India's next gen coal-fired power projects in limbo; Approvals pending over a year after Budget announcement

Time of India3 days ago
The 800 MW NTPC-BHEL advanced ultra super critical (AUSC) coal fired project is yet to get requisite approvals from the centre despite being announced in Budget 2024-25. According to submissions by the
Ministry of Heavy Industries
(MHI) before the
Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertakings
(CoPU), follow-up meetings were held at NITI Aayog in August and December 2024 subsequent to the budget announcement.
'A draft Public Investment Board (PIB) note for approval was also submitted to the Power Ministry by
NTPC
with project details in March 2025,' MHI said. But there has been no progress since.
'The final approval from the Government is still awaited which is crucial for the project to move forward,' the Parliamentary Committee said.
The AUSC project aims to replace aging subcritical coal plants with more efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives. The technology, developed jointly by
BHEL
, NTPC, and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), completed its R&D phase in December 2020.
According to MHI, the proposed Technology Demonstration Plant (TDP) is to be located at NTPC Korba in Chhattisgarh and implemented by NTPC BHEL Power Projects Private Limited (NBPPL).
Expressing concerns over the delay, The CoPU expressed concern over the delay, calling the ministry's response 'interim' and urging the Ministry of Heavy Industries to 'vigorously follow up' with the Ministry of Power and other relevant departments to secure final approval.
The committee emphasized the importance of the AUSC project in improving the efficiency and environmental performance of India's thermal power fleet, especially as over 130 GW of coal-based capacity is expected to cross 30 years of age by 2047.
The report also highlighted broader issues facing BHEL, including procurement restrictions, delays in board appointments, and gender representation in the workforce. The committee reiterated its call for time-bound action and greater
inter-ministerial coordination
to ensure strategic projects like AUSC do not languish despite policy support.

CM Chandrababu Naidu launches Stree Shakti free travel scheme

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu launched the Stree Shakti Scheme at Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) in Vijayawada on Friday, fulfilling another poll promise of free bus travel for women. Earlier, Naidu, along with Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan, HRD Minister Nara Lokesh, BJP State president PVN Madhav, and other leaders, travelled in an RTC bus with women from Undavalli village to Vijayawada city bus station, interacting with them along the way, and collecting feedback on government schemes and their impact on their lives. Addressing the women participating in the launching ceremony, Naidu expressed his happiness at fulfilling one of the TDP-led NDA government's flagship 'Super Six' promises on the occasion of Independence Day. He claimed that the scheme is aimed at boosting women's economic independence and dignity. 'This is my gift as an elder brother to every girl in the State. Now, every woman can travel anywhere in Andhra Pradesh without paying a single rupee. Whether it's for work, education, business, or visiting family, women can save their travel expenses,' he said. Naidu explained that 2.62 crore women in the State would benefit from zero-fare travel on 74% of the APSRTC fleet, covering various services regardless of distance. Zero fare tickets would be issued through POS machines for record purposes, and the RTC could claim 100% of the fare. The scheme would cost the government Rs 1,942 crore per annum. Naidu assured that measures were taken to avoid operational issues, including capacity expansion, better depot infrastructure, clean bus stations, GPS tracking for safety, and the introduction of 1,050 electric buses in 11 major cities under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme.

CM striving to put economy back on track: TDP State president Palla Srinivasa Rao

VIJAYAWADA: The 79th Independence Day celebrations were held on a grand note at the TDP headquarters in Mangalagiri on Friday. TDP State president Palla Srinivasa Rao hoisted the national flag, and extended his greetings to the people. Speaking on the occasion, Palla said the independence being enjoyed by us is because of the freedom fighters. He felt that there is a need to retrospect whether we achieved the desired goals or not after getting Independence. Recalling that former Chief Minister NT Rama Rao floated the TDP to uphold the self-respect of Telugus, he said the target of NTR was to lead the society in a proper way. While the British looted Rs 4 lakh crore, the act of a person (referring to YSRCP chief and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy) amassing Rs 2 lakh crore during his five-year tenure was nothing but an insult to the sacrifices of freedom fighters, he observed. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is working 16 to 18 hours a day to bring the State economy, which derailed during the previous YSRCP regime, back on track, and to safeguarding the values of democracy, he said.
