Egypt and Switzerland Launch Joint Economic Committee to Boost Bilateral Ties
The Ministry of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation chaired the first meeting of the Egyptian-Swiss Joint Economic Committee in Bern, Switzerland, marking a significant step forward in the two countries' economic, trade, and investment partnership. This meeting followed the agreement signed earlier this year at the World Economic Forum in Davos between Minister Dr. Rania Al-Mashat and Swiss State Secretary for Economic Affairs, H.E. Helene Budliger.
Held at the technical level, the meeting brought together representatives from Egypt's Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Investment and Foreign Trade, Labor, the Central Bank of Egypt, as well as private sector companies and business community leaders from both countries. It provided a platform to advance bilateral cooperation and reinforce private sector engagement.
Dr. Rania Al-Mashat emphasized that the Egyptian-Swiss Joint Economic Committee reflects both nations' mutual commitment to strengthening economic relations, exploring new investment opportunities, addressing trade challenges, and modernizing existing agreements to better serve evolving economic needs. She described the committee as a vital mechanism to deepen bilateral collaboration and facilitate access to new markets.
The Egyptian side highlighted the country's ongoing reforms under the National Structural Reform Program, aimed at enhancing macroeconomic stability, ensuring predictable fiscal and monetary policies, and fostering a competitive and investor-friendly business environment. Special attention was given to Egypt's successful fourth review under its IMF-supported program, its growing trade profile under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement and the European Free Trade Agreement, and its strategic trade positioning.
Switzerland is currently Egypt's largest trading partner in Africa, with more than 100 Swiss companies operating in key sectors including pharmaceuticals, logistics, food and beverage. Bilateral trade is thriving, with Swiss exports to Egypt exceeding $1 billion in 2023 and Egyptian exports to Switzerland reaching $470 million. Additionally, over 82,000 Swiss tourists visited Egypt last year, reflecting growing people-to-people ties.
The Committee also discussed future coordination under the new 2025–2028 Swiss cooperation program in Egypt. Three key meetings took place: one with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation to finalize cooperation priorities; another with the Swiss-African Business Chamber to discuss Egypt's potential as a gateway for Swiss-African collaboration; and a third with Swiss Re, focused on advancing risk management and agricultural cooperation.
The Egyptian delegation reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to enhancing private sector involvement, expanding investment opportunities, and implementing the State Ownership Policy Document to promote fair competition and economic sustainability. Both sides agreed to continue close coordination, align efforts with Egypt's Vision 2030, and prioritize joint investments in human capital and sustainable development.
With over 45 years of bilateral cooperation, the evolving Egyptian-Swiss partnership stands as a model for productive international collaboration in trade, investment, and development.

Video: CNN anchor from Rafah crossing: 5,000 trucks waiting to cross into Gaza
Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty took CNN anchor Becky Anderson to the Rafah crossing for an on-the-ground look regarding the situation at the crossing linking Gaza Strip and Egypt. The CNN anchor said that trucks filled with humanitarian aid were waiting to cross the border into the Gaza Strip at the Rafah crossing. She added in a CNN video: 'You are joining me on the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing, and behind me are trucks filled with humanitarian aid waiting to cross the border into the Gaza Strip.' 'The drivers told me they have been waiting here for 20 days, and the Egyptians told me that these trucks are part of 5,000 trucks waiting to cross into Gaza.' 'Egypt is under tremendous pressure to do more to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the people of Gaza Strip,' she said. Red Line The Egyptian Foreign Minister said on Monday that the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza Strip is a 'red line' and that Cairo will not allow any party to jeopardize Egypt's national security or sovereignty. Abdelatty added that Egypt is working through various channels, with one goal – to alleviate the burden and suffering of the Palestinians. He strongly stressed that his country will not tolerate the mass Palestinian exodus from Gaza. 'We will not accept it, we will not participate in it, and we will not allow it to happen,' the Foreign Minister told CNN. He warned that this is guaranteed to be a 'one-way ticket' for Palestinians out of Gaza, which will lead to the 'complete liquidation' of their cause.

