2025 UFL MVP Power Rankings: Jordan Ta'amu, Bryce Perkins on top after Week 5
Bryce Perkins has guided the Michigan Panthers to a 3-2 mark, tied atop the USFL Conference, while Jordan Ta'amu has the DC Defenders sitting at 4-1, atop the XFL Conference.

5. St. Louis Battlehawks RB Jacob Saylors
Week 5 stat line: 73 total yards on 14 touchesWeek 5 result: 32-27 win vs. Michigan
While his production has dipped in recent weeks, Saylors remains one of the most prolific rushers and receivers in the league with 255 rushing yards and 202 receiving yards through the first half of the season. He ranks in the top 10 of each category.
Saylors is tied for first place with Arlington Renegades tailback DeVeon Smith for rushing TDs this season with four and ranks just behind Arlington tailback Kalen Ballage in rushing yards per game at 51. Ballage, who leads the league in rushing with 276 yards, is inching closer toward becoming an MVP candidate himself.
4. Houston Roughnecks QB Jalan McClendon
Week 5 stat line: 22-of-31 for 171 passing yardsWeek 5 result: 27-3 win at San Antonio
The Roughnecks won just once in 2024. In 2025, they doubled that tally through the first half of the season and put themselves within striking distance of a playoff spot in the USFL Conference after settling on McClendon as their starting QB.
While his numbers weren't eye-popping in Week 5, McClendon's ability to throw the ball downfield and his cool demeanor have changed the attitude of an offense that had been stagnant.
Now, with wideout Justin Hall at his disposal, McClendon has an opportunity to help the Roughnecks reach the playoffs for the first time in a wide-open USFL Conference. Houston is just a game back of first place.
3. Arlington Renegades QB Luis Perez
Week 5 stat line: 22-of-33 for 268 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INTWeek 5 result: 37-33 loss vs. D.C.
Perez's play has been steady throughout the season. He is the only player to see more than 100 of his passes end in completions while being just one of two players with a completion percentage above 70% in the league.
Given the balance the Renegade offense has shown with the league's most prolific rusher and its second-most prolific passer, Perez's performance is that much more impressive.
2. Michigan Panthers QB Bryce Perkins
Week 5 stat line: 21-of-25 for 235 passing yards, 2 TDsWeek 5 result: 32-27 loss at St. Louis
Perkins played his best game of the season in Week 5, and that's saying something for a player who was the two-time Offensive Player of the Week heading into an elite passing performance against the Battlehawks. The Panthers are still tied for first place in the USFL Conference and look like the favorite to win it.
Had Perkins been Michigan's Day 1 starter, it's fair to ask if his numbers would be better. He leads the league in completion percentage at 72.3%, owns a 3-to-1 TD-to-INT ratio and has accounted for five total TDs this season.
1. DC Defenders QB Jordan Ta'amu
Week 5 stat line: 23-of-46 passing for 308 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INTWeek 5 result: 37-33 win at Arlington
Over the last two weeks, no player has been more prolific than Ta'amu. He averaged more than 300 passing yards per game during this recent stretch, moved the Defenders to 4-1 and has played his best ball against two teams expected to compete for the second spot in the XFL Conference title game behind D.C.
Ta'amu leads the UFL in passing TDs (nine) and total TDs (11) and is the only player in the league to pass for more than 1,000 yards through five games (1,213). If the MVP is awarded to the best player on the best team, it's difficult to argue how anyone could unseat Ta'amu.

