Goa government to lay new optical fibre network to boost connectivity
Panaji, Jul 25 (PTI) The Goa government plans to lay a new optical fibre cable network across the coastal state to enhance internet connectivity and ensure digital access to every household, Information Technology Minister Rohan Khaunte has said.
Responding to a question raised by independent MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye during the ongoing monsoon session of the state assembly, Khaunte said in a written reply on Thursday that the proposed network will form the backbone of the state's 'Har Ghar Fibre' initiative.
'The government is committed to providing affordable, high-speed internet connectivity to every household in Goa, enabling access to digital services in education, healthcare, e-governance, commerce and communication," Khaunte said.
He added that the initiative is aligned with the Centre's Digital India programme and is aimed at bridging the digital divide, particularly in underserved areas.
The project will be executed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model while also leveraging existing infrastructure such as the Goa Broadband Network and BharatNet to avoid redundancy, Khaunte said in his written reply.
He said that the last-mile internet services will be delivered through licensed Internet Service Providers (ISPs), using shared or leased access to the network.
Khaunte said the project will be rolled out in phases, and regions currently facing limited or no connectivity will get priority.
'Year-wise targets for implementation will be finalised following the tendering process and preparation of the execution roadmap," the minister added. PTI RPS NR

Uttar Pradesh secures ₹12,031 crore under PMAY-Urban 2.0
LUCKNOW: In a major push towards ' Housing for All ', the Uttar Pradesh government has secured financial approval of Rs 12,031 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) Mission 2.0 to provide pucca houses to the urban poor, according to a statement released on Saturday. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure transparency and quality in construction, the statement said. Following this, geo-tagging and photographic documentation of each house will be mandatory under PMAY (Urban), enabling real-time monitoring at every stage of construction. All houses will also be equipped with disaster-resilient features to safeguard against earthquakes, floods, and other calamities, making safety an integral component of the scheme, it said. The cost of construction under the scheme is being shared between the Centre and the state government in a 60:40 ratio. Each eligible beneficiary will receive Rs 2.5 lakh in assistance to build a permanent (pucca) house. Launched on September 1, 2024, the PMAY (Urban) Mission 2.0 aims to ensure pucca houses for all families by the set deadline. The scheme is being closely monitored by officials at both the state and district levels to guarantee timely and quality construction. The initiative not only provides social security to the urban poor but also promotes integrated urban development across Uttar Pradesh, the statement added.

Cong's cotton certification allegations misleading: Govt
NEW DELHI: Centre on Sunday refuted Congress's allegations regarding irregularities in organic cotton certification, calling the remarks unfounded and misleading. The commerce ministry said the aspersions cast against National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) were baseless and unwarranted. "Generalised allegations against a robust regulatory system of the country for a particular crop/region/group of operators only serve to undermine the credibility of legitimate regulatory institutions and the broader organic movement in India," the ministry said in a statement. Gujarat approves action plan for Artificial Intelligence implementation in governance
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has approved the Action Plan for Implementation of Artificial Intelligence [AI] (2025–2030), setting the stage for the integration of AI into Gujarat's governance framework over the next five years. The plan aims to improve service delivery, strengthen administrative processes, and apply AI tools in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and finance. This move aligns with the broader goals of Viksit Gujarat@2047 and the national mission of Viksit Bharat@2047, officials said. Prepared by the Department of Science and Technology based on recommendations from a 10-member AI Taskforce Committee, the plan will serve as a roadmap to equip government departments with AI systems and capabilities. It also supports the Centre's broader objective, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to expand the use of artificial intelligence in public policy, administration, and digital infrastructure. The State's action plan focuses on six major areas: building a secure and regulation-compliant data ecosystem; expanding GPU and cloud-based digital infrastructure, including setting up AI factories in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities; training 2.5 lakh individuals—students, MSMEs, and government officials—in AI, machine learning, and related technologies; promoting research and partnerships between academia and industry for building practical government-use AI models; supporting DeepTech startups with incubation, mentorship, and funding; and ensuring safe and responsible AI through audit systems, guidelines, and risk protocols. Implementation will be carried out in phases, starting with the creation of a State-level AI data repository, setting up AI development facilities, and launching pilot projects in selected departments. To oversee the entire effort, the Government will establish a dedicated AI and Deep Tech Mission. This institutional mechanism will lead the design, planning, and monitoring of AI projects while facilitating collaboration between academic institutions, industry players, and startups. Gujarat has already taken steps to strengthen its AI foundation, including the launch of an AI Centre of Excellence at GIFT City, the organisation of AI training programmes for public officials, and the issuance of an Expression of Interest for developing Indian language-based AI models. The state has also conducted an AI Innovation Challenge to encourage practical solutions.
