Political slugfest erupts over renaming of Kolkata's iconic Sealdah station
Kolkata: A fresh political tussle has broken out between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the proposed renaming of Kolkata's iconic Sealdah Railway Station. While the Trinamool Congress wants the Sealdah station to be renamed after Swami Vivekananda, the West Bengal unit of the BJP wants it to be renamed after Syama Prasad Mukherjee. Both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress have their own logic. According to BJP former state president in West Bengal and Union Minister of State, Dr Sukanta Majumdar, Sealdah station was denied the main transit point status for the Hindu refugees during the partition of undivided India. 'The man responsible for ensuring the proper livelihood of these Hindu refugees was Syama Prasad Mukherjee. So, in his memory as well as keeping in mind the significance of Sealdah station for the transit of refugees, the station should be named after him,' Majumdar said. However, Trinamool Congress state general secretary, Kunal Ghosh, has rejected Majumdar's logic. According to him, there is a port in West Bengal that is already named after Syama Prasad Mukherjee. There is no necessity for a station to be named after him. 'Rather, Sealdah has a direct link with Swami Vivekananda. After delivering his iconic speech at a religious conference in Chicago in the USA, he came to Sealdah station. So there is a direct link between him and the station. So the station should be named after him," Ghosh said. However, Majumdar admitted that naming Sealdah station after Syama Prasad Mukhopadhyay would not be easy, as the name change of any railway station in any state required the concurrence of the state government concerned. 'The station's name will be changed following the recommendation of the state government concerned. So I will request the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, that her government sends the proposal for renaming the station after Syama Prasad Mukherjee,' Majumdar said.

BJP Govt, Election Commission Completely Lost Plot: Karnataka CM On Detention Of INDIA Bloc MPs During Protest
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday accused the BJP-led Central government of "weaponising" police against the INDIA bloc MPs instead of "addressing rot" in the electoral system, as "exposed" by Rahul Gandhi. He made the remarks after the Delhi Police today detained INDIA bloc MPs, for protesting against the poll body over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar and allegation of "voter fraud" during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. "The cowardly Narendra Modi Govt and a compromised Election Commission have completely lost the plot. After Shri Rahul Gandhi exposed massive voter fraud in Bengaluru, instead of addressing the rot in our electoral system, the BJP is weaponising the police to detain those demanding accountability," Siddaramaiah wrote in a post on X. Rahul Gandhi on August 7 held a press conference, where he claimed that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were "choreographed" by the EC to benefit the BJP, which he said appeared "immune to anti-incumbency." Today, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other senior INDIA leaders were detained for marching peacefully to the ECI against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar and the growing pattern of electoral malpractices," Siddaramaiah said. Continuing his tirade over the government's actions, Siddaramaiah said, "A government that silences the Opposition rather than letting the ECI do its constitutional duty is a government that fears the truth - and fears the people." Earlier today, Delhi Police detained Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mallikarjun Kharge and other Opposition MPs, shortly after they began their protest march from the Makar Dwar of the Parliament. The MPs were raising slogans of "vote chor" as they marched towards the office of the poll body at Nirvachan Sadan, before being halted by the Police. The detained MPs were taken in a bus to the olice station. Rahul Gandhi said that the Opposition's fight is not a political fight but a fight to save the constitution. "The reality is that they cannot talk. The truth is in front of the country. This fight is not political. This fight is to save the Constitution. This fight is for One Man, One Vote. We want a clean, pure voters list," the Congress leader said. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi said, "Dare hue hai. Sarkaar kaayar hai. (They are afraid, the Government is a coward)," BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accused the Congress of misleading the public. "The country can see if there is anyone who is working against the Constitution, it is led by Rahul Gandhi. SIR is not happening for the first time in the country. Congress lies about EVMs, raises the issue of Maharashtra elections, Haryana elections and creates a mountain of is their well-thought-out strategy to create a state of anarchy...I appeal to the Opposition and the Congress party to raise all issues in discussion on Operation Sindoor in Parliament, the Opposition and Congress had no agenda..."

‘One of them is…': BJP's Malviya weighs in on KC Venugopal-vs-Air India over ‘close to tragedy' flight scare
A senior BJP leader on Monday referred to Air India's denial of Congress MP KC Venugopal's claim of a narrow escape from tragedy during a flight, and demanded that he face consequences if his allegation proves false. KC Venugopal had said an Air India flight carrying MPs from Kerala to Delhi just about avoided a tragedy at the Chennai airport upon diversion there.(ANI) Venugopal had said an Air India flight carrying MPs, including himself, just about avoided a tragedy at the Chennai airport when another aircraft was on the runway. Air India later rejected his interpretation of the events, to which Venugopal said, 'Air India is lying. It was announced by captain only.' BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya shared Venugopal's original post, detailing the experience onboard, and Air India's response, and wrote, 'One of them is misrepresenting facts.' He added, "If the allegation is true, Chennai ATC and Air India have much to answer for. If not, Mr Venugopal should face consequences, including being put on a no-fly list for spreading falsehoods." KC Venugopal said there was 'heart-stopping moment' KC Venugopal posted on X shortly after 12 am on Monday describing a 'heart-stopping moment' during the first landing attempt at Chennai, when 'another aircraft was reportedly on the same runway". He was among several MPs and other passengers on the flight AI 2455 from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi. He said, 'What began as a delayed departure turned into a harrowing journey. Shortly after take-off, we were hit by unprecedented turbulence. About an hour later, the captain announced a flight signal fault and diverted to Chennai… 'For nearly two hours, we circled the airport awaiting clearance to land, until a heart-stopping moment during our first attempt — another aircraft was reportedly on the same runway. In that split second, the captain's quick decision to pull up saved every life on board. The flight landed safely on the second attempt.' Venugopal stressed that passenger safety should not rely on luck and called on the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Civil Aviation Ministry to urgently investigate, assign accountability, and prevent such incidents in future. Notably, as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Venugopal had recently overseen discussions on aviation safety following the Ahmedabad Air India crash. On Sunday, Air India responded that flight AI2455 was diverted to Chennai due to a suspected technical issue, not because another aircraft was on the runway. The aviation regulator DGCA confirmed the flight's diversion was caused by suspected weather radar malfunction, with the plane landing safely. In a statement, Air India said, 'We would like to clarify that the diversion to Chennai was precautionary due to a suspected technical issue and poor weather conditions.' 'A go-around was instructed by Chennai ATC during the first attempted landing at Chennai airport, not because of the presence of another aircraft on the runway... Our pilots are well-trained to handle such situations, and in this case, they followed standard procedures throughout the flight,' the airline added. 'We understand that such an experience can be unsettling and regret the inconvenience the diversion may have caused to you. However, safety is always our priority.'
