"Turned It Off": Instagram's New Location Sharing Feature Sparks Privacy Concerns

NDTV3 days ago
Instagram users are warning about a new location sharing feature, fearing that the hugely popular app could be putting people in danger by revealing their whereabouts without their knowledge.
The Meta-owned image sharing platform added an option on Wednesday which shares locations using an Instagram map, similar to a feature rival Snapchat has offered since 2017.
Some users have since been shocked to discover that their location was being shared, viral posts have shown.
"Mine was turned on and my home address was showing for all of my followers to see," Instagram user Lindsey Bell wrote in reply to a warning posted by "Bachelor" reality television personality Kelley Flanagan to her 300,000 TikTok followers.
"Turned it off immediately once I knew but had me feeling absolutely sick about it."
In a TikTok video, Flanagan called Instagram's new location sharing feature "dangerous" and gave step-by-step instructions on how to make sure it is turned off.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri fired off a post on Meta-owned Threads stressing that Instagram location sharing is off by default, meaning users need to opt in for it to be active.
"Quick Friend Map clarification, your location will only be shared if you decide to share it, and if you do, it can only be shared with a limited group of people you choose," Mosseri wrote.
"To start, location sharing is completely off."
The feature was added as a way for friends to better connect with one another, sharing posts from "cool spots," Instagram said in a blog post.
Users can be selective regarding who they share locations with, and can turn it off whenever they wish, according to Instagram.
Wariness regarding whether Instagram is watching out for user privacy comes just a week after a federal jury in San Francisco sided with women who accused Meta of exploiting health data gathered by the Flo app, which tracks menstruation and efforts to get pregnant.
A jury concluded that Meta used women's sensitive health data to better target money-making ads, according to law firm Labaton Keller Sucharow, which represented the plaintiffs.
Evidence at trial showed Meta was aware it was getting confidential health data from the third-party app, and that some employees appeared to mock the nature of the information, the law firm contended.
"This case was about more than just data -- it was about dignity, trust, and accountability," lead attorney Carol Villegas said in a blog post.
Damages in the suit have yet to be determined.

Ukraine successfully tests Starlink's direct-to-cell technology

Ukraine's largest mobile operator Kyivstar has successfully conducted the first field test of Elon Musk's Starlink direct-to-cell satellite technology in Eastern Europe, the company said on Tuesday. The pilot test took place in the Zhytomyr region using Starlink's direct-to-cell technology, Kyivstar said, with its CEO Oleksandr Komarov and Ukraine's digital transformation minister Mykhailo Fedorov exchanging messages via regular smartphones. Direct-to-cell satellite technology aims to provide reliable connectivity when terrestrial networks are unavailable, a critical asset for war-torn Ukraine where Russian attacks on infrastructure regularly disrupt communications. Satellites used for this service are equipped with advanced cellular modems that function like cell towers in space, beaming signals directly to smartphones on the ground. Telecom providers around the world are turning to satellite technology in an effort to erase dead zones, particularly in remote areas where terrestrial networks are either too expensive to deploy or face significant geographical challenges. Space X-owned Starlink has signed deals with telcos in 10 countries for a direct-to-cell service, with Kyivstar set to become the first operator in Europe to roll it out. Kyivstar and Starlink plan to commercially launch direct-to-cell connectivity in the fourth quarter of 2025, starting with messaging services. Mobile satellite broadband data is planned to be made available to a wider audience at the beginning of 2026, Komarov told Reuters in July. VEON, which owns Kyivstar, is also in talks with other providers, including Amazon's Project Kuiper, to expand its satellite services for mobile devices beyond Ukraine.

Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses fuels 110% growth of global smart glasses market