The groin injury that kept Caitlin Clark out of the TD Garden matchup in July still had her sidelined a month later. Meanwhile, Aari McDonald , who was signed on a hardship contract because of Clark's injury, broke a bone in her right foot earlier this month, bringing her season to an end. Sydney Colson tore her ACL in the same game, ending her season, too. Then Sunday, Sophie Cunningham had to be helped off the floor after suffering a right knee injury. Somehow, the Fever still have the sixth-best record in the league. The same way, they somehow climbed out of a 21-point hole and dashed out of Connecticut with a 99-93 win. Mitchell scored 38 points, 34 in the second half. It was her second 30-point game this month and fourth of the season. Advertisement The Fever are hanging on by a thread, and that thread is Mitchell. 'I don't even think there are any words,' forward Aliyah Boston said. 'When you look at Kelsey's play and you look at what she means to this squad, coming out of that second half and going off the way that she did, I think it kind of speaks for her case in general. Advertisement 'She comes out, she defends, she scores the ball, she plays 40 minutes a game, and she still consistently puts up these numbers. I feel like, if she's not MVP, shoot.' As recently as two weeks ago, any MVP conversations would have been short. Napheesa Collier was far and away the best player in the league, anchoring the best team in the league on both sides of the floor. But a right ankle injury has had her sidelined for the past two weeks with no timetable for a return beyond 'before the end of the season.' She's missed four games over that span and seven overall, raising the question of how many games a player can miss and still be the league's MVP, and opening the door for other possibilities. Some of those possibilities are familiar names. Three-time MVP A'ja Wilson , coincidentally, has gone on a tear while Collier has been sidelined, and Wilson's Aces are back among the top teams in the league. Alyssa Thomas , the 2023 runner-up, has been a force all season, nearly averaging a triple-double (16.2 points, 8.6 rebounds, 9.1 assists). Allisha Gray is having the best season of her career (averaging 18.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists) and has the Dream in second place. Mitchell might not be the conventional MVP candidate, but there's a case to be made. There's no criteria for MVP, but the winners generally fit a certain mold. For one, they don't miss many games. When Jonquel Jones won the award in 2021, she missed five games, the most an MVP ever sat out. Often, MVPs come from the best teams in the league. Twelve of the 28 MVPs were on the team with the best regular-season record, and eight were on the No. 2 team. Lauren Jackson , however, was an exception in 2007, when she won it on a Storm team that went 17-17. She also averaged 23.7 points and 9.7 rebounds, and already had an MVP trophy from 2003. Advertisement Scoring can vary. Wilson's 2024 season was undeniable. She averaged 26.9 points while pulling down 11.9 rebounds per game. But in 2011, Tamika Catchings won it while averaging just 15.5 points for a first-place Fever team. The bulk of the WNBA's MVPs averaged between 17 and 24 points per game. Quietly, Mitchell has built an MVP résumé this season. She's tied for third in the league in scoring behind Collier and Wilson, and the Fever have needed every bit of it with Clark out. They're 8-5 with Clark and 11-11 without her. If Clark returns this season, she'll rejoin a team still in the thick of the playoff race, thanks in no small part to Mitchell. Mitchell would be an MVP outlier, but oddly enough because of how many games she's missed, so would Collier. Is Mitchell a long shot? Maybe. Is she worth considering? Sure. Has it crossed her mind? 'I haven't even thought about that,' she said. Who's hooping? Jewell Loyd, Las Vegas Aces: Loyd had made 213 consecutive starts dating to 2019, before going to the bench last month. Ten games into her new role, she's finally looking comfortable, averaging 14.6 points with a 45.7/43.8/81.8 shooting line. Veronica Burton, Golden State Valkyries: The only 30-point triple-double in WNBA history belongs to Sabrina Ionescu, but Burton flirted with the achievement in a win last week over Washington. She put up 30 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists, going 10 for 13 from the floor, including 6 for 9 on 3-pointers. Advertisement Appointment viewing Phoenix Mercury at Las Vegas Aces, Thursday, 10 p.m.: The Aces have won nine of their last 12 and are riding a seven-game streak. The Mercury, on the other hand, have had a hard time beating the teams at the top. Of their 14 losses, nine have come against the Lynx, Liberty, and Dream. New York Liberty at Atlanta Dream, Saturday, 2 p.m.: The Dream dropped two of their first three meetings to the Liberty, and what stung about them both were the leads they let slip away. In June, they blew a 17-point, third-quarter lead. In July, they let a 19-point, second-quarter lead unravel. Former Eagles quarterback sees another potential career detour
