Rahul Gandhi Claims Arun Jaitley Threatened Him. His Son Replies
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi drew a sharp counter from late BJP leader Arun Jaitley's son this morning, after the Congress MP claimed that the government had sent the former Union minister to threaten him over the Opposition's pushback against the farm laws.
The farm laws - comprising three separate legislations that would have deregulated the government-run wholesale markets - were introduced in 2020 but withdrawn after over a year due to massive protests by farmers. This was after Arun Jaitley died, pointed out his son, Rohan Jaitley.
The BJP, too, snubbed Mr Gandhi's claims as "fake news".
Speaking at the Annual Legal Conclave 2025, Mr Gandhi, who now leads the Congress charge in Lok Sabha, claimed that Arun Jaitley had threatened him with action if he carried on the protest against the three farm laws.

"I remember when I was fighting the farm laws, Arun Jaitley was sent to me to threaten me. He said, 'If you carry on opposing the government, fighting the farm laws, we will have to act against you.' I looked at him and said 'I don't think you have an idea who you are talking to,'" Rahul Gandhi said.
Rohan Jaitley countered him with a timeline of his father's death and the farm laws controversy. In a long online post, Mr Jaitley, president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association, said it was not his father's nature to threaten the opposition; rather, he preferred open discussions.
"Rahul Gandhi now claims my late father, Arun Jaitley, threatened him over the farm laws. Let me remind him, my father passed away in 2019. The farm laws were introduced in 2020. More importantly, it was not in my father's nature to threaten anyone over an opposing view. He was a staunch democrat and always believed in building consensus. If at all such a situation were to occur, as it often does in politics, he would invite free and open discussions to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution for all. That was simply who he was, and that remains his legacy today," said Mr Jaitley.
He also urged Mr Gandhi to be mindful while speaking of those who have departed.
"He attempted something similar with Manohar Parrikar ji, politicising his final days which was in equally poor taste. Let the departed Rest in Peace," he added, referring to Mr Gandhi's claims about the former defence minister over the Rafale deal.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya also slammed Mr Gandhi. To suggest that Arun Jaitley approached him (Mr Gandhi) for anything at all is factually incorrect and misleading, he said, and asked the Congress leader to stick to facts and rewrite timelines.

Let's set the record straight: Arun Jaitley ji passed away on 24 August 2019. The draft Farm Bills were brought to the Union Cabinet on 3 June 2020. Transport unions are in contempt: Karnataka HC on bus strike despite restraining orders
Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court said the transport unions are in contempt by going ahead with the strike on Tuesday despite the restraining orders. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and CM Joshi orally observed this and extended till Thursday the interim order restraining the Transport Corporation Employees to put on hold their proposed strike.'You (office bearers of unions) are in contempt. We will have to issue contempt. Has the strike been suspended? There's an order passed under the Essential Services Management Act (ESMA). The strike is illegal and you can be arrested as a consequence. You cannot hold the public to ransom. The court also ordered notice to other unions representing transport PIL stated that the proposed indefinite strike violates the right to mobility guaranteed under Article 21 of the constitution. The petitioner placed the August 1, 2025 circular issued by the KSRTC that prohibited the employees from participating in any strike by citing ESMA and Industrial Disputes Act. The circular also invoked the 'No work No pay' principle and warned the employees of disciplinary action.

Derogatory remarks against Amit Shah: Rahul Gandhi to appear before Jharkhand court on August 6
RANCHI: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, will appear before the MP-MLA Special Court in Chaibasa on Wednesday, in a defamation case registered against him for an alleged objectionable remark against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2018. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in Ranchi on Monday to attend the last rites of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren. After paying his respects in Soren's native village, Nemra, Gandhi returned to Ranchi and will proceed to Chaibasa on Tuesday to appear before the MP-MLA Court as directed by the Jharkhand High Court on June 10. The High Court had earlier dismissed Gandhi's plea challenging a non-bailable warrant issued by the Chaibasa court, which had ordered his personal appearance by June 26. Gandhi's counsel had sought an exemption under Section 205 of the CrPC, but the court rejected the request, insisting on his physical presence. Following this, Gandhi approached the High Court, where his lawyer argued that scheduling conflicts prevented an earlier appearance. After consultations, August 6 was agreed upon as a suitable date for the hearing. The legal trouble stems from a 2018 speech during an AICC plenary session in New Delhi, where Gandhi allegedly referred to BJP leaders as "murderers" and "liars." He had stated, 'The people of this country will never accept a lying BJP leadership drunk with power… They will accept a man accused of murder as BJP President, but the same won't be tolerated in Congress.' A BJP worker, Pratap Kumar, filed a complaint in Chaibasa's Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in July 2018, prompting the court to take cognizance in February 2022. Summons were issued to Gandhi, followed by a bailable warrant after he failed to appear. With his continued absence, a non-bailable warrant was eventually issued in May 2025. The case highlights the ongoing political tensions as Gandhi faces judicial proceedings over his remarks.
