Cricketer-turned-pundit Deep Dasgupta wants India to drop Sai Sudharsan from their playing 11 for the 2nd Test against England.
Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta wants India to make two changes in their playing 11 for the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England: dropping one-Test-old Sai Sudharsan for Nitish Kumar Reddy and bringing in Kuldeep Yadav at number eight.
Sudharsan made his international debut in the first Test at Headingley. He got out strangled down the leg for a duck in the first innings and clipped an easy one to mid-wicket after looking good for 30 (48) in the second. Dasgupta believes that Sudharsan should make way for the more experienced Karun Nair at number three, while Reddy could supplement the pace attack from number six.
'In general, you don't want to make too many changes after the first game, but you have also got to think this is a very young side. It's a new captain, newish side. So you have got to get the combination right. Karun Nair has got most of his runs at No. 3. Also, he batted for India A against the England Lions at No. 3," the former India wicketkeeper-batter said on Star Sports, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
'So you might want to look at Karun Nair at No. 3," he added. That opens up a space for someone like Nitish at No. 6, who, if required, can give you a few overs of seam. I will have a chat with Sai Sudharsan and say this is not a reflection of what happened in the first Test, but this is a combination things. So that conversation becomes very, very important, how you put it across to someone like Sai."
The bigger point of concern in Headingley was Shardul Thakur. Picked as an all-rounder, he contributed 1 and 4 with the bat and was trusted to bowl just 16 overs from more than 182.
Dasgupta feels Kuldeep at number eight would be free of any batting responsibilities because the top-order is in form.
'Looking forward to Birmingham, which is usually a batting-friendly venue, I would love to see Kuldeep there. The advantage of having a top five amongst runs is that you are not too worried about contribution from your No. 8 with the bat," he said.

Lloyd Criticises Gill's Reactive Captaincy, Cook Disagrees Using Stokes' Example

Last Updated: David Lloyd criticised Shubman Gill's reactive captaincy after India's loss, while Alastair Cook defended him, comparing his situation to Ben Stokes' early days as captain. Former England cricketers David Lloyd and Alastair Cook had differing opinions on Shubman Gill's captaincy, which has become a significant talking point following India's historic loss in the first Test of the five-match series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Leeds. Despite dominating the majority of the action over the first four days, India handed the game to England on Day 5 due to poor bowling and fielding errors. Lloyd criticised Gill's approach, describing it as 'reactive rather than proactive'. However, former England captain Cook was more understanding, comparing Gill's situation to Ben Stokes' early days as England's Test team captain. 'The intrigue is with Shubman Gill, who's a very inexperienced skipper. How's he going to come back from that? He's got Ravindra Jadeja and Karun Nair, who are in their 30s. So he's got experience in his team. It's great having a young team that he's got. But tactically, he's reactive rather than proactive in the stuff that he's doing," Lloyd was quoted as saying on Sky Sports' Stick to Cricket podcast. How Cook Defended Gill Cook responded by saying that it takes time for a team to gel under a new captain. 'When you take over a team, there will always be a phase when the team gets used to the new leader. This happened with (Ben) Stokes when he came in. It took a while (for England players) to get used to him when he came in and said, 'We're going to try and smash every ball'," Cook replied. Despite vice-captain Rishabh Pant India collapsed from 430/3 in the first innings to 471, losing seven wickets for 41 runs. In the second innings, they crumbled to 364 all out from 333/4, losing six wickets for 31 runs. On Day 5, India could not defend a fourth-innings target of 371 under overcast conditions, with England comfortably chasing it down with five wickets to spare. First Published:

KL Rahul given no choice but to carry form throughout series, Manjrekar cites Pant's impact: ‘Can't be a one-ton wonder'

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar feels that it's high time KL Rahul should realise his potential as he can not be a one-hundred wonder. With the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Rahul has now assumed the role of the senior-most batter in India's Test line-up. The spotlight is firmly on him, and so is the weight of expectations. As one of the few experienced names in a relatively young batting order, Rahul is expected not just to deliver with the bat but also to provide stability, leadership, and guidance to the emerging talents around him. With twin centuries in the Leeds Test, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter has once again proven his match-winning credentials. Manjrekar was impressed with Pant's consistency in the red-ball format, which he once again proved with twin centuries in a Test. He became the second wicketkeeper in cricket history to score twin centuries in a Test after Andy Flower. "I think he will because it seems like he enjoys batting in Test cricket. Any batter who gets two hundreds in a Test match, it takes a lot out of you mentally, not so much physically, getting a hundred in the first innings, and 48 hours later, you have the same kind of reserve to get another hundred. So that is a hallmark of an exceptional player," the former India batter said on Star Sports. Also Read | Rishabh Pant uninstalled WhatsApp, switched off his phone and punished himself after 'stupid stupid stupid' MCG shot 'KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder' Manjrekar emphasised the need for KL Rahul to deliver with greater consistency, especially during this transitional phase for Team India. He noted that while Rahul has the talent, he must avoid being the kind of player who scores just one standout century in a five-match series. Drawing a comparison to Pant's recent impactful performances, Manjrekar stressed that India needs Rahul to step up regularly and shoulder more responsibility as one of the senior batters. "Rishabh Pant enjoys Test matches. He has not got enough runs. So he is hungry. I see Pant carrying his form, but there is another senior batter in the team, who now has got no choice but to carry his form right through the series. Indian cricket needs him badly, and KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer," Manjrekar added.

IND vs ENG: 'Far too defensive' - Former India cricketer urges captain Shubman Gill to be more aggressive

While acknowledging Gill's composure and talent as a batter, Manjrekar cautioned the young skipper against being too defensive in his approach, especially when conditions are in India's favour. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Speaking on Star Sports' Game Plan, Manjrekar said Gill is 'sorted' as a batter at No. 4 and will only improve with experience. 'I just hope he can carry on after getting to a 108 or 120 because now he knows what could happen if he gets out. So that is something he will start doing,' he said. 03:11 India's Day 2 at the Nets in Edgbaston | IND vs ENG Test Series However, it was Gill's field placements and leadership that drew greater scrutiny. 'Overcast conditions, I know the ball wasn't doing too much, but they pre-empted the English approach and had a far too defensive field,' Manjrekar noted. 'I hate to bring Virat Kohli as a comparison because it's unfair on the young man, but you can just imagine Virat Kohli in that situation.' Poll Do you think Shubman Gill should adopt a more aggressive captaincy style? Yes, he needs to be more aggressive No, his current style is fine Maybe, depends on the situation Undecided 'Whether they would have got wickets or not, Kohli would have shown the opposition that he's trying to get them out. Gill is not that kind of personality, nor that kind of captain. But maybe don't go so defensive pre-empting things,' he added. Manjrekar also praised Rishabh Pant 's hunger and resilience, saying he is likely to carry his twin tons into the second Test. At the same time, he warned KL Rahul to maintain consistency. 'KL Rahul cannot be a one-hundred wonder or a one-Test-match performer. Indian cricket needs him badly,' he said. The second Test begins Wednesday at Edgbaston, with India trailing 0-1 in the five-match series. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.
