Abandoned gas station undergoes stunning transformation into next-gen charging hub: 'Vital to the region's journey'
"EV drivers need ultrarapid charging hubs along busy routes and in the hearts of communities, and this site serves both," Be.EV CEO Asif Ghafoor told CleanTechnica. "With over 26,000 vehicles passing daily, it's ideally placed to serve commuters looking to charge their vehicles while grabbing a coffee."
The company operates a network of over 800 charging bays in the U.K., with that number set to double by the end of this year. This particular site is part of an effort to reach areas that have been underserved thus far in the public charger rollout.
"With the number of EV drivers in Greater Manchester expected to exceed 150,000 by 2038, developments like the Manchester Charging Oasis are vital to the region's journey toward net zero," Ghafoor explained.
Not only will the station help provide fuel and stability for EV drivers, but it will help the broader local economy, too. With more drivers coming through the area more regularly, experts estimate that spending at nearby establishments will increase by up to 3%, per CleanTechnica.
The site was thoroughly decontaminated to prepare it for its new function, and all of its charging ports will be 100% powered by clean and renewable energy. It's a fitting 180-degree pivot from its original petrol-pumping function, considering that transitioning to EVs — both at a consumer and a commercial level — is a vital part of helping the country meet its goals of carbon neutrality by 2050.
"There's real momentum behind the shift to cleaner transport — a clear sign we're approaching mass-market adoption," Ghafoor said. "It's a promising outlook for both local infrastructure and the broader net-zero transition."
The Manchester Charging Oasis should open this summer. It will be open 24/7, and drivers will be able to add up to 325 miles of range in just a 20-minute stop.

JERA and BP launch JERA Nex bp joint venture
Japanese energy company JERA and BP have completed the establishment of JERA Nex bp, a new 50:50-owned joint venture (JV), dedicated to the development and operation of offshore wind projects. The newly established company will have a net potential generating capacity of 13GW across its portfolio. This includes 1GW of installed net generating capacity, a development pipeline of 7.5GW and an additional secured leases amounting to 4.5GW. JERA and BP announced plans to establish the JV in December 2024. It will utilise both partners' engineering expertise, technical skills in project management and procurement capabilities, as well as strong industry relationships. The partnership combines JERA's expertise in delivering safe project operations with BP's extensive experience in the offshore energy sector. ‘Momentum growing' in UK plum industry with bumper crop, says grower
The UK plum industry has begun to pull out of a 'decades-long decline' with a bumper crop reported this year, a grower has said. Plum production in the UK hit its peak in 1987 with 28,900 tonnes being produced that year, according to Defra figures. Due to lower yields and cheaper imports, the industry then declined, hitting its lowest point in 2008 with total production of just 2,500 tonnes. Since then, growers have adjusted to finding new plum varieties and modern farming systems, and the production this summer is set to be the biggest in three years, according to fruit grower WB Chambers, based in Maidstone, Kent. Its commercial director James Miller said: 'The UK plum industry has now started to pull out of a decades-long decline and the quality of the fruit coming through right now, and the yield, is the best we've seen for ages. 'There is a real momentum growing within the plum industry again.' The UK's plum production area fell from 2,400 hectares in 1985 to 800 hectares in 2017 as growers turned to fruits with higher profitability. Mr Miller added: 'As cheaper imports flooded the market and plum production became less profitable, interest in growing the fruit dwindled. 'But we have now invested in new root stocks as well as modern farming systems such as automatic minimal irrigation and soil moisture analysis.' WB Chambers said the new varieties as well as this year's perfect growing conditions means it has doubled its production from 150 tonnes in 2024 to 300 tonnes this summer. Tesco fruit category buying manager Simon Reeves said: 'We are hearing similar reports from all our growers and main plum supplier that this has been the best harvest for about three years. 'The quality of the British-grown plums arriving at our stores across the UK right now is easily the best we've seen for several years – plump, juicy and sweet.' The grower also said new varieties of plum have a better shelf life that will help cut down on wastage.

Do not let LGBT veterans scheme to ‘become damaged', 45 MPs urge Healey
The Defence Secretary cannot let a payment scheme for LGBT veterans 'become damaged', 45 MPs have said, amid fears some claimants have 'struggled immensely' to receive their money. In a letter to John Healey, the cross-party MPs warned that some veterans facing financial crisis are 'suffering from severe mental health issues' without support 'from the outset'. LGBT veterans who faced mistreatment, including dismissal and bullying, because of their sexuality between July 1967 and January 2000 can make a claim through a financial recognition scheme worth £75 million. Liberal Democrat MP Ben Maguire, who signed the letter, accused the Government of 'now failing the very veterans they pledged to support'. The North Cornwall MP said: 'The slow pace of delivery is unacceptable and causing avoidable distress. 'Many of these LGBT veterans have already endured lifetimes of shame, stigma and rejection.' Mr Maguire added: 'These veterans should not have to suffer all over again because of bureaucratic delays. 'That's why I'm very pleased to have colleagues from right across Parliament join me in demanding faster payments, and clearer transparency, for MPs and the public.' The letter has 46 backers in total, including the Liberal Democrats' defence spokeswoman Helen Maguire, several Labour and Plaid Cymru MPs, and Stonewall charity co-founder Lord Cashman. Dame Caroline Dinenage, the Conservative MP for Gosport who also signed the letter, told the PA news agency that LGBT veterans had faced an 'injustice that's gone on for far too long'. The MPs have requested that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) 'widens the criteria for prioritisation to include all those in financial crisis', to applicants 'who are in most need of a swift decision suffering from financial crisis – not just when they are in ongoing bankruptcy proceedings in court'. Fast-tracked applicants under the existing scheme include claimants who are facing bankruptcy or having their home repossessed through a court process. 'Many of these veterans who are in financial crisis, but are not yet in the court system, are still suffering from severe mental health issues because of a lack of financial support provided by the redress scheme from the outset,' the MPs warned. They suggested that instead of making veterans who were dismissed or administratively discharged wait for their full award, 'by making an immediate payment of £50,000 to all these veterans who qualify, the MoD can alleviate the pressure and anger being felt by this community and would provide a quick win for the MoD' before a panel considers whether to issue further payouts on a case-by-case basis. 'These veterans have struggled immensely to progress their claims, and after years of waiting for signs of hope are still waiting for settlement and closure,' the MPs added. 'We cannot allow this process to become damaged in the same way as other compensation schemes have.'
