'Fragile' Nair, Sudharsan only red flags for Ganguly, ex-BCCI chief wants Gambhir to place his bets on uncapped batter
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly was impressed with the batting performance in the recently concluded Test series against England, but flagged one major concern — the No. 3 spot. Ganguly indicated he wasn't satisfied with how Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan handled the role, and urged head coach Gautam Gambhir to back uncapped Abhimanyu Easwaran for the position, with India set to face the West Indies in a two-match Test series in October. Sourav Ganguly had his say on the No. 3 batting spot in Indian Test line-up During the England series, captain Shubman Gill moved to No. 4 to fill the void left by Virat Kohli's retirement, leaving No. 3 up for grabs. India tested two options, but neither impressed. Sudharsan scored 140 runs at 23.33 in six innings, with one fifty, while Nair managed 111 runs at 27.75 in four innings, without a half-century. Speaking to The Times of India, Ganguly said Easwaran, the only batter in the squad not to get a game in the series, deserves a chance at No. 3. 'He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance. I feel batters like Yashasvi, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja have all got runs. It's only the No. 3 slot that looked a bit fragile. Maybe Easwaran will be tried there,' Ganguly said. Recently, Abhimanyu's father revealed that Gambhir has assured the Indian batter of a fair chance. The Bengal batter has been waiting to earn his debut cap for India since earning his first official call-up to the Indian squad in 2022. "Gautam Gambhir, when he spoke to my son, he assured him see you you're doing the right kind of things you'll get your turn you'll get a long run. I'm not the one who will push you out after one or two matches. I'll give you a long rope. That's what my son communicated to me. The entire coaching team assured him that he'll get his due, he'll get his long run. That's the best I can say. My son is waiting for 4 years, He's put in 23 years of hard work," Ranganathan Easwaran said in an interview with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel. Abhimanyu will next be seen in action in the Duleep Trophy, where he will lead the East Zone side. The domestic tournament will offer him a shot at proving himself for the West Indies series.

Star Wicket-Keeper And Young Batter Join Big Indian Names At BCCI's CoE: Report
Curated By : Cricketnext Staff Last Updated: August 12, 2025, 19:39 IST BCCI Centre of Excellence (PTI) India's wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan and all-rounder Riyan Parag have reported to the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru for their routine fitness assessments, according to a report in TOI. Both players are part of the East Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, with Kishan set to captain the side. Kishan, who has represented India in two Tests, 27 ODIs, and 32 T20Is, recently suffered an ankle injury after reportedly falling off a scooter. This injury previously led the national selectors to call up N Jagadeesan as a replacement for the injured Rishabh Pant. Parag, who has played one ODI but is yet to make his T20I debut, captained the Rajasthan Royals in several matches during IPL 2025 when regular skipper Sanju Samson was sidelined. Which Indian Cricketers Are Currently At BCCI's CoE? The CoE is currently hosting several high-profile names for routine checks. Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya and T20I opener Abhishek Sharma are already undergoing assessments, while middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer visited recently. India's T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, is also at the facility, having resumed batting in the nets following sports hernia surgery. The upcoming months present a packed schedule for India's white-ball team, beginning with the T20-format Asia Cup. The calendar features a home series against Australia in October (three ODIs, five T20Is), South Africa in November-December (three ODIs, five T20Is), and New Zealand in January (three ODIs, five T20Is), culminating in the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February-March. As per reports, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is expected to announce the Asia Cup squad on August 19 or 20, once the CoE's Sports Science team submits the medical reports of all players. Swipe Left For Next Video View all 'Abhishek Sharma is world's No. 1 T20 batter in last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson has been fantastic last season with both bat and gloves. So it will certainly be a tough call but Shubman in current form (although in Tests) can't be ignored. He had a good IPL also. Problem for selectors is, there are too many performers at the top of the order," a BCCI source privy to developments had earlier told PTI on Monday.
