Rasmus Højgaard blows Ryder Cup opportunity as Marco Penge wins in Denmark
Ryder Cup
team and second win at the Danish Golf Championship in three years before he let a four-shot lead slip to Marco Penge.
The 24-year-old would have got into the automatic qualification spots with a victory at Furesø Golfklub, but was left to rue errors and inspired play by Penge, who sealed his second
DP World Tour
win of the season.
The Englishman shot a four-under-par 67 which included birdies on his final two holes to beat Højgaard by a shot on 16 under. Højgaard managed to get an impressive eagle on the par 5 18th to force Penge to hole a three-footer for victory, but it was too little too late for the Dane.
Højgaard began the round with a one-shot lead over Penge and started his round in inspired form with an eagle on the par 5 third after an approach to three feet and followed it up with birdies at the fourth and sixth holes. Then the wheels came off with three bogeys and a double bogey at the par 3 ninth where he failed to make the green from a greenside bunker and took three more to get home.

Penge left the door ajar with his only bogey of the day at the 16th, but responded with a brilliant approach to two feet for birdie at the penultimate hole to restore his two-shot advantage heading into the 72nd hole.
'I've been playing so well this year,' Penge said. 'You know, coming back from my time off, to have won so soon [after that] and to achieve what I've achieved since I won.
'My main goal after I won was to not get complacent and drop off basically. My team have been a massive support for me, my family, everyone involved really.
'It's made me keep striving for more and this is amazing. And Rasmus, he's some player, to hit the shot he hit into the last and make eagle and basically make me have to win it was unbelievable.'
Penge has moved up to 14th in Ryder Cup rankings after an impressive year on the DP World Tour which includes a win in China and a tied second-place finish at the Scottish Open. Another win next week at the British Masters, the final qualifying event, would give Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald something to think about. Højgaard will get another chance to make the team automatically at The Belfry.

Rory McIlroy prize money at BMW Championship as MacIntyre loses out to Scheffler
Rory McIlroy picked up a cheque for €376,977 as he finished in a tie for 12th position at the BMW Championship in Maryland. The Holywood man was hindered by consecutive double bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes as he struggled to close the gap on the leading group, carding a final round 70. Meanwhile, Shane Lowry went home €182,076 richer as he finished further down in the field in a tie for 23rd place on one over par for the tournament. His final round included four birdies and just one bogey as he shot a three-under-par 67. Robert MacIntyre saw a four-shot lead slip away in the final round as world number one Scottie Scheffler pulled off a stunning move to secure victory, pocketing €3,077,559 in the process. MacIntyre earned €1,846,437 for finishing second. The Scot's substantial overnight lead was reduced to just one stroke after he began Sunday with two bogeys, and despite a valiant attempt, he couldn't halt the American's growing momentum. With only two shots separating them and two holes left to play, MacIntyre could only watch as Scheffler executed an extraordinary chip from the rough, effectively sealing his victory on the penultimate hole. It was a tough pill to swallow for MacIntyre, who had created his own memorable moment on the final hole on Saturday when he sunk a 41-foot putt to maintain his significant lead. In pursuit of the win that would have guaranteed his spot in Europe's Ryder Cup team, McIntyre got off to a disastrous start on Sunday. However, Scheffler was also far from flawless, a missed putt restoring the Scot's two-stroke lead after three. The American drew level on the fifth hole after MacIntyre found a bunker with his approach shot, and Scheffler seemed unstoppable as he moved two clear on the 13th. MacIntyre managed to close the gap once more, but the 15th hole proved crucial as the Oban man failed to capitalise on Scheffler finding a bunker with his approach shot. A missed birdie putt handed the momentum back to the American. Following Scheffler's spectacular response on the 17th, MacIntyre couldn't conjure up any more final hole heroics and completed a three-over-par closing round of 73, falling two strokes short of Scheffler's 15-under-par aggregate of 265. Scottie Scheffler (Image: James Gilbert/PGA TOUR via Getty Images) "He's hit a great shot," MacIntyre said of Scheffler's pyrotechnics at the 17th. "Nothing you can do with that. I just didn't play good enough. "I got off to an absolutely horrific start. I just expected jumpers on one and two. One, it's come out dead and then it's got a massive mud ball just short of the green. "I just felt great going out today. I wasn't even expecting to be over par, to be honest. I was really expecting to go out there, foot down, and perform the way I have the last couple days." A closing round of 67 propelled Tommy Fleetwood into a share of fourth position behind American Maverick McNealy, whilst Harry Hall, who began Sunday in a tie for fourth, slipped back with a disappointing 70 to end up in sixth spot.

Lowry and McIlroy finish on positive note at BMW as Schauffele laments 'playing like ass'
Well out of contention and operating in the half-light of early tee times, Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy spent their respective Sundays in the sweltering heat of Maryland tuning up for next week's Tour Championship. The work was at least somewhat productive. Lowry rebounded from a Saturday of struggles at the BMW Championship to shoot a closing 67 on Sunday, fully eight shots better than his score the previous day. It left the Offaly man on one-over for the tournament and hovering around a tie for 23rd with the destination of the $20m purse still up in the air, Ryder Cup teammate Robert MacIntyre and world No.1 Scottie Scheffler battling for the biggest prize. Lowry opened birdie-birdie and found two more on the back nine with just a single bogey on the tricky par-3 17th at Caves Valley, the second stop on the FedEx Cup Playoffs schedule. With the top 30 making it through to next week's season finale in Atlanta, Lowry was comfortable inside that cohort 23rd as some of those on the bubble fought for the precious last places. McIlroy's position was even more secure, so much so that he skipped last week's opening Playoff tournament. He closed his BMW campaign with a even-par 70 but it was far from a mundane Sunday, the scorecard featuring plenty of splashes of colour. McIlroy birdied the short third hole but with his driving proving erratic, back-to-back double bogeys arrived on the fifth and sixth. The Holywood man found his first fairway on the eighth but then suffered from a mud ball and skewed his approach into the rough for another bogey. However McIlroy dug in and found five birdies and just one more blemish on the way home, his 70 leaving him on three-under overall, inside the top 15. At least McIlroy has next week to continue his Ryder Cup build-up. The man directly behind him in golf's global rankings, world No.3 Xander Schauffele will miss the Tour Championship for the first time in eight years after a closing 66 wasn't enough to help him pull off an unlikely climb into the Top 30. After winning two majors in 2024, Schauffele has been out of sorts this season, without a win since his Open triumph in Troon last July. "There's nothing worse than trying your hardest and playing like ass," the Californian said. "It's the worst combo. Some of us do it, some of us don't. It's been a while since I have, and I did it for a few weeks now, and it sucked. "It was mentally a long season for me even though it was short. So physically I feel a lot better, which is a plus. No sort of recurring injury, which is a plus. "I feel like I just need to sort of reset a little bit, cool off a little bit, and just get back to a healthy mental place where I want to sit down and work really hard again. Right now I'm mentally a little tapped."
