Police identify suspect in upside-down flag incident in PD school
District police chief Superintendent Maslan Udin said the man would be called in to assist with the investigation, adding that the flag was taken down on the same day.
"The investigation is ongoing and will be referred to the public prosecutor for further action," he said in a statement today.
He said a report on the matter was lodged by a 32-year-old man yesterday, and the case is being investigated under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Maslan advised the public not to circulate the issue further as it could disrupt harmony and public order.

GEORGE TOWN: Police are finalising investigation papers on the case of five Iranian nationals who were arrested for investigation into the alleged theft of money from foreign tourists around the George Town city centre last Saturday. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said all five, aged between 19 and 35, have finished their police remand and are currently being remanded by the Immigration Department until Aug 15. Mohd Alwi said his party was investigating the cases under Section 379 of the Penal Code (for theft) and Section 380 the same act in addition to Section 6 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Last Saturday, police arrested the three men and two women at Plaza Gurney during Op Tourist to assist in the investigation into the theft of money from foreign tourists who were believed to have been swindled through trickery around the city centre, where the suspects are believed to possess expertise to swindle with sweet-talking skills to carry out the crime such as casting victims under a spell or a charm (pukau) before stealing their money. Police received three reports of cash theft involving tourists in a hypnosis scam (pukau) that occurred in the Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang areas involving victims who were Taiwanese, Dutch and Syrian nationals, all aged between 29 and 52, in incidents from July 30 to Aug 1.

Police Corporal Killed After Being Rammed By SUV Driven By Fleeing Robbers
ALOR SETAR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- A police corporal was killed after he was rammed by a sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by robbers who were fleeing midway of robbing a house at Taman Golf, near here, today. Kedah police chief CP Adzli Abu Shah said Corporal Mohd Hafizul Izham Mazlan, 35, died at the scene after he was struck by a Lexus SUV with four suspects on board. 'At 3.30 pm today, police received a tip-off regarding a suspected house burglary. A team of five officers and personnel from the Kedah police contingent's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was dispatched to the location in two vehicles. 'Upon arrival, the victim, who had just stepped out of the car, was rammed by the suspects who were attempting to flee. He sustained severe head and body injuries and died at the scene,' he told reporters when met at the location today. A suspect was arrested at the scene, while three others fled in the same vehicle but were later apprehended in Kepala Batas, near here after they hijacked an elderly couple's vehicle at a hotel. 'They forcibly removed the male driver and took off with his wife, who was seated in the front passenger seat. 'The vehicle was later involved in an accident in Kepala Batas, where police successfully apprehended all remaining suspects in the surrounding area,' he said, adding that the suspects, aged 24 to 26, will be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, and Section 457 of the same Code for housebreaking. The suspected ringleader, 26, has 77 prior criminal records, involving burglary, car theft, and drug offences, while the other three suspects, believed to be from the southern region, also have prior criminal records. 'We will apply for a remand order tomorrow and continue our investigations,' he said.

Three charged with smuggling Sri Lankan national via KLIA
KLANG: Three individuals, including a woman, appeared in the Sessions Court today over charges of smuggling a Sri Lankan national. The accused are G. Santhiya Darshini, 27, and Janarthanan Appupillai, 46, both Malaysians, along with Vtheewaran Palani, 48, a Sri Lankan citizen. They acknowledged the charge after it was read to them in Tamil before Judge Mohd Sabri Ismail. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the High Court's jurisdiction. The trio allegedly arranged the smuggling of a Sri Lankan migrant via KLIA Terminal 1 on July 10. They were charged under Section 26C of the ATIPSOM Act 2007, read with Section 34 of the Penal Code. If convicted, they face up to 15 years' imprisonment, a fine, or both. In a separate case, Sri Lankan national Antany Sujan Antany Ranjan, 21, was charged with possessing a fake passport. The offence allegedly occurred at KLIA's international departure gate on July 10 at 10.25 pm. No plea was recorded as this case also falls under the High Court's jurisdiction. He was charged under Section 26E of the ATIPSOM Act, carrying a sentence of seven to 15 years and a fine of up to RM500,000. Deputy public prosecutors Anisah Pisol and Norhidayah Abdullah Sani opposed bail for all accused. They requested the cases be transferred to the Shah Alam High Court. The court approved the prosecution's application for the transfer. The first three accused were represented by lawyers William Edwin, Donald Selvam, and C. Surenthran.
