's state leadership on Monday over alleged derogatory remarks about women and the freezing of central funds. The criticism came at a press conference after leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari's comments about sindoor and bangles at a Sandeshkhali rally on Sunday.
"Yesterday, Adhikari spoke about Lakshmir Bhandar and said that women shouldn't sell their sindoor and bangles at Rs 500-1,000," said state minister Shashi Panja. "Lakshmir Bhandar is a universal scheme for each and every woman of Bengal, unlike the exclusionary schemes in BJP-governed states," she added and went on to say: "They (BJP) are in office in a lot of states. Why doesn't Adhikari ask those govts to extend benefits and give Rs 3,000 to every woman?"
The netas slammed other BJP seniors' misogynist comments, including remarks of Union minister Sukanta Majumdar and former state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh about CM Mamata Banerjee.
On central funds, MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said: "Over Rs 1.75 lakh crore of Bengal's funds have been wilfully blocked by Centre."
Netas also spoke of BJP's "manipulation" in the Sandeshkhali incident. "They cheated the women of Sandeshkhali by making them sign on blank papers, using those later to file fake complaints," Panja claimed. tnn

‘Tiranga Yatra' fills Chandni Chowk with patriotic fervour

The historic lanes of Chandni Chowk were awash with patriotic colours on Monday, ahead of Independence Day. The Virat Tiranga Yatra, led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Praveen Khandelwal, brought together traders, residents, and BJP workers in a vibrant celebration. BJP leaders and workers during a 'Tiranga Yatra' at Chandni Chowk in New Delhi on Monday. (PTI) Starting from Red Fort's ramparts, and culminating at Fatehpuri, the celebration drew participation from women, youth, workers, and the local trading community and turned the bustling market area into a sea of tricolours. Shopfronts, rooftops, and street corners along the route were decorated with the national flag and the yatra was accompanied by bands, drums, shehnais, and trumpets. Local market associations and RWAs lined the route, showering flowers on the participants. Slogans such as 'Har Gali – Har Mohalla, Har Dil Mein Tiranga Laharaye' and 'Tiranga Aan Bharat Ki – Tiranga Shaan Bharat Ki' echoed throughout, underscoring the unity and pride of the gathering. Khandelwal described the yatra as 'a reflection of deep respect and unwavering commitment to our national flag.' He linked the event to the 'Bharatiya Samaan – Hamara Swabhiman' campaign under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it a decisive step towards promoting indigenous products and self-reliance. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi is recognised globally not only for his bold decisions but also for implementing them effectively. Today, the world acknowledges India's growing power, leadership, and capabilities,' Khandelwal said. He added that traders nationwide are joining the campaign, playing a key role in strengthening the economy and reviving India's manufacturing prowess. The initiative, he stressed, represents not just economic progress but also 'the resurgence of India's glory, pride, and self-reliance.'

SP members stage walkout from Parishad over schools' pairing

1 2 Lucknow: Govt's decision to pair primary schools with low attendance led to fireworks in the Vidhan Parishad on Monday, with the Samajwadi Party accusing the BJP of violating the principle of the Right to Education. The party staged a walkout in the middle of basic education minister Sandeep Singh's response to the discussion, alleging that the BJP was turning the education sector into a business. SP's Ashutosh Sinha said, according to data provided to the Lok Sabha recently, between 2017-18 and 2023-24, about 26,040 govt schools in UP were either closed or paired. Against a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:20, there were 8,866 primary schools having only a single teacher in each, and these schools had 611,950 registered children. Calling this a conspiracy by the govt to avoid new recruitments, Sinha said that the chief secretary admitted to the Supreme Court that 308,316 posts of teachers in upper primary schools were vacant. Leader of Opposition in Parishad Lal Bihari Yadav alleged that differences between private and council schools resulted in low enrolment in govt schools. "Admission to private schools starts at 3 years while at govt schools it is 5 years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Stylish New Mobility Scooters Available for Seniors (Prices May Surprise You) Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Search Now Undo It should not matter if there are 50 or 5 children in a school. The govt should strive to ensure the best education for all children. Books are not available, and a change in school timings has ensured that at 1.30 pm, when schools give over, children have to walk back in the heat," he said. In response, Singh said the pairing of schools would not impact any child. "The pairing is being done to improve group and peer learning and learning outcomes among children. When children sit together and learn, it encourages discussion among them, and learning is better," he said. He stated that if children find it difficult to reach schools after the merger, the schools will not be paired. The minister added that pairing schools will also increase the availability of teachers. He explained that schools with higher enrolment get more composite grants and therefore have better facilities. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Land pooling policy scrapped, land owners have the last laugh

1 2 Amritsar: Jagdeep Singh, a farmer from Nijjapura — home to some of the most valuable land on the outskirts of Amritsar — could hardly contain his emotions upon hearing that the govt scrapped the land pooling policy. Overcome with joy, he broke into a smile, his eyes glistening with tears. A newfound energy filled his stride, as if a heavy burden suddenly lifted. Expressing gratitude for givng him the news, he couldn't hold back his words and kept repeating, "Bhai sahib, thank you! Tusi badi changi khabar ditti hai. Asi taan jaan di baazi lagan nu tayyar baithhe si—sirf apni zameen bachan layi." (Brother, thank you! You've given us such good news. We were ready to risk our lives—just to save our land.) Jagdeep said he owned four to five acres of land while all of his family members own around 70 to 80 acres of land in Nijjarpura, where prime land costs more than Rs 3 crore per acre. He said so many institutes, hotels, etc., have come up in the area, which would have made the land even more costly in the near future. "We could never allow the govt to take away our land and were ready for anything," he said. Similar emotions were echoed by Dheer Singh, a retired principal, whose 10 to 12 acres of land in Rakh Cheetha and Jandiala fell under the ambit of the land pooling policy. Brimming with happiness, he called the move a major win for farmers and the opposition. "This is a victory of the people, the govt didn't withdraw the policy on its own, it was forced to, under pressure," he said. Rattan Singh Randhawa, a farmer leader representing the Border Area Sangharsh Committee, warned that if the govt had not withdrawn the policy now, it would have faced more resistance on the scale of the 2021 farmers' agitation that forced the repeal of the three central farm laws. "We were preparing for a massive protest, but this news has come as a huge relief for us and for the farming community," he said, adding that over 4,500 acres of land were affected by the land pooling policy, which he called deeply unjust to farmers.
