Telugu People should remain grateful to NTR: Somireddy
He spoke during the centenary celebrations of NTR organised in Sidney of Australia, the MLA said that it is highly impossible for any political party to emerge to power within a span of a few months, but NTR made it possible within 11 months of establishing TDP.
Recalling his long association with NTR since the formation of the party in 1983, Somireddy said that during anti-arrack movement was rampant in 1991 in Nellore district, NTR came to Nellore following the invitation of All Party Struggle Committee, and promised to impose total ban on liquor. As per the assurance, former CM NT Rama Rao implemented total ban after TDP came to power in 1994, even after knowing that it will cause huge loss.
The MLA said that NT Rama Rao was responsible for the construction of Telugu Ganga Project, introduction of kilo rice@ Rs 2, construction of pakka houses. He alleged that the YSRCP came to power in 2019 by promising liquor ban but it did liquor trade as Rs 10,000 crores liquor scam was witnessed during its five-year tenure.

COIMBATORE: A day after Chennai Corporation's sanitary workers were detained by police following their 13 days protest, sanitary workers in Coimbatore attempted to besiege Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation's main office in Town Hall on Thursday, pressing charter of demands including making their job permanent. The protesting sanitary workers were detained by the city police and removed from the place. The slew of demands by sanitary workers includes, making 5,000 daily wage sanitary workers job permanent, fixing the working hours as 7 am to 1 pm, implementing the minimum wage of Rs 770 per day, and giving compassionate ground appointment to the family members of deceased sanitary workers as announced in the DMK's election manifesto. "Out of 8254 sanitary workers in Coimbatore Corporation, 5544 workers have been kept under the contract list since 2010. They are supposed to be paid Rs 23,100 as a wage per month. But, the private contract firms which have the contract are providing below Rs 16,100 per month. If the workers take leave, wage will be deducted for the days. Against it, we staged a protest on May 5 and staged a seven-day strike from June 9, 2025. In the negotiation by the corporation, it had asked a time for 40 days but they failed to keep the assurance," said ER Tamil Nadu Selvam, general secretary of Tamil Nadu Annal Ambedkar Sanitary Workers Union. Due to the sanitary workers' protest announcement, a heavy police deployment has been made in front of the main office and several junctions to prevent their gatherings in the city. Meanwhile, the city police detained around 40 functionaries and workers of trade unions near the CCMC office when they were attempting to gather in frontt of the office. Unionists claimed that many sanitary workers were dispersed two km radius from the CCMC office by the police.

Three of Gujarat's model villages earned national recognition and their sarpanches were invited as special guests to the Independence Day celebrations in New Delhi on August 15, which will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The sarpanches of Bhimasar in Kutch, Akhod in Bharuch, and Sultanpur in Navsari - villages honoured as 'Model Villages of Rural Development' and 'ODF Plus Model Villages' - have redefined rural governance by blending urban-level facilities with community-led initiatives. Bhimasar's woman sarpanch, Daiben Humble, has transformed her village into a clean, green, and self-sustaining community with door-to-door waste collection, a full sewage system, and the 'Green Bhimasar Project', which encourages every family to plant 10 trees. She also developed the 200-acre 'Vraj Bhumi Farm' to grow fodder for cattle and generate local employment, and has won 13 national awards for her visionary leadership. In Sultanpur, sarpanch Shashikant Patel has strengthened both infrastructure and social welfare, introducing a Rs 5,000 grant for families on the birth of a girl child, rewarding households with the best kitchen gardens, and installing Braille signage in public toilets - the first such initiative in Gujarat. The village has achieved 100 per cent compliance with Swachh Bharat Mission norms. In Andhra Local Body By-Poll, Jagan Reddy's Big Defeat In Family Stronghold
Hyderabad: Jagan Mohan Reddy 's YSR Congress Party was routed in the Pulivendula zilla parishad territorial constituency, or ZPTC, by-poll Thursday. The ex-Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's candidate, Hemanth Reddy, was thumped by the ruling Telugu Desam Party's Latha Reddy by 6,035 votes. The YSRCP candidate, in fact, secured fewer than 700 votes and lost his election deposit. This is the first time in nearly three decades that an election was held for the Pulivendula ZPTC seat, which had previously been won unopposed by YSRCP candidates. The TDP has celebrated the win as Pulivendula celebrating "independence, just a day before Independence Day". A delighted S Savitha, the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, also put Jagan Reddy on notice, declaring the TDP will win his family stronghold in the 2029 Assembly election. The defeat has been made worse because the Pulivendula ZPTC falls within the Assembly constituency of the same name, which is a stronghold of the Chief Minister and his family. Mr Reddy has held the Pulivendula Assembly seat since 2014. Before that it was held by his father, YS Rajasekhara Reddy; his mother, YS Vijayammma; and other members of the family, including his uncle Y. S. Purushothama Reddy. Defeat in this prestige battle will come as a big blow for Jagan Reddy, who is also set to lose the Vontimitta ZPTC.
