Coca-Cola Europacific Partners tempers annual revenue forecast on Indonesia weakness

Reuters5 days ago
Aug 6 (Reuters) - Coca-Cola Europacific Partners tempered its annual revenue forecast on Wednesday, citing softer demand in Indonesia due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a challenging macroeconomic environment.
The bottler, which operates across Western Europe, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, said Southeast Asia volumes were hit by brand boycotts in Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country, in response to the conflict in Gaza.
Coca-Cola Europacific Partners expects annual comparable revenue to be between 3% and 4%, compared with a prior forecast of about a 4% rise.

Iran will limit nuclear programme if Trump eases sanctions

Iran has conceded it will limit its nuclear programme and reduce uranium enrichment levels if the United States lifts sanctions. Majid Takht-Ravanchi, the deputy foreign minister, said the Islamic Republic would slow down its nuclear programme in exchange for economic relief from Donald Trump. But he ruled out completely halting enrichment and did not specify how much of a reduction Iran would make. Mr Takht-Ravanchi said: 'Iran can be flexible on the capacities and limits of enrichment, but cannot agree to stop enrichment under any circumstance because it's essential, and we need to rely on ourselves, not on empty promises.' Complete cessation of uranium enrichment was 'out of the question', the official said. Despite escalating tensions, the deputy foreign minister said diplomatic channels with the US remained open through intermediaries. He said Iran was 'ready for dialogue with the United States', but warned that new American threats 'would be met with firm defence'. Iran enriches uranium up to 60 per cent purity, close to the roughly 90 per cent needed for nuclear weapons.

Kuwait Airways faces difficulties from delivery delays, regional instability, chairman says

Kuwait, Aug 11 (Reuters) - State-owned Kuwait Airways is facing difficulties in achieving its strategic targets, including breaking even and increasing passenger numbers, due to delayed aircraft deliveries and geopolitical pressure in the region, the carrier's chairman said on Monday. Aircraft manufacturers have struggled with supply chain log jams stemming from shortages of parts and labour since the pandemic, delaying airlines' expansion and upgrade plans by years. Kuwait Airways is waiting for nine aircraft from France's Airbus ( opens new tab. The airline has 27 jets now, expected to reach 30 by year-end, with the rest due in 2027, Abdulmohsen Alfagaan told Reuters. Its plans had been based on having 33 aircraft in 2024, whereas at one point it had just 23, having also had to return leased planes. That, Alfagaan said, would affect the company's plan to grow passenger numbers to 5.5 million in 2025 from more than 4 million last year. He did not disclose 2024's profit during a press conference following the airline's annual general meeting on Monday. Alfagaan said political challenges disrupting the region's aviation industry and other issues related to some countries it serves, would also delay the carrier's 2025 break-even target.

Farmers displaced by $1.5bn Trump golf course reportedly being offered rice and cash

Villagers whose farms in Vietnam will be bulldozed to make way for a $1.5bn golf resort backed by the Trump family have reportedly been offered rice provisions and cash compensation of as little as $12 for a square metre of land by state authorities. Thousands of villagers will be offered compensation based on land size and location, according to a report by Reuters. The agency spoke to elderly farmers who said they feared they would struggle to find a stable livelihood. The sprawling golf resort, the first project by the Trump Organization in Vietnam, broke ground as the country scrambled to reach a crucial trade deal with the US. Vietnam, which is heavily dependent on exports, was facing the threat of a 46% tariff in April, which has since been reduced to 20% for many goods. Vietnam's prime minister said the project played an important role in deepening the country's relationship with the US and that villagers would be reimbursed. Pham Minh Chinh added that he hoped the development would create jobs and improve livelihoods. The project will include a 54-hole VIP golf course, luxury resorts, high-end villas and a modern urban complex, according to state media. Reactions among local people have been mixed, with many farmers suggesting the compensation rates are too low. The New York Times reported in May that the development had been approved unusually fast and was allowed to break ground even though at least half a dozen legally required steps, including environmental reviews, had not been conducted. The White House has denied suggestions of a conflict of interest, saying the business deals of the Trump Organization are entirely separate from trade negotiations and that Donald Trump's assets are in a trust managed by his children. However, disclosures in June showed income from those sources ultimately accrues to the president. The best public interest journalism relies on first-hand accounts from people in the know. The golf course development in Hung Yen province, south of Hanoi, is a joint venture between the Trump Organization and the Vietnamese real estate company Kinh Bac City. Trump's family business is not involved in granting compensation to farmers, according to Reuters. Five farmers facing a loss of land told Reuters they had been informed reimbursements would be offered of between $12 and $30 for every square metre of farmland, with additional payments for uprooted plants and rice supplies offered for several months. A local official told the news agency that rates for farmland in the area had usually not exceeded $14 a square metre. All land is managed by the state in Vietnam, a communist country, with farmers given small plots for long-term use, which can be taken back by the authorities.