FM stresses urgent need to mobilize int'l support for Gaza reconstruction plan
CAIRO, Aug 17 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty stressed on Sunday the urgent need to sustain international support for implementing the Arab plan for Gaza's reconstruction, which outlines requirements for early recovery, infrastructure rebuilding, and restoring basic services as a prelude to the enclave's long-term development. Abdelatty made the remarks during his meeting in New Alamein city with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa, in the presence of Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy and Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Mohamed Ayman Ashour. Abdelatty reviewed preparations for the upcoming Cairo Conference on Gaza Early Recovery and Reconstruction to be convened once a ceasefire is reached, with both sides discussing detailed arrangements for the event. The minister reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering support for the Palestinian people in obtaining their legitimate rights and establishing their independent state, while also updating on Egypt's mediation efforts to secure a ceasefire. He stressed Egypt's categorical rejection of any displacement of Palestinians, denouncing Israel's policy of starvation and blockade in Gaza, as well as its systematic settlement expansion and violations in the occupied territories. The minister underlined Egypt's commitment to supporting the Palestinian Authority (PA) to enable it to assume its responsibilities in both Gaza and the West Bank, highlighting the need to activate a temporary Gaza management committee until the PA fully resumes its role in the Strip. He also voiced Egypt's readiness to help restore order by training Palestinian police forces to fill the security vacuum in Gaza. For her part, Minister Maya Morsy outlined Egypt's humanitarian efforts in Gaza, noting that the Egyptian Red Crescent has facilitated the entry of tens of thousands of aid trucks through the Rafah border crossing carrying hundreds of thousands of tons of relief supplies, alongside dozens of ambulances. Egypt has also treated thousands of injured and ill Palestinians at its hospitals, she added. Meanwhile, Minister Ashour reviewed the executive framework and program documents for the reconstruction plan, emphasizing the importance of ensuring effectiveness and sustainability across infrastructure, services, social protection, economic development, and local governance. He confirmed ongoing coordination with Palestinian counterparts to finalize the plan in its complete form. The Palestinian premier hailed Egypt's leading role in supporting the Palestinian cause and substantial humanitarian efforts in delivering aid to Gaza, praising Cairo's initiative in drafting the Arab plan for Gaza reconstruction and its work on early recovery. Egypt's treasury expected to generate revenues of approximately US$100 billion
Credit rating agency Fitch Solutions anticipates Egypt to generate approximately US$97 billion in tourism revenues by 2029, the privately-owned al-Mal newspaper reported on Monday. A recent report issued by the agency during the third quarter of this year, including its forecasts for the future of Egyptian tourism over the next five years, added that estimates indicate that the sector will generate revenues of US$17.5 billion by the end of this year, rising to $18.6 billion in 2026. Fitch explained that Egyptian tourism will achieve strong growth of 8.1 percent year-on-year, reaching $17.6 billion in 2025, compared to $16.2 billion last year, in line with the increase in tourist numbers. It pointed out that the tourism sector is expected to generate approximately $19.6 billion in 2027, surpassing the $20 billion mark in 2028, and reaching $20.9 billion in 2029. The report said that international tourism revenues in Egypt were negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the travel restrictions imposed at the time, leading to a decline to $4.9 billion in 2020, compared to $14.3 billion in 2019. Fitch explained that, over the coming years, improved consumer spending in Europe and the Middle East and North Africa will contribute to increased visitor revenues. According to the report, many tourists visiting Egypt are relatively wealthy travelers with high purchasing power, particularly from the UK, Germany, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Egypt received approximately 8.7 million tourists during the first half of this year, a 22 percent increase compared to the same period last year, it noted. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, stated that there has been a 22-23 percent increase in the volume of tourism revenues during the first six months of this year, compared to the same period in 2024.