Pencil in another setback for Kenny Pickett in what was once a promising career. You might think this is crazy to hear it now, but once upon a time, there were some sparse fantasies about what it might look like to see Joe Flacco in a Philadelphia Eagles jersey. You must understand the times and some of the backstory for that to make sense. He was a product of Voorhees Township, New Jersey. He finished his NCAA career with the Delaware Blue Hens (2005-07) following a stint with the Pittsburgh Panthers (2003-04). Oh, and by the way, he had helped lead the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl XLVII win. He also won MVP honors in the game. There never seemed to be any genuine interest expressed by the Eagles organization. Plus, Baltimore hung onto him for a while. Fans are fans for a reason, though. It's easy to see why some Philadelphia fans (not all of them) might have expressed interest, but the Eagles drafted Carson Wentz. They eventually won a Super Bowl (LII), and we strangely never discussed Joe Flacco as an Eagle ever again. That is, until he joined the Eagles for a brief spell in 2021. Joe Flacco beats out Kenny Pickett for the Cleveland Browns' starting QB job Flacco wasn't in Philadelphia long. He was signed on March 25, 2021. He was traded to the New York Jets on October 25 that same year. The Eagles played musical chairs with their backup QBs for a while, but in 2024, they added a local native. Kenny Pickett entered the NFL as a former Heisman Trophy finalist. He had enjoyed a successful run at the same Pitt program Flacco once played for. As a professional, he was drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers (2022), but they gave up early. In March 2024, he was dealt after requesting a trade when Pittsburgh added veteran Russell Wilson as their starter. Flacco started one game in Philadelphia, and he won it. That was a Week 17, 41-7 affair vs. the Dallas Cowboys. He earned a Super Bowl ring for his troubles as part of the 2024 Eagles roster. He was eventually traded to the Cleveland Browns for Dorian Thompson-Robinson and draft compensation. He found himself in competition with Joe Flacco for the Browns' starting QB position. Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders were also in the mix. It has been announced that Flacco has been named Cleveland's starting quarterback. That leaves Pickett to make sense of another career detour. The story isn't over. He may be traded at some point. For now, however, his journey is at a crossroads. One must ask if he is beginning to run short on chances. Then again, what are the chances of his reunion with Kellen Moore as part of the New Orleans Saints?

Former Eagles QB and MVP candidate faces an uncertain future entering the 2025 NFL season
Ex-Eagles quarterback, once an MVP candidate, is still searching for a new team with the NFL season nearing. It's impossible to tell the story of the 2017-18 Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles without discussing a near-MVP season by their young gunslinger. Carson Wentz seemed destined for stardom, both on the field and off. Former President Barack Obama had even coined the phrase 'Wentz Wagon' during a winning streak to begin his NFL career. It was the sophomore campaign that made the former second overall pick a legend. He rattled off 11 wins in the first 13 games of the season, but he suffered a knee injury to end his run in Week 14. Before leaving the field, however, he threw a TD pass, his fourth of the contest. That pass set an Eagles single-season record for TD tosses (33) and gave his team the lead on the scoreboard. It also serves as one of the most memorable moments of Wentz's Eagles tenure. It seemed he was on pace to win the MVP trophy, but things shifted very quickly. Philadelphia won the Super Bowl, with Nick Foles leading the charge as their starting quarterback. Carson Wentz remains unsigned with the NFL's regular season nearing Everyone knows how things ended in Philadelphia. Everyone is aware of how his career has progressed. He has been part of four different rosters over the past four seasons. Most recently, he served as Patrick Mahomes' backup, but they didn't retain him at the end of the season. Here we are, less than three weeks from the season opener, and Wentz is currently unsigned. He hasn't announced his retirement yet. He could still join a QB-needy team at some point. For now, however, his continuing NFL journey has put the brakes on. It's interesting to see how quickly things turn in pro football, but regardless of how anyone feels about the former Eagles QB, perhaps we can agree on one thing. It's hard to believe every NFL team has three quarterbacks who are better than Carson Wentz. Maybe that is true. Perhaps some of the negative perceptions about his personality have caught up with him. Whatever the case, he remains one of the most intriguing stories of the past decade of professional football.
