7 Delhi cops ‘fail to intercept' dummy bomb during Independence Day mock drill, suspended
Drills are being conducted across the national capital to test security arrangements ahead of Independence Day, they said.
The authorities concerned will now review all security arrangements from scratch and implement an improved and revised plan, senior officers said. The seven policemen would also be subjected to a departmental inquiry, officers added.
The mock drill, which exposed the security lapse, was just one among many that would be conducted in the run-up to the 79th Independence Day.
Several security measures are already in place. A two-layered ring security system has been formed, comprising officers from the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP).
Snipers, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commandos, drones, and 700 AI-enabled CCTV cameras with facial recognition facilities are also part of the arrangements.
Some of the new security arrangements in place, as reported by The Indian Express on Monday, include an Under Vehicle Surveillance System.
Large-scale mock emergency exercises, hotel inspections, and increased patrolling are among the measures that are already being implemented, said officers.

Five Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for attempting to forcibly enter the Red Fort premises, Delhi Police said on Tuesday. Delhi Police further informed that all five men, aged between 20-25 years, are illegal immigrants working as labourers in Delhi. The police recovered some Bangladeshi documents from them. The probe is underway. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Gurugram Police detained ten individuals identified as Bangladeshi nationals for residing illegally in the city, police officials confirmed. Identification documents recovered from them verified their Bangladeshi citizenship. 'Ten illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been detained. Bangladeshi documents have been recovered from them. The process to deport them has begun,' Sandeep Kumar, PRO of Gurugram Police, stated. In related news, seven police personnel, including constables and head constables assigned to secure the Red Fort, have been suspended for negligence in their duties. As part of preparations for the programme scheduled on August 15, the Delhi Police conduct daily security drills. During a drill conducted on Saturday by the Special Cell, its team in plain clothes entered the Red Fort premises carrying a dummy bomb. The security personnel on duty failed to detect the fake device, leading to their suspension.

The security drill is being undertaken by the Delhi Police on a daily basis as a part of the preparations for August 15. Delhi police told ANI that the drill was conducted by the Special Cell on Saturday, during which they dressed up as civilians and entered the Red Fort premises with a dummy bomb. "At that time, the policemen deployed for the security of the Red Fort could not trace the bomb, due to which they were suspended," the police added. In the weak leading up the Independence Day, security at the Red Fort has been beefed up with the area being declared a high-security zone. Independence Day marks the occasion when the Prime Minister hoists the Tricolour and addresses the nation. The police arrested all of them, and an investigation has now been launched. Talking about the arrested people, Delhi Police told ANI, "The age of all of them is around 20-25 years, and they work as labourers in Delhi.' Further, the police also recovered some Bangladeshi documents from them. All the arrested people are now being investigated, police added.
