Goa set to deploy drones to swoop down on illegal fishing methods, out-of-state anglers

Panaji:
Following the successful completion of a two-month trial, the Goa fisheries department is set to procure drones to monitor illegal fishing activities in the state's waters, for the upcoming fishing season, starting Aug 1.
'Goa's coastline is smaller than that of other states. So, we can have this new technology,' fisheries minister Nilkanth Halarnkar told
TOI
.
The trial run was conducted in April and May at the Panaji jetty by the fisheries department's head office.
The department plans to expand drone surveillance to crack down on fishing using LED lights, bull trawling, and 'cross border' fishing.
'Now that we have seen the drones operate on a trial basis, we are trying to see how we can utilise them,' Halarnkar said.
'A proposal has to be made to govt following which a tender will be floated to procure them.'
But challenges come with innovation. Drones have a flight capability of only a few hours due to battery life. Coastal weather also needs to be factored in while flying them.
'Fishing jetties can also have CCTVs that are able to capture images from long distances and detect such illegalities 24x7,' said a fisherman who has been protesting against LED fishing over the years.

He added, 'The Coast Guard can coordinate with fisherfolk to impound vessels of the violators.'
Fishing using LED lights attracts fish in large numbers, including non-target species, leading to bycatch and the capture of vulnerable marine species. Bull trawling — used to boost the volume of catch — involves dragging heavy nets along the seabed, physically disrupting and damaging benthic habitats, including corals, sponges, and other marine life.
'Cross-border' fishing occurs when fisherfolk from other states fish within the 12 nautical mile zone of Goa's territorial waters.

The suspects claimed that he had also removed his chain and kept it in his pocket. The woman then believed him and kept the chain in her purse," Shirole said while talking to TOI. "The suspects, on the pretext of checking the woman's purse, diverted her attention and stole her chain before fleeing. The woman later realised that she was tricked and registered a complaint related to cheating," the officer added. Though there were no closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the crime spot, the police have started the process to identify the suspects based on the description provided by the woman and her family members. Six booked in fake marriage racket

Surat: Utran police registered an offence against six people, including the bride, in a fake marriage scam. The accused arranged and attended the marriage, allegedly distributing Rs 2.5 lakh as part of the matchmaking deal. Just 13 days after the wedding, the bride vanished from the groom's home, taking with her a gold chain and silver anklets. The victim, 27-year-old paan shop owner Gaurang Lumbhani from Utran, was introduced to the bride through his sister's brother-in-law's friend, Naresh Miyani, who claimed to have a suitable match. Although the bride belonged to a different caste, Gaurang agreed to meet her after seeing her photo. On March 30, Gaurang, along with Kamlesh Ghutla and Naresh Miyani, met the woman—introduced as Kajal Parmar—along with her 'siblings' Lala Parmar and Swati Parmar. That same day, Lala visited Gaurang's home to finalise arrangements, where it was agreed that Gaurang's family would pay Rs 2.5 lakhs to Kajal's family. Naresh, the chief mediator, was present. The marriage agreement was signed at an advocate's office on April 17, after which Kajal moved into Gaurang's house. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AI is changing the way you learn a language Talkpal AI Learn More Undo But just under two weeks later, Kajal disappeared, taking with her a 6.5-gram gold chain and silver anklets valued at Rs 5,500. When Gaurang contacted her, Kajal claimed she did not receive her share of the money, alleging that the mediators—Naresh, Kamlesh, Raju Bhadiyadara, and others—pocketed it all, and told him not to call again. Gaurang then discovered that Kajal was actually Sayra, a divorcee with an eight-year-old child. Lala was Divyang Mistry, and none of the people posing as Kajal's relatives were related at all. They concocted the entire story to deceive him. When Gaurang threatened police action, Naresh refunded Rs 65,000 and Kamlesh Rs 20,000. However, the chief mediator, Raju Bhadiyadara, withheld Rs 1.4 lakhs and threatened Gaurang. The fake bride Sayra also refused to return the gold chain and anklets. Lumbhani has since filed a formal complaint against all six accused for cheating, criminal conspiracy, and criminal intimidation.
