'Nothing but hypocrisy': Mamata Banarjee slams BJP over ‘Constitution murder day'; says TMC won't take part in observance

on Wednesday criticised BJP-led government, slamming its decision to observe June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' (Constitution Murder Day), calling it a 'mockery' and 'hypocrisy of the highest order'.

chief said. announcing that the West Bengal government would not participate in the Centre's observance of the day.
'This is nothing but hypocrisy. Those who don't respect the Constitution are now talking about upholding its morality. It is a mockery," PTI quoted the TMC chief.
Last year, the Centre had announced that June 25, the day Emergency was imposed in 1975, would be officially marked as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas', commemorating what it describes as an attack on democracy during the Congress regime.
Banerjee, however, argued that the
BJP
was guilty of doing exactly what it claims to oppose.
'The manner in which BJP is trying to change and undermine Constitution, we can observe 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' everyday,' she said.
'Was toppling of democratically elected govts by BJP in Maharashtra and Bihar not attack on constitution,' she further added.
Banerjee also took a swipe at the central government's handling of the economy, pointing to the
demonetisation
exercise of 2016 as a turning point that hurt the country deeply.
'The manner in which they destroyed the country's economy in the name of demonetisation, November 8 should also be observed as 'Economy Destruction Day',' she said.
Taking a sharp dig at the Centre, she questioned, 'Who is the prime minister of the country, Narendra Modi or Amit Shah? It looks like Amit Shah is running the country.'
The further accused BJP of 'bulldozing democracy' by compromising key institutions such as the Election Commission and the media, and questioned the actual seat of power in the country.

Kolkata, June 18 (UNI) As the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the Central Government to resume the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme in West Bengal from August 1, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded that the BJP-led government release all pending dues that have been withheld for the past four years. 'The court has ordered that work must resume from August. But for four years, no work was done, no money was released. Our leaders staged protests in Delhi, and cases were filed against them. Central ministers didn't even meet them. We were humiliated in many ways,' the chief minister said in a press conference at Nabanna on Wednesday. 'We paid the workers from state funds. That money must be returned. The Centre must calculate the dues from the day the scheme was stopped and pay accordingly. Why was our share of the money given to other states? That is a crime,' she added. The central government which funds the scheme entirely had suspended MGNREGA funding to West Bengal in March 2022, citing large-scale misappropriation. West Bengal received Rs 7,507.80 crore under MGNREGA in the 2021–22 financial year. However, since then, no funds have been disbursed. The Centre had justified its actions by citing inconsistencies found in 31 out of 63 inspected worksites, according to RTI replies. 'Funds for the 100-day work scheme were not provided. People were made to work, but no payment was given. Who will pay them? We did—from the state government's own resources, through the 'Karmashree' scheme. And now they've come to celebrate 'Bangla Diwas'—those who have constantly insulted and deprived Bengal.' 'We will review this petition. You are sending teams to Bengal, but first, release the funds. It has been four years, and not a single rupee has been given. This is public money,' she said. The chief minister was referring to a four-member verification committee comprising representatives from the Central and State Governments, along with officials from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and the Accountant General. In April 2025, the committee reported that Rs 24 crore had been recovered from the districts under investigation. Additional Solicitor General Ashok Kumar Chakraborty, representing the Centre, said in the court that central investigation teams uncovered irregularities in districts like Hooghly, East Bardhaman, Malda, and Darjeeling, involving embezzlement of over Rs 50 crores. A broader audit revealed anomalies amounting to Rs 613 crores, of which Rs 2.1 crores had been recovered by the state as of 2024. However, the court observed that the grievances of genuine workers cannot be ignored on account of administrative or political concerns marking a major development in the long-standing deadlock over the rural employment programme. 'All the allegations are from before 2022. You are free to take any action regarding those. But the project must be started now,' Chief Justice Sivagnanam observed in response during the hearing. The court further clarified that MGNREGA, as legislated, does not allow for its indefinite suspension even in the face of corruption charges, and that any such action violates the spirit of the Act. The climber encountered severe difficulties during the expedition, prompting calls for immediate help. BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar took to X on Wednesday to inform that he had alerted External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar about the situation. 'I have alerted DrSJaishnakar and his team. I am also tagging Indian Embassy in Washington DC to please help. Stay Safe,' Chandrasekhar wrote. Pathanamthitta MP Anto Antony has also appealed to Jaishankar for swift intervention. In a letter, Antony highlighted Khan's perilous condition due to a severe storm and the urgent need for rescue. 'I request you to kindly give urgent direction to our mission in US to intervene in this matter and do all the possible assistance to help Khan,' Antony wrote. Khan's distress message reads: 'Hi this is Shaikh. I am on an expedition to Mount Denali, the highest peak of North America. We are stuck in a severe storm at 17,000 ft at camp 5. Less food and water to survive. I am here on a mission to hold a banner to congratulate our armed forces for Operation Sindoor. Only God can help us.' An employee of the Kerala government, Shaikh Hasan Khan has an impressive mountaineering record, including summiting Mount Everest in 2022, and several other peaks across continents. The Indian government and embassy officials are reportedly coordinating efforts to ensure the safe rescue of Khan and his team amid the harsh weather conditions on Denali.

