Darjeeling: Renulina Subba, who once made headlines for bringing a plastic gun into the Bengal assembly in 1981, is set to receive GTA's inaugural Subash Ghisingh Smriti Sarwachiya Nagrik Samman Puraskar.
Subba, now 87, was Kalimpong's first Gorkha woman MLA.
She won her first election on a All-India Gorkha League ticket in 1977 and later as an independent in 1982.
On Wednesday, Subba told TOI: "During a conflict at a tea garden, CPM cadre carried out a brutal attack. Eight families in the area were completely wiped out. At the time, there was no police outpost in the vicinity."
"I was determined to raise the issue in Vidhan Sabha.
However, since we were in opposition, I was not given an opportunity to speak. So, I went to New Market and bought a toy pistol. I also made a mannequin using cotton, painted it red to resemble blood, and hid it under my shawl. In the assembly, while then-CM Jyoti Basu was claiming that Bengal was peaceful, I stood up and boldly declared, 'No, Mr Basu, you are a liar!' I then staged a demonstration using the mannequin and the toy gun to expose the violence and injustice," she added.

Subba — also known as the 'iron lady of cinchona' — said it was due to her action that women cops started getting posted at the assembly. "Many thought the pistol was real. A marshal rushed to escort me out, but I resisted, stating, 'No, you cannot arrest me, I am a woman, bring women cops.' It was after this incident that female security personnel began to be recruited for the assembly," she said.
"Subba's symbolic act led to a commotion in the House.
It has remained as a striking example of her dramatic approach to protest and political expression," said author Jiwan Labbar.
GTA chief executive Anit Thapa had announced the award last year on the birth anniversary of Nepali poet Bhanubhakta Acharya. The award will be conferred annually on Ghisingh's birth anniversary — June 22 — to a distinguished individual who made notable contributions to the region. Subash Ghisingh was one of the most influential figures in the politics of the Hills.
"This year, we are bestowing the award on Renulina Subba for her pioneering work in establishing educational institutions, health centres, advocating for the Nepali language, promoting women's empowerment, and leading the cinchona workers' movement," Thapa said on Wednesday.

Odisha needs sharper focus on governance
His party rode to power on a flurry of promises including restoring Odia asmita or identity, reducing corruption, loosening the bureaucracy's stranglehold, and improving the pace of development. It has fulfilled some major promises by providing an input subsidy of Rs 800 to paddy farmers, launching the Subhadra Yojana for women, and pursuing a vigorous industrialisation drive. Majhi also restored the public grievance system and brought the government closer to the people. There has been a discernible change in functioning with the CM seen as calling the shots. With such noteworthy achievements, the Majhi government has planned massive celebrations for its first anniversary. Yet, several worries linger. It is not lost on anyone that governance has slowed down, with low budgetary spending and stalling of key projects. There is a lack of visible development work on the ground. The CM's note on the tardy movement of crucial files at the top level is, in itself, an admission of the state of affairs. Several ministers have added to the confusion by speaking out of turn on key issues. Law and order has been hit with a spurt in serious crimes. The Nepali students' issue at a private university, which snowballed into a diplomatic embarrassment, is a pointer to the government's failure in handling crises. Majhi has done a fine job in fulfilling promises and building his brand in the first year. It's now time to shift focus to delivering governance. The honeymoon is over.

Goa set to deploy drones to swoop down on illegal fishing methods, out-of-state anglers
Panaji: Following the successful completion of a two-month trial, the Goa fisheries department is set to procure drones to monitor illegal fishing activities in the state's waters, for the upcoming fishing season, starting Aug 1. 'Goa's coastline is smaller than that of other states. So, we can have this new technology,' fisheries minister Nilkanth Halarnkar told TOI . The trial run was conducted in April and May at the Panaji jetty by the fisheries department's head office. The department plans to expand drone surveillance to crack down on fishing using LED lights, bull trawling, and 'cross border' fishing. 'Now that we have seen the drones operate on a trial basis, we are trying to see how we can utilise them,' Halarnkar said. 'A proposal has to be made to govt following which a tender will be floated to procure them.' But challenges come with innovation. Drones have a flight capability of only a few hours due to battery life. Coastal weather also needs to be factored in while flying them. 'Fishing jetties can also have CCTVs that are able to capture images from long distances and detect such illegalities 24x7,' said a fisherman who has been protesting against LED fishing over the years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo He added, 'The Coast Guard can coordinate with fisherfolk to impound vessels of the violators.' Fishing using LED lights attracts fish in large numbers, including non-target species, leading to bycatch and the capture of vulnerable marine species. Bull trawling — used to boost the volume of catch — involves dragging heavy nets along the seabed, physically disrupting and damaging benthic habitats, including corals, sponges, and other marine life. 'Cross-border' fishing occurs when fisherfolk from other states fish within the 12 nautical mile zone of Goa's territorial waters. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