Meta continues to increase its share of the global smart glasses market with its AI-powered Ray-Ban glasses, growing shipments by 73 per cent in the first half of 2025, according to figures from Counterpoint Research. The tech giant's dominance in the smart glasses market has been driven by strong demand and the expanded manufacturing capacity of Luxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban and Meta's key trading partner, as per the report by the market research firm. It further said that the global smart glasses market grew by 110 per cent year-over-year (YoY) in H1 2025. 'We expect the rapid growth of the global smart glasses market to continue throughout 2026 and beyond. More new AI glasses models are expected to enter the market in H2 2025, including upcoming releases from Meta, Alibaba and several smaller players,' Counterpoint Research said on Tuesday, August 12. AI smart glasses accounted for 78 per cent of total shipments in H1 2025, up from 46 per cent in H1 2024 and 66 per cent in H2 2024. This was largely due to the dominance of Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses, the report read. The global smart glasses market is made up of two segments. While the AI smart glasses segment grew by over 250 per cent YoY in H1 2025, the report stated that shipments of audio smart glasses have declined. The Counterpoint Research analysis comes days after US President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on key allies, including India, went into effect on August 1. However, analysts expect limited impact of US-imposed tariffs on growth of smart glasses. 'The global tariff crisis for electronic devices during the first half of the year has had a limited impact on the smart glasses market so far, as the situation still appears manageable for key OEMs and their manufacturing partners,' Flora Tang, Senior Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research, was quoted as saying. Luxottica, Meta's production partner in the Ray-Ban AI glasses, is said to have played a critical role in the success of the wearable by 'not only by scaling up production but also by supporting product longevity through the expansion of style variants and driving retail sales.' 'According to our channel tracker, Luxottica's own retail networks, including online and offline Ray-Ban stores, Sunglass Hut and LensCrafters, account for a significant portion of the product's sales,' the report read. The strong demand for the Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses is reflected in their presence in major markets such as North America, Western Europe, and Australia which lead global smart glasses shipments. Its shipment shares were further boosted by the expansion of the wearable into India, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Q2 2025. In June this year, the wearable became available for pre-order in India in a range of styles, including the new Skyler frame, with prices starting at Rs 29,900 and going up to Rs 35,700 for select models. The smart glasses can also be paired to your smartphone using the newly introduced Meta AI app. Beyond Meta, the other major OEMs in the global AI smart glasses market are Chinese players such as the recently unveiled Xiaomi AI Glasses, TCL-RayNeo's RayNeo V3 series, Thunderobot's AURA smart glasses, and the Kopin Solos AirGo V series. Terming Xiaomi's AI glasses as a 'dark horse', the report said that the wearable became the fourth best-selling model overall and the third best-selling product in the AI glasses segment despite being on the market for about a week in H1 2025. 'The Xiaomi device's sales were driven by strong support from tech enthusiasts and Mi fans in China. We expect Xiaomi to continue enhancing the product's performance through OTA and software updates in the coming months,' Tang said. The AI smart glasses component manufacturing sector is also seeing the entry of various Chinese chipset makers such as Allwinner Technology, which is offering low-cost SoC solutions aimed at powering more affordable smart glasses. Qualcomm also recently launched an upgraded version of its AR 1+ Gen 1 chipset which is said to be 26 per cent smaller and consumes 7 per cent less power, enabling smart glasses with slimmer product designs and longer battery life. Shipments of smart audio glasses from major players such as Amazon and Huawei has suffered 'due to rising competition from AI glasses' that offer more advanced features 'such as photo and video capture, image and object recognition, encyclopedia-based Q&A, live translation and more.' Counterpoint Research said that it has revised its smart glasses market forecast for both 2025 and 2026 based on the market's momentum and continued influx of new entrants. 'We continue to expect the market to grow at a CAGR of over 60% between 2024 and 2029,' it said. 'More AI smart glasses are expected to enter the market from H2 2025 onward, including launches from internet giants such as Meta and Alibaba. Meta recently introduced the Oakley Meta glasses, featuring improved battery life and enhanced video-shooting quality over the Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses, and primarily targeting athletes and sports enthusiasts,' the report read. 'Our industry checks indicate positive market feedback for this model. We expect Meta will take a more aggressive approach and unveil a broader product lineup at the Meta Connect event to further drive growth. Meanwhile, we believe Apple is also actively exploring this space and developing its first AI glasses,' it added.

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke to step down, plans new startup

GitHub Chief Executive Thomas Dohmke said on Monday he will leave the Microsoft-owned code-hosting platform to launch a new startup, capping a tenure that included a major push into artificial intelligence through the company's Copilot products. Dohmke, who moved to the U.S. from Germany more than a decade ago after selling his startup to Microsoft, said his "startup roots" prompted the decision. "I've decided to leave GitHub to become a founder again," he said in a blog post, but did not provide details about the new venture. Before becoming CEO, Dohmke helped lead mobile developer tools at Microsoft and worked on GitHub's acquisition alongside former CEO Nat Friedman. Microsoft acquired GitHub in a $7.5 billion all-stock deal in 2018. More than 150 million developers use GitHub's tools to build, maintain and collaborate on software projects, according to the company's website. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Dohmke's successor. His transition period concludes at the end of the year. Dohmke said that under his leadership, GitHub expanded globally, earned U.S. FedRAMP certification for federal use and doubled AI projects on the platform. Axios, which first reported the news, said Microsoft developer division head Julia Liuson will oversee GitHub's revenue, engineering and support. GitHub's chief product officer, Mario Rodriguez, will report to head of product for Microsoft's AI platform Asha Sharma, according to the report.