Residents of Sheva Koliwada move Bombay HC over four-decade wait for rehabilitation
Residents of Sheva Koliwada in Uran taluka of Raigad district, Maharashtra, who have spent the past 40 years in a transit camp, have approached the Bombay High Court against multiple authorities — including the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Divisional Commissioner of Konkan Division, the Raigad District Collector, and CIDCO — alleging false assurances regarding rehabilitation. Filed under Articles 226 and 227 of the Constitution, the petition seeks judicial directions against JNPA for what the petitioners describe as a gross failure to fulfil statutory obligations under the Maharashtra Project Affected Persons Rehabilitation Act, 1976. The petitioners — the Maharashtra Small Scale Traditional Fish Workers Union, represented by its president Nandkumar W. Pawar and secretary Ramesh B. Koli — are seeking appropriate orders for permanent and adequate rehabilitation of 256 families displaced due to land acquisition for the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Project (JNPT). The petition urges time-bound implementation of a rehabilitation plan approved on January 24, which includes the allocation of 10.16 hectares of land, interim relief, compensation for prolonged displacement, and the appointment of a court-monitored committee to oversee the implementation process. A report titled '40 years in a transit camp' published in The Hindu on November 16, 2024, and a follow-up story on November 20, 2024, highlighted electoral boycotts by the affected community. Following the coverage, officials from the Election Commission of India and the Raigad District Collector visited the area, promising to convey residents' demands to higher authorities. On December 19, 2024, a senior Union government official gave a verbal assurance that permanent housing would soon be provided. However, on April 14, more than 400 residents protested outside the tehsildar's office, displaying a photograph of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and a copy of the Constitution, in a symbolic plea for justice. The protest was held to draw attention to the community's displacement and the delay in rehabilitation by the State and Central governments. The residents have also demanded immediate upgrades to existing transit camp facilities, including provision of safe drinking water, sanitation, drainage, reliable electricity, structural safety, and other essential services for the project-affected families. Mr. Ramesh Koli, 65, said, 'We have had several meetings with all kinds of government officials all these years, from CMs, to Guardian Ministers, to different Union ministers... We staged protests, filed RTIs, took the matter to Lokayukta, we have been made to run from pillar to post... governments changed in this State and country, but we have remained in the same transit camp, waiting for our independence, hoping some day we will get our lost homes, our village that the country took away from us in the name of development and forgot about the people behind the mega project.' He further stated that affected families were given assurances of employment and local business opportunities during the displacement process. 'But till date no one from affected fisherfolk families received any employment or any business to sustain their families,' he said. 'We are aboriginal, indigenous community of this region who have lost everything under the guise of development. Traditional fishing practices have dwindled due to fishing zones being allotted for various projects and heavy industrial pollution. We are left with no future for our young generation despite the fact that several coastal projects are running their business on our traditional fishing land. Is this democracy or dictatorship?' Mr. Koli added.
