 343. Later, television channels showed Devi admitting she had been misinformed by her ward secretary, who wrongly told her their names were missing from the voter list during the SIR exercise.

Video: Opposition tears copies of 3 Constitutional Bills, throws them at Amit Shah

The Opposition MPs on Wednesday 20 August tore copies of the three constitutional bills introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha. The Bills were then thrown towards the BJP MP in Lok Sabha. Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday introduced three bills in Lok Sabha, including a Constitution Amendment bill, which seeks to remove the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers who are facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and have been detained for 30 consecutive days. Shah introduced the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The government introduced three pieces of legislation: The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025 The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025 The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 Together, these bills provide a legal framework for the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and ministers if they are arrested and detained on serious charges punishable by at least five years' imprisonment. Failure to resign within 30 days of custody would result in automatic disqualification. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the opposition's behaviour in Lok Sabha, saying MPs should not 'insult democracy' by tearing copies of legislation. 'The public sends us to work, does the opposition come to create a ruckus? The people of the country will not forgive those who disrespect democracy. MPs should contribute in debates and discussions,' Rijiju asserted. Home Minister Amit Shah, introducing the bills, argued that constitutional morality and public trust demanded such provisions. According to the government, allowing leaders accused of serious crimes to remain in power weakens governance and damages India's democratic credibility.
